I never knew what a guitar 'setup' was, and I played a baritone uke that was off by about a quarter inch at the octave fret. I figured this out on my own one day while I was taking my engineering curriculum. It never occurred to me that someone could move the bridge where it needed to be, so I tuned my uke to make second and third position chords approximately correct, and abandoned playing open strings. Worked like a charm for three decades or so.

I know I am late to this one! A 50-something guy who is picking up the guitar again after a couple decades off, and never having been that good to begin with. I really appreciate your videos, having just found your channel and watched your take on over-wrapping LP style guitars. I like your direct approach and have given me a lot to sit with. I just bought an Ibanez Gio, which is miles ahead of what "entry level" guitars were in the 80s and 90s, wow!!! I had been thinking I needed to automatically change the nut in the Gio, but am now not as worried about it. I will see how long it lasts. Anyway, I just subscribed and am now onto your setup video, which is something I need to learn. Thanks again!

I've played guitar for a lot of years and never once did my own setup. Actually dropped my newest guitar off for a setup at the local music store today. Is kind of embarrassing thinking about it 😂. Man this has quickly become one of my favorite channels. Thanks for taking the time to make these, Dylan! The help and information they provide is priceless! 👍❤️ If I could just figure out what's causing this sitar sound on my high e string. It seems to be the graph tech nut. They'll replace it if I can't get it lined out so that's a plus.
@tombworld90124 жыл бұрын
A string tree (or a shorter one if you already have one, but don't go nuts on it) should fix that...the sitar sound is usually caused by a lack of sufficient downward string pressure on the tuning side of the nut. One way to check is to capo the string between the nut and the tuning machine and see if you still have the problem. Another potential solution would be to file the nut slot so that the fret side is higher than the headstock side so that the string only rides the playing edge of the nut.
@JC-111114 жыл бұрын
@@tombworld9012 I fixed it a while ago. The breakover?(or maybe takeoff?) angle on the nut wasn't right. A few mins with a nut file fixed it right up. 👍I figured this out because putting more angle on the string didn't help, so I figured I'd lift the string and try again. Bam! Gone. So I knew then that the string was laying in the slot, touching the entire slot from the front edge to the rear edge. So I sloped the rear of the nut, closest to the tuners and it fixed it. I hope that wasn't confusing lol
@tombworld90124 жыл бұрын
@@JC-11111 Not confusing at all! It was my second suggestion to a T. Having the nut slots flat causes some weird vibrations in the string...almost like there are two strings because you're getting vibrations in the string on the other side of the nut where it shouldn't ever vibrate. A sharp enough angle on the nut (breakover? I dunno the technical term) keeps all the vibrations on the fret side where they should be.

So glad this video popped up in my feed even if its 2yrs old lol... so I bought one of these.. ( the pink one ) and the reason was I've always been a solid rhythm player and started learning scales and playing around wit some of the pentatonics and it dawned on me that perhaps a neck that's 3/4 the size would be a great way to ease into 4 finger solo type playing... it worked btw I recommend using this guitar for anyone who is having the problem I mentioned the smaller neck really helps u progress quickly then u just pick up ur daily axe and boom ur no longer a fish outta water... after that I bought a glass slide and boom decided to try the same thing... set the strings up almost max height open e tuned it and that guitar is still to this day my slide guitar... best part ... in a pinch you have a stratocaster birthday gift at the ready for any nieces or nephews or ur own kids... I'll be the first to admit this little strat is far better than the strat knock off I learned on when I was a kid... TTFN ta ta for now...

Really digging that white Strat. Maybe I should've gotten white. Lol They can definitely be set up correctly. You hear people complain that cheap guitars won't intonate correctly a lot of the time because they're cheap but my $150 Strat intonates perfectly without even removing any saddle springs. 😁 Then again, I'm pretty convinced I got a good one by the luck of the draw. It's like I told someone yesterday...with inexpensive guitars, you might get a good one here and there. With expensive guitars, you might get a dud here and there. That's the difference.

In times of relatively good guitars with very attractive prices this video is in perfect timing :). One thing i noticed with a couple of guitars is that after doing all this adjustments you´ve mentioned,some fret buzz can ocur if you want a medium to low action. i was using a straight metal plate(long as 3 frets) to check for "rocking" on the buzzing fret between the adjacents fret (i´ve just saw this somewhere, not sure if is really the correct way of doing it :P) somehow it works in order to identify frets that are a little higher than they should. PS; what is the name of that stand you are using to hold the neck! seems perfect :)

I can't help but be super curious about that robert keeley yelled at me mug. Is it a self-made joke? Is it an atonement, a reminder, an apology, of life change? Maybe we'll never learn, maybe we will. Some people like to set the intonation fretting the note as if they were on a gig, pushing it a bit harder than you'd fret it while setting up. Just to account for the way they use the instrument.

@henrikb.folkestad32043 жыл бұрын
Lots of great guitarists use .09s. They're not "baby" strings, they're just lighter which give them a brighter tone and make them easier to bend. They can also be tuned higher without snapping, on the flipside they are not great for downtuning. But they're proper strings just like .017s.
@JB-su3eq3 жыл бұрын
Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck (also used 11's), Eddie Van Halen, Mark Knopfler, Dimebag Darrel (standard tuning guitars), Joe Perry, Angus Young, Randy Rhodes, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani all used 9s regularly. B.B. King and Billy Gibbons used .008s. Don't believe that thicker strings equal "beefier" tone. They dont. Past 10's...the only thing you're doing is muddying up the sound on modern pickups...especially the interplay between the low E and A strings. Get an amp that you can crank and play with a low volume on the guitar itself while playing with a very light touch. You can make 009's sound like the heaviest thing in the world. Hendrix knew this as his lowest E was almost always an unheard of .038...even though occasionally he would set up his high E and B strings with a standard .010. When you hear of people like Stevie Ray Vaughan and Joe Bonamassa using .013's and .011's the most....the thing most people don't understand is that Stevie often tuned down a half-step for live performances and near the end of his career switched to .010's and Joe Bonamassa top wraps a lot of his Les Pauls and tunes down the older guitars a half step. ...and you are still a kid. That is also not a bad thing at all. Enjoy it and thrive in it while you can. Don't take it for granted.

What is problem with 9? I put 52 on my low E for old school thrash metal and I dont like it at all compared to my 46 on low E. It is not about the tension, it is about brightness, tightness of the low notes come out better on 46 compared to 52. So beefier string is not always better. P/S. Forgot to mention my neck scale is 25.5".
