DYS Mi200 Review

The DYS Mi200 VTx seemed decent for the price. I like the switchable 25mW and 200mW outputs, the SMA extension, and a few other features. But overall I hate that it's powered by 5v. I think thats a horrible idea, creates a lot of heat, and limits you part selection since you will need a pretty beafy 5v regulator to power everything.

If anyone is curious, I did run the RF test on it with the Omnibus (1.5a), DYS F4 (3.0a), and the PDB (2.0a). All test were the same. It output just over 30mW on all three. I also disconnected everything else including camera to be sure it had enough power. So current supply doesn't seem to be the problem. Sounds like a hardware problem or poor quality control. Edit: I also want to add that many of guys have had great results with this VTx. I dont want to give it a bad name. Just realize QC is different from manufacturer to manufacturer and different batches will perform different.

could it be voltage? I know some cameras with a wide voltage range won't work at anything less than 5v. but the 5v on the fc might really be closer to 4.5v(perhaps less) after diodes and filtering and my omnibus f4v2 can't power on my foxeer hs1177 so I must use battery power. not that it would improve your review but could you connect it to an adjustable power supply and increase the voltage and check for changing results?

I run the Flip32 F4 V3 (new regulator version) and have my runcam and TBS Unify 5v running off of it and no issues on both quads. Is the v3 just better and more able?

Thanks for the review. The cheap VTX to try is the eachine VTX03, I run it from the 5V output on the betaflight f3 board and I use the 5V it kicks out to power my camera. I direct soldered a pigtail to it (you plug one in to the mini UFL connector if you prefer) so I can use an aomway cloverleaf antennae and I run it at its highest power level 200mW. It's super lightweight, excellent video quality and dirt cheap.

+Project Blue Falcon no worries, I got the info for direct soldering to the VTX from your videos 😃. If I was to do another one I would probably try using the mini UFL connector but solder it in place like Joshua Bardwell showed in a recent video to see how that works.

Project Blue Falcon i was trying to reply to john but youtube only lets me report him...lol...i use the same vtx but i do your antenna mod and i have done the button mod on one. i had one on a micro and In 30 sec of a 5min flight i got stuck in a tree about 4 foot up (thats where i think i lost the antenna but could of lost it before that) i get it out the tree and walk back to the bench where i sitting on and never even looked for any damage...then i FLY i noticed i very slight video noise not enough to stop flying...when i land by accident i see the antenna is MISSING 😲! so if you get one shrink rap the antenna plug it gets to hot for the hot glue in my opinion,unless you remove the plug and direct solder...the vtx might of been damaged on that flight but im not seeing it😆 so i ordered three more... i dont know a lot about all VTXs but this one to me is well worth the money ...you can not only fly it with a clothes hanger but it flys with NO antenna. ..lol

Hey JC I was wondering if you could tell me what part of the run cam swift goes bad when all you get is a black screen. I know it's the camera because I swapped it with another one and it works , so I know my wiring s good. I have the omnibus f4 with osd. I see my osd but no video. Is there a fix or do I have to buy a new one. Like you I'm on a budget . So anything will help. Thanks man.

I have one of these and wasn't getting a good signal. Turned out that the channel/band selection were WAY off. I set it for E4 and did a scan with my True-D Diversity receiver and E4 wasn't even one of the top 3 signals. Ended up running it on C5 or F2 while the VTX was still set on E4. Really messed up.

I haven't tested the power output on mine, so don't know if its putting out 25mW or 800mW instead of 200. But that said. I haven't had any issues with it so far. I have it being powered off the DYS F4 with no issue as well as powering my runcam micro swift off the board as well. Nothing gets too hot either.. My Mi200 is not the pigtail version though. Yeah I have 2 and they're great. I flew a mile away down the beach and signal was crystal. Maybe he got one of a new batch and they tried to "fix" the 800mw "problem" and ended up making it suck

I personally thought it's quite a nice little VTX! You may have a dud.. I hooked up to flycolor tower S and runcam micro, seem to worked very well. I believe mine is the APRIL batch. Left it on the bench @ '200mw' (which some say is 800) for more than 30 mins and video was perfect, no overheating etc.. only thing is that I can't seem to figure out how to control this VTX remotely.

I have the Amrmattan version of this and it's been the best VTX I have owned. Maybe it's a bad unit? Or maybe Armattan does something to make it better. Maybe try theirs out?

Mine also is one that outputs 800mw (actually bought 3 just for this reason) and no pigtail, no problems whatsoever, it's actually the best vtx I've had, though I've only been using one for a month or so, maybe my other two are dud's I'll find out on my next build..

