Video said Guan Yu is good at making friends, reality is the exact opposite. There were so many records on his arrogance and insecurity. He saw himself as Liu Bei’s #1 man, only Zhang Fei could be his equal, and looked down on everyone else on his side. He’s so hostile towards his camp mates, they refused to send reinforcement, which caused his demise.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms greatly exaggerates the abilities of many figures from the era: 1. Guan Yu-He's basically deified by the novel and later by the ruling class due to the way he's portrayed in the novel as a paragon of Confucian virtues, but in history he hardly won any battles (at least what's been written about him) and was basically an arrogant prick whose arrogance cost him his life. Most of his deeds in the novel are entirely fictional. The flood at Fan Castle was due to the weather. 2. Zhao Yun-He's made out to be this awesome commander, but in history he hardly did anything significant and he only led troops by himself towards the end of his life, and it resulted in a retreat. He did save Liu Shan during the retreat at Changban, but he merely escorted him away from the battlefield, and historical records don't mention anyone trying to stop him. He did show some political and strategic insight after Liu Bei's conquest of Yi, and warned Liu Bei against attacking Sun Quan, but he did nothing noteworthy as a general. There is a text called "Yun Bie Zhuan" or the "Alternative Biography of Zhao Yun" which mentions him repelling a Wei attack using thousands of archers during the Battle of Han Shui which took place during the Hanzhong Campaign, but the text's reliability is questionable at best. 3. Xiahou Dun-He's made out to be a fighting general and Cao Cao's right-hand man, but in history he performed much better as an administrator rather than as a front-line commander. When he led troops by himself, let's say it didn't go very well. He was a warrior, but not a good commander. Towards the end of his life he was made General-in-Chief of Wei, but I think it was due to his seniority and administrative accomplishments rather than what he achieved as a general. 4. Zhuge Liang-He's made out to be another deity of war by RoTK, and I can't say he had no talent as a commander (he did manage to achieve some successes during his Northern Expeditions, including killing Zhang He), but he was nowhere near the seemingly invincible commander and strategist as he is portrayed in the novel. The weakness of Shu as a state also severely limited any chance it had at making a dent in Wei. Zhuge Liang was certainly an able minister and administrator, but he was often an arrogant and self-righteous individual who consolidated power in his own hands and tried to write history on his own terms. He abolished the position of court historian, and this is part of the reason why many of the Shu biographies in Records of the Three Kingdoms are much shorter than the biographies of figures from Wei and Wu. 5. Guan Xing and Zhang Bao-Zhang Bao died when he was very young, Guan Xing became a court official but also died young. In the novel (and in DW) they're depicted as generals inheriting the fierceness and legacies of their fathers. They swear an oath of brotherhood like their fathers did, but all of that is complete fiction. 6. Xu Shu-His only noteworthy deed in history was recommending Zhuge Liang. He achieved nothing of note in the Wei court either. In 234 AD, on Zhuge Liang's last Northern Expedition, he heard that Xu Shu and another one of their friends both held low ranks in Wei. Zhuge Liang remarked that Wei simply had too many talented advisers. I mean, seriously, the Shu roster is the biggest. I'm not advocating the removal of any characters, but instead of characters like the Guan and Zhang children, why not add a few guys who actually accomplished things? For example, Zhang Yi and Wang Ping? Jiang Wan and Fei Yi, perhaps? Even Liao Hua, because he was there from beginning till end. On the other hand, Wei is made out to be the "villain' faction in the novel and in earlier DW games (this is corrected in DW7 and 8), but many of the guys from Wei were the REAL DEAL in terms of actually performing deeds. Sure, the Records of the Three Kingdoms does have a Wei / Jin bias, the Wei bias coming from the fact that many of those figures were the fathers and grandfathers / great grandfathers of the Jin generals and officials, but it is undeniable that Wei DID have the most capable generals and officials and the largest pool of talent due to its size and strength. Wei generals such as Xiahou Yuan and Cao Ren are made out to be dumbasses in the novel, but in history they were capable generals who were trusted by Cao Cao to be area commanders. Xiahou Yuan led the subjugation of the northwest (Ma Teng / Ma Chao's territory), supervising generals such as Zhang He and Xu Huang. He was C-i-C of the entire northwestern front. Cao Ren was often entrusted to guard key strongholds such as Jiang Ling and Fan Castle, and although he eventually lost Jiang Ling, he managed to hold out for about a year, and personally rode to save his subordinate Niu Jin and the latter's soldiers when they were surrounded by the Wu forces led by Zhou Yu. In his earlier days he performed well in Cao Cao's conquest of Xu Province and at Guan Du.
@AbsoluteZero67146 жыл бұрын
Also worth mentioning is Yu Jin. He's mostly remembered for surrendering at Fan Castle because the novel makes a big deal out of it, but people often forget, or are completely unaware of the fact that he was an important general who aided Cao Cao in many key campaigns of his earlier days and achieved a fair share of successes. However, judging by his Records of the Three Kingdoms biography, his career seems to go downhill after Guan Du. Post-200 AD was also the rise of newer generals in Cao Cao's forces such as Zhang Liao, Zhang He, and even Xiahou Yuan's career really started taking him to places post-200 AD. Perhaps Cao Cao simply found better men to lead his forces? I'm not sure.

