@DylanTalksTone I currently own a modified Epiphone Les Paul Classic Worn, a modified Squier Sonic Strat, and am building a Partscaster based on a Tele Player body, that is getting a 72 Tele Custom conversion(a minor misstep or two but worked it out). All three have a Super Distortion or derivative in the bridge position(Super Distortion, Sugar Chakra, and Super Distortion T respectively). It’s in the other pickup positions I have varied it a little to make each a bit different sounding, with my Tele project having a P90 neck, with the idea of making it into a pop punk/emo/alt rock focused instrument. I usually have an idea in my head for each project, but I adapt as I go. I’m looking to add a P90 ES-339 style, a regular Tele with slightly hot pickups, an offset type, and maybe a Gibson Modern Lite Les Paul. I’ve often found I don’t care for the stock pickups, but that’s an easy enough change to make. So much you can do to personalize a guitar. I’ve had one neck, the stock neck on my Strat, I found personally unplayable, but not because there was anything inherently wrong with it, but because the thickness of it caused me discomfort and pain when trying to play(getting a touch arthritic in my hands unfortunately). Overall, if I don’t find one version of an instrument I like, I keep looking until I do or modify it so that it is to my liking.

Regardless of any improvement in awareness of" quality" I cannot get beyond the idea of diminishing returns". I keep a lookout for a combination of options, price, and quality. I improve the quality of workmanship with my own labor to satisfy my expectation of "improvement" but never take my eye off the relative value. All this changes with increase in understanding and awareness until I realize I need to replace an instrument to yield the desired improvement. Increase in awareness always precedes action. The need to improve brings me back to channels like yours.

For pet spending, cat litter is more expensive than cat food and I use up a box of litter a lot faster than I go through a bag of food. But for guitar, for the past year or so most of my hobby spending has gone to learning -- I hired a theory teacher and a technique teacher. My hobby budget is $200/mo. and I keep it under that with the remainder going into a gear fund. Channels like yours and KYG have enabled me to spend much less on gear because when I buy a guitar I'll get one in rough shape that I can fix up with a screwdriver. I've found that people who don't know to take care of their guitars will sell them for cheaper when they get frustrated with screwing up the intonation and the bridge height and pickup height and so on. Reverend is my brand and the last one I got was half the price of a new one. So thank you for helping me spend less.

All these things are related but are rife with misunderstanding.

Every new martin I have had I had to have the saddle lowered a bit. Normal for a Martin. I bought a new d-18 in 1971. I bought a new d-35 in 2005 and a hd-28 in 2009. I had to have the action lowered on all three.

Dylan, what is the usual turnaround time on orders if it's something unusual? I ordered a pickguard set up a while back and am not so patiently waiting for it to arrive. I know you are busy. I'm not trying to rush or annoy you. I'm just wondering what the usual wait time is. Thanks

A good pot usually have also a good feelig, being made with more precision, care and expensive lubricants to make it turn smooth and damped. Further, it will last longer, with no cracking for long years to come. Same for capacitors: good ones will retain their face value through time, temperature change and high moisture. "Tone" has no room here, as it belongs to electrical characteristcs. So yes I usually spend a lot for good, industrial grade components.

I currently have two favorites I've been playing daily. My top one is an Airline Roy Smeck II and the second one I just bought used is a Squire Paranormal Cabronita Thinline Telecaster that I recently had some work done on. I had a fret leveling, crown and new bone nut installed. Both play wonderfully.

I can change the voicing of my JB humbucker so it doesn't squawk so much with a tube screamer by adjusting the screws. I can hear a gain & tone difference as I compare my SC neck & mids to the JB HB. I have a no-load split on the JB & set the height to balance the volume of the bridge with the tone knob no-load pot to 3 to SC PUs. I am grounding out the non-adjustable north side. I then adjust the screws to match specific string tones via their sonic. properties.

I have four favorites! Two that I made, one that was my first, and one I bought from Fender. Two are in different tunings. I keep them on a rack next to me, and, due to different songs being in different tunings, I keep them in regular rotation.... My first is a piece of crap, so, I keep "fixing it up".... Still love it, though.... They all get play.

Tone wood is REAL, btw... Move a mahogany body... I have two with all rosewood necks... one with wenge. I have played a number of necks, but the density of wenge and rosewood for a neck.... LOVE IT! I know it isn't "tone", per se, but, the density.... I can FEEL where the strings are in their vibration.... All strats, btw. Different neck profiles. Different fret heights and thickness... Just NEED that density of the wood.

Your techniques for counterclockwise wind would be nice. I just got a Mojotone Winder. Not that I want to turn it into a business. I'm becoming more and more of a start to finish builder for personal purposes. But I have noticed I am becoming more and more peculiar about my specs. Each build has specific needs. I am using multiple sets trying to get a desired tone. It is quite simply not economically feasible to just keep spending $400-500 on every build trying to get it right. Had the same issue with nut and fretwork in the beginning. Can't afford to pay $500 a guitar to guitar shop when I can do it myself for the initial cost of tools and materials.

I think you're testing with the gauss meter on a standalone pickup is not good data, it's not including the distance to the strings. I would think the screw adjustments should be compensating for the curvature/radius of the guitar strings with the radius of the fret board, like adjusting the bridge saddles height to match the curvature of the fretboard. If you were to have all the screws flat and adjust the pickup up to the correct height for the outside strings, and then you adjust the inner screws up a tiny bit to make them the same distance from the strings as the outside, that would be the correct adjustment to compensate for the curvature of the fretboard and bridge. Now, whether that little adjustment makes any difference to the sound that the pickups are picking up, I would think it would probably be minimal, but optimal. But with the separate magnetic tolerances of each pole piece I don't know if any of that would matter anyway. Also, depending on the set radius, whether it be 7.5" or 16", or a compound radius, that could add even more variables to the mix.
@koreylawКүн бұрын
Look at Stratocaster pickups they're usually already compensated to be higher in the center. And also consider the screws are only in one side of a humbucking pickup, so you're really only adjusting the height of half of that pickup.

Hi Dylan. I just found this video and have a question. l got confused when you went from talking about the front edge of the trem system and a 1mm gap, to placing post-it papers @ the back. So, are we to tighten the six screws at the front and then raise them to a 1 mm gap?

Hey Dylan, Feel free to steal my idea and make a lot of money doing so. :) I am a blind Blues guitarist. I have a rig I really enjoy. I have a set of guitars that work for me. They have adhesive "bump dots" on the back of the neck that act as tactile fret markers, for example. I've upgraded the hardware, wiring and pickups on most of them. I have selected a couple of amps I really enjoy. They are not modeling amps, nor do they require menu-diving, but use straightforward front-panel (or top-panel) controls. What I do not have are effects. I have struggled for years looking for an effects solution. The power of the AxeFX, Helix, GT-*, GX-*, GP-*, etc. units are of no value to a blind guitarist. We all know what a pain it can be to manipulate the complex user interfaces on these devices. In frustration I decided to create a git hub project to design a solution that would work for me. See: github.com/dave-richards/bluesbox The wiki contains a lot of material discussing the idea, goals and possible effects that the Blues Box might include. I wish I could buy one of these, today. Vendors like BOSS, Line6, Headrush, etc. have a distinct advantage building such a product, as the core of their products is fundamentally software, and they can re-use and re-scope existing products to create new variants. BOSS and Line6 do this sort of thing all of the time. Nevertheless, the barrier to entry is high for new market entrants. Analog DIY effects have a much lower development cost, but lead to more expensive products in the end. Even so, I have not found one of these software product vendors interested in the Blues Box. So, here's an idea for you...
