Dynam Meteor 5 vs 12 Blade EDF Comparison

Have you ever wondered how changing out your 5-blade EDF unit for a 12-blade EDF unit would change your jet’s performance? In this video we’ll do some quick comparison using a Dynam Meteor sport jet with both the stock 5 -blade unit and a similar sized unit with a 12-blade fan.

I just ordered my first RC plane. It’s a 12 edf jet out of a KZbin ad on 90% discount and I have no idea what to expect. This video really helped give me an idea of what I just got myself into! Edit: I’m not expecting this kind of aircraft, and I wouldn’t recommend doing what I did, unless you’re willing to take a risk on a scammy ad. Edit2: I should have done my research. I’m positive that I just fell for a bait and switch. Sorry for all this nonsense.

I left the standard 5 blade unit in , installed a 80a ESC , installed a savox servo on the elevator , made a exhaust sleeving out of x-ray sheet to smooth out the ruff foam and went 5 cell with throttle control , turned the wheel legs 180 degrees so the wire is in the wheel well to reduce drag and now this meteor as a rocket such a blast to fly now unlimited vertical climb from take off

I have in the mean time installed a 12 blade 6 cell setup , thrust tubes , removed the canopy and closed up the cockpit and smooth it out to be a dart . Clocks 217kmh with out dive and out of shallow dive 230kmh

I have 4 Freewing 64mm planes. They all have the same thrust, but fly at vastly different speeds. I don't mind the whine and the 5-bladed fans are fine. When I move up to 70mm or 80mm, I will definitely opt for the 12-bladed units, but I'm happy to hear that the flight performance wasn't too much of a difference. I'm sticking to my stock units for now, but my next plane will have lots more get up and go!

Thanks for a brilliant video - Hobbyking have discontinued the mii-anemometer, and all the others don't seem to go above 65mph, so the last part of your tests is not possible. (unless you spend megabucks!). I have a Meteor which needs an upgrade, and will certainly use your info, diolch yn fawr, Den , Cymru (Wales)

Just fly it stock on 5s. Fan and ESC hold up fine and it performs much better.

I felt like there were some mixed messages. Clearly the statis thrust, amp draw etc showed the 12 blade had highee numbers, but from your on field comments and a subjective view of the aircraft, the real world performance was much the same. For someone wanting a 12 blade fan, your only reason to get one appears to be for sound and possibly availability.

I was expecting a bit more performance increase. Ultimately it did boil down to a better sound. That being said, the overall performance is quite respectable with either unit.

I have 12 blade and 6 blade.power 6blade.if 12 it just smooth sound.for my f35 and f22

Did I miss the mention of flight time? A 5 blade setup will allow more flight time because of the less amps consumed. Makes more sense to keep the 5 blade If performance is about the same even with the whinier sound of the fan

It's all about what's most important to you. I went back to the lower blade count fan as the sound isn't that important to me. Others might feel differently.

Definitely the 10 and 12 b. they have a more pleasant sound. but do not forget that 5b. at the same power it produces more thrust than that of 10 or 12b.

@@manuelverdugo1737generally higher blade count produces more torque, less top speed. Lower blade, less torque higher speed. So a 5 blade will probably eat more runway but once flying and on step, performance will be marginally better than high blade count. But there are many more variables that figure in - kv, C rating of battery, blade pitch and weight of the model.

@@modeljetjuggernaut4864 yes but to same watts is best effyciency. a 5b requires between 480-520 watts to deliver one kilogram of thrust. a 10 blades about 565-600 watts for the same.

You need to use the same motor for test

Sadly, that isn't possible. If you run the same motor using different fan blade number, you'll likely damage the motor. This comparison is as like for like as possible. Think of this analogy: if you're having a food eating contest and you want to see how fast you're able to eat 250grams of a given food and one is soup and the other is a sandwich, you're going to use your hands for the sandwich and a spoon for the soup. There MUST be an appropriate motor match for any given edf with respect to fan blade count.

@@nickhayley That is the purpose of the test results, to see exact watt meter numbers. Instead of having a lower grade 5 or 6 blade, the test shall have started w a high end motor and ESC same to same.

Dynam sell their planes with inferior power plant so they can make more later with upgrades. in the end you will pay more than those higher quality brands.

Am mostly reading the comments, the test comparison is a waste of time as it does not have the same electronics/components. *the primary difference, besides the whistling 5b noise, is different amps and kv motor! FYI, you can buy small remote for your presentation and no need to be reaching down to the keyboard for next slide or time it for each slide.
