9:10 Just wondering how can I modify the actual CONTENTS style? I hope my question makes sense 🙂. The TOC options allows you to style Heading levels. But how do I control the style of the title of the table of contents? Which usually by default is blue. I see in this video it's already modified as black and centred.
@JasonMorrell Жыл бұрын
The Table of Contents feature does not add a title by default, so you simply type it and style it. Also, if you click the launcher in the Styles gallery to display the Styles side pane, then change 'Recommended' to 'All Styles', you will discover styles called TOC1-9 and TOC Heading which you can modify. Check out this video for some interesting ideas... kzbin.info/www/bejne/mp3cgZlspM2KbJo

How do I save a multi-level list and the corresponding heading styles to be available to use in all documents? Also, do I need to format the TOC? It is formatting differently from the heading styles. Can I save a TOC style to use across multiple documents? Thank you again for your great videos!
@JasonMorrell3 жыл бұрын
Wow, a lot of questions in the mix here. The TOC has its own set of styles called TOC1, TOC2, TOC3 etc. You can find them if you click the launcher in the bottom-right corner of the Styles group, then change the option to display ALL styles if necessary. You can right-click and modify each style as required. Any style (TOC or regular) can be reused in other documents. You can copy styles from one document to another, or from a document to the Normal template which then makes them available to all future new documents. Best I point you to these videos (in particular, the second one): kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWqqZYqlepKKopI and kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqGohmywodKmitk

Thanks a lot for this informative video. Can you do one for citations and Bibliography as well? Like, in reports, when we have to make a list of references at the end. Also, a tutorial for footnotes would be helpful.

Thanks Abraham J. I'll add those to the list, although I have a pretty full schedule at the moment (having to pivot quickly and completely reinvent the way I run my training business in a matter of days, that kind of thing!) Check out officemastery.com/word-mastery if you want more of this kind of training. Cheers, Jason.

When making my TOC I checked to make sure "automatically update" is selected for all TOC headings. Even though it is selected, if I edit TOC 1 in the table it still does not automatically update any other TOC 1 further down. I'm not sure why this might be happening!
@JasonMorrell3 ай бұрын
Lydia, the problem with clicking into a TOC entry to position the cursor is that Word then hyperlinks you to the content in the document. Therefore you need to highlight at least one character before making a change to the font or paragraph settings. And by the time you've done that you may as well have gone to the Styles pane and modified the style directly from there - which is the method I would recommend anyway. I hope that helps.

I tried placing a shape behind the TOC and it didn't work. Alternatively, when i cut the TOC and pasted on top of the shape it worked. Can you share the reason why shapes don't go and sit behind the TOC using the Send to back option but works when I do it the other way round?
@JasonMorrell2 жыл бұрын
A couple of things to try. 1. Use the Wrap Text option (on the Picture Format ribbon) and choose Behind Text. 2. Double click in the header or footer, then insert the image, changer the Wrap Text option to Behind Text and reposition as necessary (you can move the image to anywhere on the page). Then double-click on the main page to return to the document. Let me know if that solves your problem. Jason,

Hi, not sure if you're still taking questions, but I have one: I'm trying to update someone's Table of Contents while they're tracking changes. When I update the ToC, my new section is not added. IS there a way to do this when tracking changes is activated? Thanks!
@JasonMorrell4 жыл бұрын
Hi Laurie. Thanks for your questions. Yes, I check comments daily. The table of contents works with the current content. So if somebody has made a change with the tracking on, the change will need to be accepted before it can be included in the table of contents. Does that make sense? Jason

Hare Krishna thanks for the wonderful explaination one problem i am facing is that the font style of navigation pane and the headings are not matching means its showing caps and small in the navigation or random caps and small how to resolve?
@JasonMorrell4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question Sarvesh. Here are some things to check. 1) It doesn't really matter what the nav pane looks like - it is used to display the skeleton structure of the doc and provide a way of quick navigation. 2) If the case of the headings in the main document are inconsistent, a) check the case of the actual text and press Shift F3 to toggle between upper case, lower case and title case. b) Click the launcher in the Font group (Home ribbon), and review the Small Caps and All Caps check boxes c) If you are using styles, right-click the style in the style gallery, then click Modify. In the dialog, click the Format button, then Font and again check the Small Caps and All Caps settings. 3) If the case of the Table of Contents is inconsistent, click the launcher in the bottom-right of the Styles gallery to display the Styles pane. Find the TOC1/2/3 styles and check their case settings. I hope that helps. Jason

Sarvesh, please send me a short sample of your document to support@trst.com.au and I'll take a closer look.
@JasonMorrell4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sarvesh, I found your message in the spam folder, maybe because you keep calling me Hare Krishna (a common spam trigger) instead of my real name, Jason! This is your problem. You originally entered the heading text in mixed case. You can see this clearly if you select, say, the 1.3 ERGONOMIC heading, and in the Font dialog, switch off the ALL CAPS setting. This is how you fix your problem. In the same way that you have modified the Heading 1/2/3 settings to switch on the ALL CAPS, you need to do the same with the TOC 1/2/3 styles. These latter styles are not displayed in the Style gallery by default. Therefore you must click the launcher in the bottom-right corner of the Styles gallery to display the Styles pane. Scroll through the styles until you find TOC 1/2/3. Right-click each TOC style and choose MODIFY. Then click the Format button in the bottom-left corner of the dialog, choose Font, then tick the ALL CAPS box. This was outlined in solution 3 of my original reply. I wish you all the best Sarvesh. Jason

I think the explanation is excellent, except for one thing, you speak a little fast. You should slow down a bit. I have seen several of your videos and the pace is similar

Point taken Alfredo. We were experimenting with adjusting the speed in the post-edit to up the energy a little. I agree, maybe too fast!

Bro, I like your videos, but your accent is difficult for Americans to understand when you speak so fast. Legit, I had to check my playback speed, lol. May I suggest you slow it down a bit in future vids? Other than that, I think your videos are extremely helpful and thorough. Great work man!
