I’ve been watching a few of your videos today and want to say thank you, I’ve found them quite informative. I’m new to the drone community, I work for a surveying and mapping company and recently got my part 107. For the company, I’ve had the opportunity to fly a Phantom 4, a Matrice 210 and a WingtraONE gen 2. Our main application for the drone work is basic topography, but you’ve given me some insight to opportunities we’re missing out on as far as what we could be using it for on some of our construction sites. My next step though is hoping to create a side business with drones. I’m still trying to narrow down on a niche. Real estate has been my first thought, but doesn’t hold a lot of interest for me. What you’re doing in commercial real estate seems to resonate with me and my more long term goals(I have a background in heavy equipment/land development and intend to build a business in that scope in the further out future). I’m taking a beginners CAD course in the fall, and I have access to some of the processing software you’ve mentioned(pix4d in particular). Is there any courses or training you would suggest to help me get more focused and trained in that particular niche before diving in and trying to bankroll a side business of my own?

Great vid. I notice some hesitation at times from some people in the industry with regard to discussing "how much". It's like they are trying to not divulge some company secret but it leaves new pilots hanging, setting them up for ridicule. I tell new pilots the same thing about residential real estate, and I still use that as a buffer for down time and keep my flight log populated. Cheers!

I’ve been flying for years and my first real drone was the DJI spark but I hardly fly it and I just got a mini 2 because I know it will sit after I mess with it a little bit but now that I just found out you can get a license and get paid for it I might be able to fly more. Now with my previous employer I tried to reclass to a UAV operator but it was always full but imagine if I did I could work for the government with a starting salary of 115k - 175k a year but that’s to fly a reaper or shadow though not a dji drone. Imagine flying a drone that costs 32 million and that’s not covering armament.

Dylan, thanks for this information, it is very helpful. I've been bootstrapping my drone business while working my F/T job, which I also love. So, I know the value added by grinding out the work as well as the challenge of working around my F/T job. I 100% agree with the huge problem of the race toward the bottom most often fed by the Christmas droners (got a drone for Christmas, passed the Part107, got no experience, but legal to work). I'll probably get some flack so I'll acknowledge that everyone has to start somewhere. Anyways, I'm looking to niche my offerings, and I've started by enhancing my professional training, certifications, etc. There are a ton of free certifications commercial drone pilots should consider, including FEMA. Thanks again for your message!

@DylanGorman2 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for checking out the video! For drone mapping, I would suggest the P4Pro v2 or the Mavic 2 Pro. I know these are hard to come by nowadays but when it comes to mapping it's the best entry-level drone that you can get. I still don't know when Drone Deploy will support the Mavic 3 drones, it is more of a DJI thing as they have not yet released the SDK for anyone to make 3rd party apps for it! If you still have the Mini 2, I would check out Litchi, they make a $25 app that works for doing basic mapping with the Mini 2! I hope that answers some questions!

This answers many questions I had. One thing I saw with some training courses I did was that they say everything drones can do and make it sound so easy, yet they don't talk about having to know about mapping, thermography, etc. Many talk about how drones are great for x y and z, but make no mention of extra training courses and the like. Especially if you want to be competitive. I recently took a nose dive into the drone industry, got my Part 107, did an in person week long training where they talked about several niches, but I still feel like I'm way behind the curb. I want to do asset inspection mostly. I looked into the Skydio, mostly because I'd like to get govt contracts in the future.

Another good video Dylan. The first video of yours that I watched was the about using the Mini 2 with Maps Made Easy to create orthos, etc. I recently tested it out and it gives you all of the files, but what is the cheapest to view those files? The renderings that it provides through Map Pilot Pro even says "low resolution" so I was curious how to create a deliverable that others can view in high resolution? I downloaded and used Agisoft Metashape and it worked pretty well, but I'm still not sure how someone else would view that without having the software. Also, Drone Deploy is not $300+ per month. If you just want to do a job here and there to get your feet wet, can you use something like Maps Made Easy to obtain similar results? Just curious if there are other budget friendly options for people just getting started, or is Drone Deploy providing something that MME does not? Thanks!

Just an FYI commercial "DRONE" pilot would be a better phraseology, anyone working in the aviation industry should be using the right terms. Not trying to be rude, but those of us with a Commercial "Pilots" License has worked very hard for that and just passing the part 107 doesn't make you a commercial "Pilot" just drones. again just trying to "Educate" you.

