For those who are curious: This is basically originally a de-rated Rolls Royce Merlin,- without the fancy light weight parts and centrifugal supercharger. It uses cast iron parts instead because it's a tank engine. In that aero configuration they needed 130 octane gasoline. E85 has a octane rating around 100-105, and also cools down the fuel/air mixture. Higher octane rating makes the air/fuel mixture more resistant to knocking. Condensation can actually form on the intake runners from the cooling effect. The negative property of ethanol is that it needs around 34% more fuel, so it has a different air/fuel ratio, and the ignition needs to be backed off by 5 degrees. It can also be hard on gaskets and hoses, and the engine crank case ventilation needs to be rerouted from exiting in to the intake manifold to a catch tank so the injectors doesn't get fouled up. Fortunately there is fuel injection systems like Megasquirt that can adjust the timing, boost pressure and amount of fuel based on the ethanol content in the fuel. Before high octane gasoline was available, the "Silver arrows" during the 1930's ran on a diet composed of 40% methyl alcohol, 32% benzene, 24% ethyl alcohol and 4% gasoline! This engine will easily generate around 4000 Newton meters of torque on the crankshaft according to my calculations.

@@hondarideralex You're talking about the Merlin, which powered the Spitfire, and that engine had a supercharger. This is the Meteor, the Merlin's tank version, which basically had the supercharger and propeller reduction gear removed.

@@MegaJani Correct but they put turbochargers back on it. just a different way of increasing the air density to make power. it should be capable of the same or more power potential as it did with the supercharger with turbos because there is no parasitic loss.

This has to be the best build going on in the internet right now . Hopefully everyone that watches it realizes how much work it takes to get this kind of engine up and running in a car designed to have only 1/4 of the cubic inch that the Rolls Royce engine is . Just barely touch the gas pedal and the results could be catastrophic to the cars transmission , rear differential , tires etc . I can't wait to see what it can do when it's out on an airstrip or a race track . These guys have their work cut out for them and I admire them .

Well the engine is made in aluminum and actually only weighs 600kg. The total dry weight of the car is around 2000kg, only 100kg more than the original. And the weight distribution is 52-48% 😃👍

It just occurred to me that this used to be a tank engine, and with that displacement, it won't rev very high. Seeing the Dyno rpm reminded me about this. It must be geared with a diesel transmission no? The conversion to modern ignition and fuel injection is awesome, I love the idea of seeing what an old beast can do with proper fuel and control.

We can rev the engine up to 3400 rpm. We use a planetary gear that revs up the rpm in the gearbox 2,77x. So 1000 rpm in the engine = 2770 rpm in the gearbox. The gearbox is a dragracing prepped TH400 😀👍

@@TheMeteorInterceptor Awesome, is the bellhousing the same as the Merlin? Rolls to Chevy adapter sounds fun. It must have been a journey to get a torque converter made for that too. May I ask what you're aiming for power wise? If it made 5-6 hundred stock detuned to run on whatever they could get for tank fuel, with 2 huge turbos at 27 liters you're probably looking at enough power to pull a train behind you if you wanted.

so on a hub dyno this would probably do 3000 ft lb torque , and about 1200 hp ?? these motors had 1700ft lbs of torque out of the factory, i guess later variants had 2000hp
