It was maybe 1996... bought an Eurailpass. At brazilian travel agency, I asked the agent who's selling the tickets, if he had heard about a train that aboard a ship... He started to laugh at me... for an instant I felt I had loosen an excelent opportunity of being quiet... Months later, I took a train from Amsterdam to Stockolhm and the train boarded a ship! Thanks for your videos, Dylan.

This channel is amazing, no over the top talking, no obnoxious close up face when your talking. And overall showing the experience in a way that gives quality rather than some middle aged man taking a train with rock music in the background. One of the few channels I have notifications on. My partner and I went between lockdowns in October 2020, and it was just strange, we walked in to everything we wanted to go and see, and did all we wanted to do. But we also saw a lot of small businesses closing down due to lack of patrons, including one of our favourite food places. Very sad indeed.

Reminds me that in my country we're taught to wait for vehicles to stop completely before crossing a zebra crossing. However in Europe I found out that if one waits like that, the vehicles will never stop. One has to be already crossing a zebra crossing before the vehicles arrive for them to stop.

This train was my introduction into long-distance train travel! The year was 2014, and I was going to the InnoTrans trade fair (mentioned in another comment of mine). It was part of a minor university study in Railway Engineering that I was doing back then. (Anyone else here from the HU Railtechniek minor? :-D ) Me being a railway enthusiast, I was rather stoked for this "field trip"! My class occupied about a quarter of the second class coach we were in. I remember everyone being rather exited about the journey! We were chatting, playing card games, exploring the train, marveling at what a relaxed way of travel it is, wandering about the platforms at longer stops, looking at the locomotive swap, looking out the back of the train, visiting the bistro car... lots of fun was had! After that journey, I was surprised I had never made such a journey before, especially being the railway enthusiast that I am. I have made several journeys since: a couple of journeys on Eurostar (my introduction into proper high-speed train travel) and Virgin Trains East Coast to Yorkshire in England, and one with Thalys to Paris. The latter one was another exiting group outing, where me and my colleagues from our Dutch office occupied a whole coach on the way to a company conference at Disneyland, Paris! Lots of fun was had, again!

Amsterdam Centraal station is in fact built on an artificial island in the harbour area. Thus, the houses you see on your left hand once were quais (if they were already built in 1889). For this type of train, the maximum allowed speed on NS tracks is 140 km/h. Only in Germany there are sections for faster trains. This footage may well be historical, since locomotive hauled trains will be history soon. Multi-voltage emu's are due to take over.

This train won't have more 1st class seating anytime soon. Their is simply not enough business demand on the route, except for Hannover-Wolfsburg-Berlin. But on this stretch their are plenty of ICE's covering the 1st class. Business demand between between Amsterdam and Berlin will just fly because of the time. 2nd class is usually very busy during the summer (except for 2020). A lot of backpackers use this train on a interrailticket.

Maybe you could perform these wifi speed checks twice in future videos if your train is crossing borders. I just ask because i traveled this precise train multiple times and i found the wifi to be much faster in the netherlands than in germany. This is largely because LTE infrastructure in germany is pretty bad to be honest. But this could also be interesting for other border crossings. Also just a little fun fact: Those ICs on this particular route are going to be replaced by the new ECx in 2023 which will be faster (230km/h) and adress the "compartment problem" you adressed at the end of your video.

Yeah, 4G coverage can be pretty shitty here in Germany (but at least it has improved over the last years), especially along the road tracks. But not only there, there are still many smaller towns where you're stuck with Edge...or, if you're unlucky, where you can't even make a phone call, because there is no cell signal whatsoever. Welcome to the technologically most advanced country in Europe. :/

The "BordBistro" car is a refurbished "InterRegio" car. I used the IR in the 1990ies often on the Offenburg - Konstanz Line. Later that all became IC with new colors. You see that by the different seat arrangements compared to an IC coach car. I used that IR train to travel to the university where I studied (Konstanz) from my parents house when I visited them. Was nice to get a fresh cold beer at those "BordBistro" cars on Sunday evening travelling back to Konstanz ;-)

In my opinion this is the train journey that is the most beautiful; that's how I imagine it. Of all the European trains, the DB IC, of course 1st class, is truly the top in every sense. That doesn’t mean I would have anything to object to any of the HST: ICE, Le Frecce italiane, TGV, AVE or other really fantastic trains. Right next to the DB IC, I would also classify OBB RJ, which in its 1 class or not so hard-to-reach business class brings true enjoyment in traveling by rail. After these observations, I would like to especially thank Dylan for this recorded trip from Amsterdam to Berlin, which I noticed in the celebratory video in which the topic was Q&A. If there is a train on a route in any country that resembles DB IC or OBB RJ in its simplicity and beauty, I believe that Dylan will discover it, record the trip and give it to us in one of his future videos. Thanks again.

A minor correction: the loc that hauls the IC from Amsterdam upto Bad Bentheim could technically reach 180 km/h (113 mph). But no speeds over 140 km/h (87 mph) are allowed within the Netherlands on conventional tracks because of the restrictive signalling system. On this particular stretch from Amsterdam heading east speed is limited to 130 km/h (81 mph).