If everyone keeps undercutting by 15% then the price still keeps dropping as a new low to undercut another 15% appears. This trend of undercutting has gone on for ages in all kinds of industry and the ultimate problem is it ruins the ability to live decently for many people. Even the people undercutting eventually may have to keep dropping prices as more people undercut even their lowest price. Eventually, too many people are not living very well. If only people could realize the full scope of so many things they do that ends up making it bad for everyone....including themselves. But so many things fall into this trend of gradually declining our societies. People don't realize the long-term effects or think about them and they just see what is in front of them and what they can get in a red-hot minute. They don't realize they are hurting themselves too.

This has always been a sticky problem with the the clients that I work for. What to charge and what products work best for the clients needs. Recently I have been looking into the 3D mapping world but I have been hesitant because of the $$. I know it has been cheaper than ever to get into this and I have been approached by a couple of business to provide the service. I currently have been flying drones commercially for 6 years but mainly just real estate. My go to is my Mavic 2 pro ( yes I know its bottom of the barrel) but its a very capable drone for I currently do. However I know it will not cut it for 3D mapping not even close. So my question is what would you recommend for the next level of drone? That will provide good data points for doing 3D mapping? But still not breaking the bank for a small operation. Thank you in Advance!

I'm a young drone pilot looking to get my part 107 cert, your video helped me understand more about what I should look out for once I am able to start taking jobs.

Thanks Dylan for sharing your wealth of experience. As I transition into the professional side of the Drone industry, your information is very helpful for me to choose which path to take. Thanks again for all you do for the drone community and I look forward to more of your videos.

Thanks Dylan for sharing your wealth of experience. I appreciate you sharing the professional side of the Drone industry, it began as a hobby interest and then I soon saw the various niche markets I could offer services part-time. I'll be joining your mastery course soon. Thank you

Got my Mavic 3 Pro on order, and upgrading my services from terrestrial to aerial. This vid may well have been outside of my scope, not only in region but also in specialisation, training and extra (rather costly) bits that I don't really need, but it's good to get some kind of idea as to what people charge for drone 'deliverables' services. I had the privilege of flying an AGRAS T10 and a Matrice 600 during my training stint, and I got a really good feel of how these are to fly (and the considerable cost behind them). They're slugs next to the old Phantom 4 Pro I learnt on.

Awesome video! You know, it's funny you mentioned offering a free demo to the potential client. I asked about doing that in the Real Estate Photography community as a way to get started in the industry and get your first client. They were all like Do Not Do That! I thought though, it was a solid point of departure to not only build a relationship but your portfolio.

$150 for a real estate jobs…. Start car drive back and fort for an hour, fly for one hour, and spend at least an hour processing images…… not worth it.

Just being honest, not going to tell someone they can make $100k off of regular real estate. Don’t want to look like an ass you know

@@DylanGorman Thank you for that, that’s why I would not bother doing this.

Well there isn’t much of an industry as just a real estate drone operator. Most realtors use a one stop company with photos, video, drone, floor plan and 3d tours.

Hey Dylan, thank u for all the information. I have watched all of your videos but I am still not sure how I can start for example at drone deploy. Do I need to do an application or something similar? Or have I just to signed up on the website and can see assignments in my area? How do I know it would be profitable in my region? A step by step tutorial would be nice! Thank you!

I’m working on a full course for drone photogrammetry that’ll come out next month! But I see where you may be stuck. Drone deploy has some guides on their site that I’m sure can be helpful!

If I bought a dji maverick air2S to for doing 3D mapping in photogrammetry what’s the guideline and prices to charge for that?
@DylanGorman2 жыл бұрын
Whats your experience level, what industry would you be going after, what software would you be using to process it in, how big of a scan are you doing? All of these come into factor when determining a price. For simple scans I would charge between $75-$275 depending on what the final deliverable is!

@@DylanGorman I’m in Architectural Engineering and I’m new to the drone industry however it would definitely help me moving forward and add value to my work. I’m just thinking of getting in it at this point and working my way up as I advance and get better. Pixel 4D as far as software and for square footage anywhere from 5000 ft.² ~ 25,000 ft.².

Is this for full 3d models or just top down view for planametrics? (I most likely spelled that wrong but you understand what I’m trying to say!)