You forgot one thing about Sun Quan is that he was a good administrator but a rubbish general. Sun Quan was a very smart kid that often followed his dad, Sun Jian and brother, Sun Ce, around the Southlands even when Sun Jian was still serving under Yuan Shu. However once his father died, Sun Ce took the seat and expanded their family fortunes wildly while Sun Quan was still being an inquisitive genius and Lady Wu (mother of Wu aka "Wife of Sun Jian, mother of Ce, Quan and Ren, Ce and Quan's younger sister) kept him well educated thinking that he will only be taught about generalship when he's about 16. However, tragedy struck when Sun Ce was assassinated during a hunt and the young 16 year old Sun Quan stepped into the hot seat. Still, he had his knowledge to boot and that helped him control an unruly court of ministers who couldn't see eye to eye with generals who held equal power in the Wu court. That being said, without the proper teachings of the battlefields, every time he leads an army, they'll always lose the battle and that's why many ministers in fact reject his proposition when anytime he raises that he's gonna raise and army to defend or attack an area but instead ask the Grand Marshal of the army to do it for the state and that's why the Grand Marshal is just a rank lower than Sun Quan himself.
@MrLolx2u4 жыл бұрын
@kacangbumbu987 Zhou Tai wasn't Sun Quan's picking tho but Sun Ce. However, he entrusted alot of task to Zhou Tai too because officers like Huang Gai and others often praise Zhou Tai for his steadiness in chaotic situations and his prowess to lead forces in times of panic and often turning an unfavorable situation into a victory. But everything else, yes. Sun Quan do have a special talent in spotting extraordinary people with superb talents in leading or running a country be it in the civil side or military side. In fact even before Lu Xun took up the Military Commandership, he was nothing but a mere official that's just handling rations and welfare but soon, after Lu Meng pushed him further up the ladder, Sun Quan could see his talents and thus used him alot also. That's why many commanding stuff are all left down to the generals as Sun Quan himself knew he's weak when it comes to commanding an army but when it comes to stringing both sides of a warring faction in his government together and ensure everyone is loyal to the state of Dongwu while in the process finding great talents to fuel his destiny then yes, he does that VERY well.

Cao Cao was like the 50 Cent of his period. Not as much evil, as ambitious, proud and calculating. Which often led to him dissing people before they get the chance to diss him. One of the thing about RoTK is it’s so influential some of its characters are worshiped in local temples, even if some of them are fictional. I think the bigger picture also depicts why RoTK received so much fanfare. The Chinese calls themselves the Han, ceasing division between ancient states. Thus, it’s no surprise that the end of the Han dynasty is of so much importance.
@杨晨-i9b10 ай бұрын
Chen Shou, the history author, and Luo Guanzhong, the novel author, were both biased towards Shu. Two reasons are that Liu Bei was considered the legitimate heir of Han Dynasty, which is important for later rulers to prove their own legitimacy, and that Liu Bei historically did good to his people while Cao Cao massacred cities for hatred. Meanwhile, Guan Yu has been worshipped by literally all native religions (including Buddhism) and folk beliefs in China.

Learning what I have from this video and some comments it’s actually annoying that some of the more important characters still aren’t even playable in the game. And although I agree that the games could have portrayed history a little better, I can’t be upset that the characters and fictional stories are what they are as it’s really made the game what it is over the years. Fucking awesome to play! (Besides the absolute shit show that DW9 was anyway).
