That's basically the same as not dying in a series. It's a really big writing mistake, because viewers stop feeling worried for the characters when we realize the writers don't have the guts to compromise to a decision and handle the consequences. It's just like supernatural, you just don't care when they die anymore because you know the writers are cowards so they're just gonna bring them back to life at some point.

I've watched the entire series probably 7 times now and I still pick up on things I missed because there is so much going on in every single one of the 171 episodes. There's no way you can know what went on by watching Pilot and Finale. There were so many interesting characters like the Mikaelsons, Katherine and Alaric. There were so many action sequences, so many twists and turns and relationship changes that you really need to pay attention. The true relationship story of the whole series was the one between Damon and Stefan. You have to watch it all to appreciate how that first 'Hello, brother' and the final 'Hello, brother' are so different.