DB is going to replace the ICs on this route with the new faster ECx in 2023 which won't have any compartments. But i understand that they are not serving food because you sometimes can get 1st class tickets for a very cheap price (about 40 euros was the lowest i have ever experienced). Including food would probably be a bit much from DBs perspective. Paying full price for 1st oder 2nd class only has the advantage that you can take any train traveling your booked route for the day.

Great vid! I took the night train from Centraal to Berlin Hbf in 2012. It was a rattletrap affair consisting of old Polish, Czech and possibly Bangladeshi coaches, what a mess! The staff looked and acted like they were retired Stasi and KGB agents. When we stopped at Bad Bentheim the police boarded with dogs. They dragged off some poor slob who probably had a backpack full of weed. I had some small amounts on me and the Argentinian I was drinking with was petrified when the dogs passed, you should have seen his face! Good time.

I personally don't think the €25 1st class upgrade is worth it on this particular service, unless you're set on sitting in a compartment. I was practically forced to buy a ticket from Berlin to the Netherlands two days before departure, around the time the corona situation first started and suspension of international train services was impending (I was studying in Berlin at the time but my family lives in the Netherlands). Long story short, the difference between 2nd and 1st class was like €4, so obviously I went for the 1st class product. While the seats were definitely a little nicer and having a private compartment (in my case) was cool, it definitely wouldn't have been worth the additional €25. DB's 2nd class product is more than adequate; in fact, I think it's more comfortable than 1st class in most NS trains. Leg room is absolutely amazing and the seats are really comfy. Not all types of carriages have power outlets, but then again, the outlets in my 1st class compartment didn't really work either.

You reliably have a Seat in First Class at all Times. Seat Reservation in Second Class may be cheaper but it still is very likely that you have to stand; e.g. if the Reservation System fails or someone else has reserved the same Seat, the Car where your Seat should be is missing (IC) or a different Type of Train than usual serves the Route (ICE). Plus you can choose to reserve a Seat in the Family Compartments but if you choose not to you might end up there anyway. It happened to me more than once that some Parents wanted me out because I'm 24 and don't have Kids. In my Experience, spending 4€ on 2nd Class Seat Reservation is a total Waste of Money and If I got the Chance to ride 1st Class for an additional 25€ I'd take it right away. Even if you can sit, an extremely crowded Train is a very unpleasant Experience but perfectly normal on Weekends in Germany.

@@Genius_at_Work Ah, thanks for your input. I only ever took this train outside of peak hours, so it wasn't worth the extra money for me personally, as it was pretty empty most of the time and I've never had any issues finding a seat. As a "poor college student," €25 on top of my €40-€45 Sparpreis ticket is pretty hefty. Had I chosen to travel during peak hours, I might have considered it, though.

@@MoViesDProductions I mostly travel from Hamburg to Basel. When the Trains are empty, like Monday-Thursday, only a few People have to stand but on the Weekend you can't even move inside. @@MoViesDProductions That explains it. The Deutsche Bahn is hideously unreliable and generally a dreadful Experience. Germany has one of the lowest Railway Budgets per Capita of all Industrialised Countries. If BMW started to build Trains, our Bavarian Secretary of Transport would be busting his Balls to improve the German Railway System (except he is an incompetent and corrupt Joke who wasted half a Billion of Taxpayer Money on a Road Toll that didn't come. You can google that insane Story). The biggest Problem in Germany is the Rail Network itself which has been drastically reduced in the 2000s to save Money. By the way: The coach you travelled in is a Eurofima coach with 160 km/h FIAT bogies from 1976/77 which was 100% identical to the SNCF A9M corail coach upon delivery. In contrast to SNCF, DB modified the bogies for 200 km/h almost immedeately after delivery fo the coaches. Fun fact: The leather seats we both like so much were designed by BMW designworks. I think, it was a good idea to ask a car manufacturer to design such seats. Unfortunately those seats were replaced by objects even the toughest fakirs would hardly be able to endure on for more than 30 minutes in ICE 4, Velaro D and some ICE3 (Class 403 / 406).

Love the IC trains, especially when being hauled by a DB BR 101. you have a noisy bogie below that compartment and that AC clicking would have driven me mad! TIP: Turn the AC knob 2cm to the left or right and it usually stop! I'm not a fan of compartments, unless my whole family is taking one (with no strangers). I'd have moved to the open 1st area, to get away from that noisy compartment! :o) Great video, as always! Austieg in fahrtrichtung rechts! Greetings from Newcastle / The Toon.

