it shouldn't be, it was a preliminary design, Dynetics explained they had weight mass issues but they had teams to solve this engineering problem, it was solvable. NASA used it against them and dropped it.

Amog the candidates, NASA is facing, this system is best from my view. It minds so many experiances from the Grumman-LEM-project in times of Apollo: not too high, the right hatch... And it`s a next step on the other hand, because it can be used in so many flexible directions... Low costs therefor, also facing `new cold wars`, but still being able to act.

This is so much simpler, reusable and revolutionary than the National Teams cobbled together behemoth. You could call this the "Mule" as it can take all kinds of pressurized cabin configurations to the moon surface; habitat, manned lander, supplies, rover, and on and on. Just launch the core modules on a super heavy like SLS (too expensive!) or Vulcan, Falcon 9 Heavy or SuperHeavy+Starship. The core of the lander is perfect for the beginnings of a lunar outpost. This thing rocks, but ULA will win through legal corruption. They always do. I suggest you very quietly make a plan B with Spacex.

Those who say it is heavy, this is not the actual design you see, the mass issue was in preliminary design review phase to NASA meaning Dynetics showed their problems and future solutions, Dynetics had plans to solve this problem to reduce mass. NASA used that against Dynetics.

Dianetics Alpaca lunar lander looks surprisingly like the Mars Sky Crane if you dump the central habitat module. Perhaps it could be used to deliver cargo like rovers or other supplies. If you remove landing gear and add the deployable tether cables you could lower cargo and have your rocket engines at an angle and not kick up as much regolith reducing the risk of damage to the cargo. After the cargo touches down and the tethers cut it can return to orbit for refueling and reuse
@JeffHoldenWS-NC
@JeffHoldenWS-NC 3 жыл бұрын
Dinetics descent module looks a lot like the Mars Sky Crane. They could get rid of the landing gear and deliver all sorts of non-human cargo like rovers to the Moon by lowering it on a tether then cutting it loose returning to the lunar gateway for refueling and connecting to the next cargo drop. Dropping cargo from a tether might also help prevent damage from regolith kicked up by landing engines.

IMHO, this is the best complement for Orion - uses existing technology, can't tip over, modular design that can also be used for other purposes, fuel can be launched alongside Orion, most of it can be reused, and is just cute. Full Starship is just overkill, and BO lander is not reusable at all.

wish instead of wordage - they actually had more than flash shots of the interior - instead having someone inside showing how much/little space there is when loaded and in spacesuits. This interests me and is little shown for vehicles as the actual space can be shockingly little (ie soviet capsule ). This is an interestingly simple ship with good reusablity that looks easily adaptable to land other small loads (like habitable rovers).

And it WONT tip over - humor not intended. Weight plays a BIG advantage to a successful landing. This vehicle is NOT top heavy. The weight is spread out. Lets be serious and consider a realistic, common sense vehicle in a lighter gravity. Things can still TIP over. The shape of the ALPACA guarentees a stable landing. Too many brains stirring the solutionm.

Can 2 ppl sleep, eat and do their business in that small room for several days? Where do they put water filtration systems, air recycling for several days for 2 astronauts? How do astronauts secure them self, maybe like in subway: stand and hold onto something like that curtain :). Proven 60's technology with small space for 2 ppl, 2 costumes and some space for rocks. Why not use core memory, it is proven it works? Can that thing carry a rover somewhere or they expect to use rovers left in the 70's on the Moon? Reusability: just this module is "reusable", what about the other way more expensive stuff like launch vehicles (hundreds of tons of materials thrown away for each launch, best case scenario 2/year). I want to see their estimation of time and cost for building a Lunar base - most likely in 100years and several world yearly budgets. That thing is a joke like BO's blue ball concept. If things continue like this, China and Russia will be on Mars and beyond before US get on the Moon.

Frankly, honestly Dynatics is probably the worst Lander of the three Landers chosen. Honestly, not be rude, this lander is unlikely to be used for Artemis, especially after Spacex was chosen. Maybe Blue origin could also be selected? But it's unlikely this lander is to be used even once. Honestly starship would be the cheapest, the most flexible, and will be able to carry the most payload. I think using this lander would be unnecessarily expensive per landing, compared to starship.
