Nobody said it was over 600 wheel HP. It makes almost 615 HP at the battery and that is a true measured value we read directly from the battery. The issue with your dyno numbers is that Dynos are not meant to measure power or torque at very low speeds. That is why cars are typically dyno’d in 4th or 5th gear at much higher speeds. 500+ HP at low speeds is an extreme amount of torque and dynos can’t typically handle it. Plus they lose accuracy because the torque and accelerations are so severe at low speeds. There is no way a car with only 500 WHP is running 10.75 @ 127 mph in the 1/4 mile. Just plug that time and speed into any HP calculator and you will see that those specs require at least 600+ Wheel HP. The car absolutely makes 610+ HP at the battery and something like 550+ WHP when the battery is fully optimized. I know everyone wants to get dyno numbers for this car but it won’t be accurate because the single speed transmission in an EV makes typical dynos useless for measuring an EV. The Kia EV6 GT that is said to have 576 HP has that value at the battery. If you read the exact same metric for the new Model 3 Performance it will read 613 HP. Why does everyone believe the 576 HP value for the EV6 GT and not the 613 HP value for the Tesla?

My 2024 MYP "on paper" is 455-510 hp (with different websites claiming those numbers). Every time people ask me how much HP it has, I always say, "idk... all I know is it's fast as fuck, and the torque is crazy. " 😂
@Nisse977

Thanks for that! The thing with the new Performance model is that it continue to pull hard att higher speeds where the old model fell off. So maybe the peak HP-numbers are similar, but if we would put the charts from the new and old car ontop of each other, we would se bigger and bigger difference as the rpm/speed goes up. That is a good thing :) Thanks again!

You're right, most people who talk specs only talk in terms of peak power figures. Then they scratch their heads when a 500 hp car is slower than a 400 hp one. Where in reality the 500 one only makes that at a very narrow band of its rev range, and is below 400 through most of it.

yet more great content. Thanks much for doing this. Seems the big power difference between the 2024 Performance and earlier versions is not the absolute power, but the "area under the curve". As Tesla stated, the new motor is able to produce higher power far further up the rev range than the earlier motor. The performance testing definitely shows this to be the case, with substantially higher 1/4 mile trap speeds and substantially faster high speed acceleration. When comparing my former 2019 LRDM car to the Performance version of that car it was pretty clear that the Performance variant was only faster up to 60, and after that they were the same. My new 2024 Performance is not like that, and has substantially more high speed power than the 2019 car.

Everybody focus on dyno numbers I don’t care about dyno numbers. I don’t know the power of my 9’s Mustang. The most important figure to determine power/weight is trap speed. That doesn’t lie A 500whp narrow power band car will be slower than a 500 whp wide power band on the same weight. New model 3 has a wider powerband than the previous and that’s where the quicker acceleration comes from.

I've been enjoying my model 3 performance. When I was much younger I used to race a bit. And the most powerful car I drove was something around 700 horsepower, but that car was just pure violence. No power no power no power, power band violence for 2000 RPM, grab the next gear try to keep up. There is no doubt that car would be faster around most tracks than my model 3 Performance in the hands of a competent driver. But the Driving Experience is so much different. I can concentrate on proper breaking proper Apex proper exit, and really focus on those details that I would not have been able to do with that old Porsche. The Porsche was much more city of the pants driving, just trying to manage whatever heroic bad behavior was going on at the moment, with the model 3 I can really focus down on proper driving technique and for most people in most cases I believe it would be quite a bit quicker and a lot less likely to end up in a terrible crash.

Inertial dynos usually estimate the transmision looses, and provide engine power figures. If you can try to do that with an EV, as they have regenerative braking and no clutch, you will overestimate the looses and you will read at least 100 extra hp.
@Modikie

even if peak power is only incrementally improved, clearly the power is spread out to the top end because people notice how powerful the car pulls at higher speeds over the old one. that wouldnt be just a incremental power increase, thats a factor of the improved motor that can output more power for longer, at higher speeds while the old one peaks and drops off way sooner.

Torque is not that important for EVs, i wouldn't worry about it. Torque was only ever important when cars needed to get power early in the rev range. Once 8 speed gearboxes became the norm, it's just not that important for ICE cars either. Also high torque numbers usually come from turbo motors which have turbo lag, so factor all that together and torque ends up not being a useful parameter now.

@@EwanM11 Agree, especially for M3P, torque is not a concern. It gets off the line great and traction is not an issue. Main thing that needed improvement was the prior model would taper off above 60mph or so - the new rear motor and slight HP bump have helped in that regard.

Yes there are differences in dyno's. But didn't the gen1 M3P receive a 5% boost on two separate occasions? You cited one, and this could account for some difference in the older dyno number in the high 400's you were citing vs what some others have measured at a little over 500 peak HP. Also, an important distinction between the old and new is not just the peak power, but the spread over which it makes consistently higher power. The newer gen motors are more efficient and holder higher hp over a broader wheel speed. So the old M3P might measure as high as 523hp on one dyno up to a certain speed, but then it trails off until it settles around 400hp, whereas the newer model has a higher peak HP and then settles to a lower hp as speed increases, but the lower rating is obviously higher than the old gen motors. I don't know if that makes sense, but I'm guessing on a like for like dyno, where the old M3P was measuring over 500HP at the peak and closer to 400HP at higher speeds, the new one would measure somewhere north of 600HP and settle in the high 400's at higher speeds.
