"The scaffold was high and eternity was near". The Band switches from their main instruments and do a splendid version of Long Black Veil. This is from the concert video "The Band is Back", in Vancouver 1983.

Garth Hudson is a multi-instrumentalist who can play Piano, Organ, Accordion and Saxophone. It’s interesting because most or all of them could play multiple instruments but it says Garth is the only multi-instrumentalist if you search them up.

I just can't get enough of watching and listening to Rick Danko singing, especially this song, also Stage Freight, and my favorite "It makes no difference". I have like The Band since 1969, always liked Robbie, but recently have really singled out Rick, he is so soulful.

Yes, especially when he sings "It makes no difference" and "Stage Freight", and of course "I shall be released" from Richard Manuels memorial. I don't know if you are male or female, I'm female, a few years younger than the guys in The Band, I always thought Robbie was very good looking when younger, still do. @@TheDailyDucks681 Richard, Levon and Rick all had great voices. When they were in The Band, Robbie Robertson often wrote a song with a particular singer in mind. Levon was great on Up on Cripple Creek and Dixie, and also the beginning of The Weight, and Rick was perfect for the Chester verse. RIchards voice was made for "The Shape I'm in",

All the members of The Band were multi-instrumentalists, three had phenomenal voices (ie. Levon, Rick and Richard) and how many bands that had five such talented guys in them could stay together so long and leave such a lasting legacy? I'd nominate The Band as the very best band ever, from their varied work they left us to their influence on so very many other top, popular superstar musicians and to 'nick a catch phrase.from Pacino "I've been around, ya' know".

Long Black Veil sounds like a very old and very traditional song of the Appalachians But the truth is that it was written in 1959 which means that it was only 24 years old when The Band did this great performance of it
@jeremiah123z
@jeremiah123z 8 жыл бұрын
I thought so too, the Band's version sounded so authentic, soaked in old Appalachian woodsmoke and whiskey, it had to be some long-forgotten mountain ballad. In fact, it was written in 1959 by Danny Dill and Marijohn Wilkin and originally recorded by Lefty Frizzell. However you describe it, the song is unforgettable. And nobody ever did it more memorably than the Band, with Rick Danko's lonesome vocal up front and center.

Richard is playing drums on this video. This video must be fairly close in time to when Richard died. RIP Richard, Rick and Levon. Garth is playing accordion.

Beth Chaja- Richard, Levon & Rick are gone. I think that’s what mrbobevans meant. Richard is drumming here.

I saw them at this period in London Ont. at Alumni Hall, and there were a lot of their old friends there, and more than a couple tears.

Just watched and recorded last waltz last night. They didn't do this song, unless it came they did it as an encore. Oh, Rick, we hardly knew ye! You had so much more to give!

martykate ; i own Last Waltz, and while some of it is breathtaking (oooo, the Staples on The Weight!) I was disappointed....seemed to be all about Robbie Robbie Robbie, much of The Band in the dark, Garth and Richard almost in witness protection. The Robertson-Scorcese bromance was so obvious I wanted to gag...and knowing Scorcese was so concerned with those d*mned chandeliers--moans he had to settle for two. Oh well, rock movies were a new thing.

Unique combination of talents: storytelling, evocation of a rural small town past for which we imagine there must be faded black and white photographs, diverse voices which harmonise so well, plenty of space left by all for each and a fusion of genres. Unrepeatable collective genius. That's what genius is.

I only saw the band once way back about '62 or so after they left Hawkins. It was at a nightclub called the Purple Onion a few miles northwest of Brampton Ont. Unfortunately a fight broke out just as we arrived, it got nasty and we left when it was apparent the band wasn't going on.

The most amazing thing about this song is that it sounds like it was written hundreds of years ago somewhere deep in the Appalachians Truth is that it was written in 1959 by Lefty Frizzell