I took this exact train from Amsterdam to Berlin in late August of 2018, also in first class. The air conditioning wasn’t working well in the heat (a common problem in Germany I found - for some reason Germans just can’t build air conditioners as well as the French, Spanish or especially Americans), and it got even worse after we switched engines at the border. Ironically it was much cooler in 2nd class and in the cafe car, where I ended up spending much of the trip. I’m older and didn’t find the seat particularly comfortable, tho it’s not awful. Still, I’m not sure I’d bother paying extra for 1st class - didn’t seem worth $25 more, although most of my cabin mates were friendly (for much of the trip it was an older family on their way back to Hamburg). One thing I really enjoyed which I didn’t see here was the change in the look of the towns as we passed from West to the former East Germany. It was quite striking. It was a long hot trip and I’m not sure I’d do it again. I’m not usually a fan of flying and Berlin’s airports are somewhat difficult to get to, but this is definitely a trip where I’d consider taking the plane. Kind of surprising there isn’t an ICE route yet between Berlin and Amsterdam - I don’t even think one is proposed yet. 🤷‍♂️

sunspot42 It isn’t that Germans can’t build air conditioners. It is that DB can’t be relied upon to service them regularly, like they did a long time ago. They don’t maintain their equipment properly any more because they are too cheap. If you prefer the ICE you can easily take one to Koln or to Hannover and then make a connection to Berlin. Personally, I enjoy the IC much more than the ICE, and would never fly such short distances because flying generates a lot of carbon emissions.
@sunspot42

jeb bush It wasn’t just this train where I ran into dodgy German air conditioning. I hit it on busses in Potsdam, boats in Berlin, our offices on Ku’damm, grocery stores, everywhere. German engineering prowess pretty clearly doesn’t extend to air conditioning. They should send people to Detroit or Tokyo to learn how to make good air conditioners. I did consider going to Koln and hopping an ICE train from there to Berlin and might do that if I go thru Amsterdam again to Berlin. Which I’ll probably do next time I travel to Berlin since I find it much easier - and cheaper - to fly to London from San Francisco and stay a few days with a friend there, getting over jet lag without blowing money on hotels, before taking the Eurostar to Amsterdam (I could do Paris as well I suppose - maybe I’ll go through Lyon next time and do a little culinary tour).

As you pointed out, being seated in a compartment may not work well for a solo person, and in view of the pandemic, it can place strangers breathing toward each other in close quarters. I would opt for whatever class offered "saloon" seating. The compartment looked good, but I would hope for more seat recline. Taking this trip by train rather than plane provides city-center to city-center convenience, more legroom and more opportunity to walk around, and good scenery to watch. Good report!

I actually live along the track just before you cross the river IJssel near Deventer. I used to take this train to London a lot, switching trains in Amersfoort for the train to Rotterdam. Overnight Ferry from Hook of Holland to Harwich. I can really recommend that ferry. IJ is pronounced a bit like "ay". the digraph "ei" sounds the same and is also the word for egg.

As you say, the waterfront is on the far side of the railway station, because the railway line and station were built out over the water and destroyed Amsterdam's harbour. Not popular with everyone at the time, because larger/taller boats couldn't access the city from the Zuiderzee (now called the IJsselmeer), making Amsterdam more like an inland city.

Just catching up with your European Summer Travels. I'm very impressed with the standard of these loco hauled German Intercity Coaches as refurbished. The mix of compartment and saloon interior layouts is interesting. Downunder we are expecting great things from the next iteration of the Bombardier V/Locity for long distance services in Victoria. Plans for the Melbourne to Albury trains reveal a family friendly cafe style area in the proposed centre car of the 3 car set (being built on a budget). I suspect that the 3 cars may require expansion to 4 or 5 as popularity overcomes austerity on behalf of the service planners.

How relaxed and quiet it is in the morning, You would not think this is a capital city. And the canal looks so nice and clean, when I was there in 2013 there was sadly lots of rubbish in there. But great city to visit that I can recommend. I liked it. And regarding the IC - I know people are always on on the speeds an ICE train can make -that is permitting the suitable infrastructure is in place. My hometown is lserved by an ICE line, yet the infrastructure isn't really there to make up top speeds, a curvy track, so it can only go as fast as an IC would do ;-) But I also enjoy train travel, very relaxed to get from A to B, you don't have to drive, can relax and look out or walk around. Night trains are cool too. Maybe try that some time, it is an adventure :-)

@@finnibat That's the first time for me thx. For the comfort the ICE4 is not good as well because of the seats, probably on of the worst first class seat among all high speed trains worldwide. There is a very spacious bicycle compartment too, much more spacious than the ICE bike compartments... (Pity you didn't show this...) I love how you let it be known, that Railway's have a long history, as well as starting in our beloved Blighty too, although never forgetting how much our civilization of today, was built around the Railway's built by the ' Eternal-Boi-Within '. Hopefully your point on the lack of Open Saloon Seating, will alter when the coaching stock is renewed, although I have a suspicion that the present stock will be replaced by Dosto Double Deck Stock.

Sometimes you find IC-trains whose cars have a more "boxy" design, with the doors going higher up (at an angle). Those are re-used "Meridian" trains, which was a short-lived luxury-offering likened to a modern mixture of the ICE and the famous TEE-trains of the past. Once they scrapped the program they repainted the locomotives (Series 101) from gray to red and re-used the trains as ICs
