Nice job. I’m ready for the build!
@FluxCondenser3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yeah, I’m ready to start actually building this thing myself. I was going to do the build first and worry about the faceplate later, but it was bugging me as I wasn’t sure I’d be able to repair it. I was afraid I might have to buy a second parts unit just for a faceplate and wanted to give myself some time if that was the case. Really happy how it came out and I glad I don’t need to go that route. Stay tuned!

I didn’t think you could do it, well done.

Thanks, John! Gotta admit, I wasn’t sure I could do it, either. As I said in the video, what a relief!

Nice work! Not sure how you knew when to stop with the bending since you were doing it blind.
@FluxCondenser3 жыл бұрын
Well, keep in mind my videos are highly edited, so you don’t see me constantly taking the plate off the vice to check my progress. The raised cardboard really helped reduce risk of me going too far with the wire brush, so that was a nice safety net.
@Enigma7583 жыл бұрын
@@FluxCondenser I almost thought you were going to smack it with a hammer! (with a metal plate in between). I've done that (with protective covering of course)!
@FluxCondenser3 жыл бұрын
Ha! Yeah, I did try to squeeze the plate flat in the vice at first, but left those scenes out as it didn’t amount to much. It really needed to be bent right at the crease-point and somewhat far back at that to get it flat.

Thanks, Dan! I’m hardly a pro when it comes to metal refinishing, but I picked up a few tricks from a vintage bicycle restoration a did a couple of years ago.

I would be tempted to use a rattle can automotive clear laquer to protect the surface.
@FluxCondenser3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Andrew. A friend of mine recommended the same thing. My plan is to keep an eye on the surface and if it shows signs of oxidation, I’ll use a light polish to remove it from time to time. If it’s bad, I’ll apply a clear coat as you suggest to protect it longer-term.
@andrewmackay20013 жыл бұрын
@@FluxCondenser Only thing to watch is the lettering which may react to the lacquer. I use acrylic which is pretty timid but seems to last quite well. I found the cellulose tended to go like crazy paving if left in the sun and sprayed onto bare metal. You could obviously mask the printed surface and just spray the refurbished Al.

@@andrewmackay2001 Thanks for sharing your experience, Andrew. I’ll keep that in mind. Yes, I’d only clear-coat the surfaces I had to cut down. The main portion of the panel with the labels would definitely be masked off.
