I don't remember where I heard this, specifically but it could be mentioned that a good chunk of Jeff's early popularity is due to him being written as a blank slate (albeit unintentionally). People just project their ideal version of Jeff onto the story and boom, you got yourself the genesis of Internet horror

I always thought of Jeff, Eyeless Jack, Toby, Clockwork, Rake, etc. as being the 2010s internet teen equivalent of slasher icons like Jason, Freddy, Leatherface, Michael Myers, Ghostface, etc.

On he topic of whether Jeff is a "Joker Ripoff" or not, I want to point out that even though the original JTK image predates The Dark Knight, it doesn't predate the Batman comic "Arkham Asylum - A Serious House on Serious Earth" from 1989 which features a lot of similar-looking artwork (by the great Dave McKean) of the Joker's face under harsh lighting, blurry, and wearing a bug-eyed smile. Jeff resembles this version of the Joker just as much as he does Ledger's, whether coincidentally or not.

4:29:23 Hiii I’m the creator of this Jeff the Killer short film called “The Legend Within The Dream Machine”! I wanna give fun small facts about the short! How Jeff Killed Christmas was a real creepypasta that Dylan read in the 17 hour Creepypasta iceberg! Dylan was kind enough to give me the audio raw without any of the music. I drew Dylan as a vampire because it fit the spooky vibe and there is a gag at the end where he turns into a owl instead of a bat, though he isn’t a real vampire but just likes to dress up as one to mess with people. With anything he does that humans aren’t capable of being the powers that the dream machine holds changing him and not powers of his own. These two characters Have names! They’re in the credits and their names are Melvin and Lisa. They are a small jab of how bad horror movies have the main protagonists make dumb choices. Lisa and Melvin do the same, they seek out shelter in this spooky mansion with all kinds of urban legends serounding it. “You contributed something to the jeff the killer universe” Dylan do you not realize, by making a 17 hour iceberg and a 4 hour retrospective, you have been contributing something from the start!!! The mansion this all takes place in is a mere facade of a mansion, it has mysterious supernatrual energy that makes you hallucinate characters, even if you have never known about them. The layout and appearance of it also changes depending on the person that resides in it. It gets passed from owner to owner at random, it is not the person that chooses to reside in it but the dream machine that chooses it’s next resident. Yea I wrote lore for it cuz then I knew what I was drawing- Also Smile Dog is in it just for fun theres not any lore with that. Feel free to ask if you have a question lol!

Man, my heart absolutely bleeds for the creator of Clockwork. I cant imagine having to endure the endless vicious mockery of the 2010's internet. I can acknoledge that the story is pretty bad, and that it does show a lack of understanding when it comes to trauma, and how bad people are in real life. But at the same time, I can remember writing stories down a couple of years ago with some darker tones, and returning to it a year ago, wanting to continue that work. Only to discover that it was so out of touch and unworkable, that I had to deeply rewrite it from the start over many months. I can also remember how the internet was back around 2012, where a lot of people were into edgy stuff, creepypastas, Amnesia series from PewDiePie and fanfics. So this story isnt really anything out of the ordinary for what was happening around that time, so having some poor teen endlessly mocked for doing what was pretty standard is also really sad. Even this video went a bit too hard on many of these stories, tbh, despite acknoledging the fact that a lot of these creators regret their own work. Its tragic that a lot of these people instead of seeing their work as a part of a journey, they see it as a deep regret, a wound that never wants to close fully. I do hope that the creator of Clockwork can someday just scroll on their phone, looking at the many fanarts of their character and finally come to peace with it, like it seems that the creator of Nina the Killer did. Even if the story is subpar, the amount of passionate and talented people over the years working on art for this character is really heartwarming.
@TheAbigailDee2 ай бұрын
Yeah it gives a lot of traumacore written by a child vibes. It's really misguided because the person who wrote it was still developing their writing and developing their literal brain! And the bullying for things they couldn't understand like "glamorizing abuse". Like you know why a lot of kids and preteens write about abuse? Yeah. It's really heartbreaking how many of those stories were cried for help. Even if the reasons were much more benign, they were still mentally ill kids expressing themselves. Poorly, but I mean I know fully grown adults that express themselves in way more harmful ways. She deserves a million apologies

