I wonder sometimes who I am Tip-Top...LOL.I just everything Reggae,EVERYTHING,for the past couple of years I have been delving into the Muso's, Producers and Engineers of early Reggae up to the Digital Age. These Guys were brilliant and in my opinion the best are Winston Wright,Jackie Mittoo the incomparable Ernest Ranglin,Tommy McCook,Skully,Gladstone Anderson,Coxone,Lee Perry,Linden Pottinger,Duke Reid ho God I could go on and on. I had the Great fortune to stay in JA in 1965 from the UKsteve

Excuse my grammar below,I mean't to say "This incompareable Hammond and other Organ player(Winston Wright) was Brilliant" His body of work was massive, and thankfully have his beautiful tunes to remember him by. Winston attended Glenmuir High School in May Pen,whilst still at school he joined the Mavericks a local band in May Pen.he would go out at nights, with the ire of his father .Due to his ability,Tommy McCook invited Winston to join Duke Reids SUPERSONICS,the rest is history as they say.

Hi Tiptop, Just to let you know that the good folk of May Pen have named a street Wright Avenue in honour and remembrance of Winston's life. It is close to Glenmuir High School, where he studied and taught to play so brilliantly the organ(on a very old Clavinette Organ at the time) regards steve

Hi Tiptop, Just a small note to let you know that the folks in May Pen have named a street in the town,in remembrance and in honour of Winston. It's call Wright Avenue, close to Glenmuir High School where Winston studied including his Brilliant Organ playing on an aged Clavinette Organ!!!!!! Nice touch I thought...steve

To continue from below,Winston Wright(who you should know)performed and recorded with virtually every producer from Coxone Dodd to Tuff Gong and all in between. This incompareable Hammond and other organs was Brilliant. From 1971 to 1975 he recorded at the Dynamic Sound Studios at 15 Bell Road,Kingston,JA. Warwick Lynn,(Panther)Roy Cousins(Royals fame)(Tamoki or Wambesi lables) did most of the producing,Karl Pitterson usually the Engineer. Others to record were Prince Far I,Melodians,Cables etc

I believe the organ sound here is not a Hammond but a Lowrey.

Yes. I believe it is a Lincolnwood model.

tiptopsound I think you're right - I play a Lincolnwood SSO-25 in my studio and it absolutely nails Winston Wright tones, which leads me to believe they kept the same organ (or a Heritage spinet model) at Dynamics studio. Out of curiosity, where did you get your information regarding the organ?

mihrantheupsetter I determined that it's a Lowrey; it's in the Harder They Come so I was able to more or less determine the model. I have a photo of what was most likely the rig but can't post it on here.

Not sure what the " house" organ at Dynamic at the time was, after Byron Lee purchased the Studio (formally W.I.R.L.)from Edward Seaga....what I do know is the studio was completely upgraded by Byron Lee. As for "The Harder They Come" there were two keyboard players,Gladstone Anderson (The Law fame) and the incomparable Winston Wright on the track...what is well know is Winston's "Kachunka organ rhythm playing throughout the song. Moreover it is Winston who towards and at the end of the song has those odd organ chords that are so effective,he was great and well known for this type of improvisation......we see this in a lot of his body of work over the years........The Liquidator is a particularly fine example...........he was renown for his long notes,as Fernando mentions below.Brilliant he was and we have his music to prove it.Winston worked for virtually every producer and was ensconced at Dynamic between 1968/1972 and did such great things with Winston Reilly on the latters "Technique" imprint.steve

It's definitely Winston's style, but what the hell, almost everybody copied either Wright's long notes, or Mittoo's percussive touch so, it could be anyone BUT jackie mittoo :P hahahaha