With Jeff the Killer making a comeback, this was no doubt the perfect topic for your Halloween video. It's nice that you've gone through everything important involved with the character as well as the culture surrounding him. I don't remember where I first heard of Jeff the Killer, but I'm certain that I saw the image when I first looked into creepypastas. I never got into it myself so the entire culture around it past me by until people looked back on it years later. I think it was the Internet Historian's video on the original story or your first Creepypasta iceberg video that got me familiar with the character. The original story is amusing in all the ways you mentioned. It's poorly written, but it is amusing to see something from someone both new to writing, but also young enough to not have the emotional maturity or jadedness that comes with age. It makes for work with some of the most honest passion one could create, even if that honesty also has the side effect of being awkward. I think the same for all the rip offs as well. Not going to lie, I was never that interested in the remakes. I'm not sure why, but I think part of it is that because they are remaking a popular story, there's a more self aware aspect to it which takes away from the emotional honest the original story and its rip offs had. That said, the Pastra version is very solid and I'm glad it's gotten the attention it's had. The video game section was interesting, though few looked all that good. I wasn't surprised to see what amounts to visual novels and collect the pages games. The fan films interested me more than expected. I think it's because while writing a story does take work, it's another force of work to make a fan film, even if the results are not the best. It's also interesting to see how the filmmaker interpret the character and story in general. Also, it was cool that you gave CherriNGT's video a mention. The connection between Jeff and the slit mouth woman was an interesting note to end the history of Jeff's history on. Your comments on Jeff being the internet's OC is interesting and I agree with it. It reminds me of the old folk and fairy tales and how they were retold through the ages with each teller adding and taking away bits of the story. While I lean more toward creator authority, there will always be a special place in my heart for these kind of folk stories as they are great at lighting a spark for creatives. I've said it many times, but I love how deep you go into with your video topics. I also love how you went hard into the culture surrounding Jeff this killer for this video as I think that is where you find the main appeal of the character. You mentioned the power fantasy aspect and how many teenagers gravitate toward it because of the feeling of powerlessness and the surge of strong emotions without the maturity to handle them being the biggest pull toward the character and I couldn't agree more. To send off my long comment, Happy Halloween, God bless, and excellent work.

I will say that while I was making my Jeff the Killer retrospective, I wasn't really aware how much of the author's own experience was put into Clockwork. I was merely focused on analyzing the story on its own merits since I tend to follow Death of the Author when deconstructing a piece of work. I still stand by my criticisms towards the character and the story, but I probably could've been a little less harsh and I feel a little awful about it now given that I just tore that character apart in my video. Considering I have plans to write and narrate a Ticci Toby "reboot" for my channel that includes Clockwork as a pivotal character (along with a very high effort Jeff VS shitpost that i'd like for Mr. Creepypasta to narrate when its done), I will do my best to keep this new information and the original author's intent for the character in mind as I go about writing Nat and her interactions with Toby. Hopefully it can be a version of the character that the original creator can look back on fondly, because while I thought the story of Clockwork was bad, I do still respect the character. She's not too dissimilar to Jeff in that regard. I genuinely believe that Jeff and all his clones were an important part of the creepypasta phenomenon back in the day. I don't think the Slenderman on his own was enough for creepypasta to have blown up the way it did. Characters like Jeff and the like showed people that anyone could be a part of that community if they were willing to try their hand at writing stories. It didn't necessarily mean that they the stories they wrote were going to be good, but Jeff simply existing at all kinda gave people permission to express themselves. So even if I don't exactly love all these stories, I think they're all still important works of online fiction.

One of my favorite Jeff the killer unofficial sequels is one about Jane and Jeff where it starts out pretty standard from Jane’s perspective tracking him down and then it eventually devolves into Jeff turning out to be an actual demon with soul and time powers and him and Jane having a primal battle of good vs evil, even though Jane is also evil because she’s established to just kill random people earlier in the story. Also damn the exclusive video is like the one thing that makes me consider getting a subscription, I like insanity and its sequel a lot, I’m making a continuation of it and everything, also another KZbinr has actually covered welcome to the mansion on KZbin, someone called Mia Brujita. And one last thing I doubt most creepypasta oc writers were inspired by Rob Zombie’s rendition of Halloween, I think everyone being so awful to the main characters is just a combination of the fact that they’re mostly power fantasies and therefore the audience is supposed to like the killers so the authors over correct by giving them comedically awful lives to make them more sympathetic and also the fact a lot of them were teenagers venting about their life and probably exaggerated some things.

Watched the other half of the video and it’s a little disappointing you didn’t get to the sequels of the 2015 remake, I think some of them are really good especially the Nina one. The morgue files gotta be my favorite remake tho. The acting is really good and it follows the vague plot of the og while actually making Jeff scary. Also it’s kind of a shame no one has really made a good or atleast outstanding game about Jeff, I guess it’s just harder compared to making a good story. Also weird no one has really made Jeff movie, seems like an easy thing to make a slop thriller movie out of it. The slit mouth woman is something I weirdly never thought about but they are weirdly similar, fits in with my vision of Jeff being really vain and considering himself the peak of beauty. Anyways really good video I feel like one of the things that makes Jeff so enduring is how maleable he is, you can make him funny, hot, scary, anything you want him to be really

In the 2015 4th place contest winner, Jeff's ex-gf that killed herself was named Katy Robinson, the same name of the real life girl that when this was written, people still believed killed herself due to harassment and her image being made into the Jeff image (surprised you didn't talk about that rumor in the video btw). Very weird and in poor taste to insert a supposed suicide victim tied to Jeff the Killer in your Jeff the Killer creepypasta.
@DylantheKnightOwl2 ай бұрын
The Katy Robinson rumor was proven completely false, though I had never thought about the 4th remake entry taking inspiration from that, which is interesting but yeah I didn't include it because I'll be honest the search for the true identity of the Jeff image is interesting but I didn't find it that interesting to talk to much about it in this video, mainly because it is still a search that has no conclusion yet, that's why i focused on the slit mouth woman connection more in that section just to bring something new to the table to it. But yeah if that was the inspiration for the 4th entry that is for sure in bad taste all the same lol.