Gotta add my $0.02 ... I love mine. Switched all my quads over (8). All running same channel w a clearview racing receiver ground station set up. Plug and fly...zero issues and great signal (clearview is the bees knees!!). Thinking you got a bad one. At $13 ea...I think there will be some bad apples...speaking of which, I sell apple comps, and know for certain that even apple has QC / design flaws...so happens to even the "best" of them.

that's pretty weird, since other video shown this actually output 600mw at 200 setting and i used it for like half year and have 2 of these, works pretty good for me and not much heat weird

I had 2 of them, both I tested between 750 -930 mW. Depending on channel, one would switch channels mid flight even with the 2 leads shorted, the other shuts off mid flight, then comes back on. Total fail, was hoping for a cheap answer to the UNIFY. Mine we're junk

I got two from different source, they both have the problem that automatically switch the channel with vibration. It is horrible.

I run the Eachine Vtx01 on all my quads. Matched with the Dys F4 it's perfect. You can run everything on 5v with the 3 amp reg. Foxeer arrow, Fs82 or X6B Rx and Eachine Vtx01.

actually, just wanna say I love your channel but I don't think a video saying essentially 'i got a dodgy vtx' helps anyone. I've had a long list of DOA items both premium and budget. if you google any product you'll find plenty of people with issues. Your channel used to be about things you really liked, and technical stuff, this is neither. I think if you wanted to find if a product really had issues, you'd have to test more than one, otherwise as a viewer you've told me nothing. Again, this isn't a hate message, I love this channel and your honesty, and I hope u see where I'm coming from.

That vtx is literally a nightmare. I got it and was powering it from my f4 flight controller and it had horrible signal when set on 25mw and when i set it to 200mw, it kept resetting my f4 mid-flight which is SUPER dangerous. It was a waste of time and money. I upgraded to the rmrc cricket v2 and i now know how it feels to have a quality vtx!

I have this VTX and also had problems out of the box. Powering it straight from the 5v reg on a beta flight f3 board, my runcam swift mini would only work on 25mw mode. Got the same weird lines that you did on your second swift at 200mw. My workaround was to power the camera straight from battery voltage and now it works really well in 200mw mode. Also serge at piro flip has a review up for this he tested the power output and low was like 15mw and high over 800mw!!! Talk about crap qc...

That is the only VTX I use and never has a problem with any of them and when I tested one of them it was almost putting out 400mw. Also I have used them with Runcams and Caddx cams. I think you just got a bad VTX really you should have tested another one before you give a bad revue on a good product.

You are spot on with the bad quality and bad QC. Imho, dys is overpriced junk. However, I do have 2 very important questions to ask you. Number 1 being, if you don't recommend this Vtx, what vtx would you recommend? The second question (with equal importance) is what kind of beer are you drinking? Michelob Ultra for me : ). it sounds like the VTX is pulling more than 500mA because 500mA = 1/2 Amp

Project blue falcon you definitely got a defective unit I have 4 of them 2 without sma extension and 2 with and all 4 of mine work fantastic I wouldn't recommend for racers as mine are putting out over 800mw on the 200mw setting but I fly by myself so not an issue I actually get better range with this than my Tbs unify hv

i purchased this, hooked it up to my build which just so happened to have a separate pdb with a 5v reg and was told (after calling the company i purchased it from) that they use a similar pdb with exact same specs and they have a pigtail going to their vtx and a pigtail going to their fc because their fc required 5v as well, and they had no problems. My situation was much worse. similar to your outcome JC, the pdb got so hot, so fast you couldnt touch it. i mean within 45sec you couldnt touch the pdb it was that hot. the only way i could use this product was to use one of these quadrysteria.com/products/361 that i had sitting around. its a seperate 5v/12v UBEC. i tried several different PDBs and never had this issue in the past with other products. i will use it till it breaks, but as you stated there is no trust there at all, and for the 13/14$ price tag id rather spend 30$ and trust my equipment. depressing ....

That VTx is probably made in a part of northern China where they could really use the heat, so it goes unnoticed by QC- They likely fail the ones that DON'T produce lots of heat!!! ;)

It sucks that you've had such a negative experience with this vtx because the original vtx from DYS is soooo freekin good. Please order a real one from a US based, legit retailer and you'll almost definitely change your mind. Running one on my recent hyperlite build off a dys f4 and it's sending 5v to my monster V2 w/o any issues.

All your problems are because you're trying to power your camera from the 5V pass through on the VTX. You can't do this!!! I don't know why people think they can do this. By the time the VTX draws the current it needs the voltage output will be WAY below 5V and it will NOT power a camera properly. These are the only VTx all of us racers run around here now. I personally run dozens of these because they're cheap and work perfectly! But don't think for a second you can power a camera off it, just like you can't off any other 5V INPUT VTx on the market... you need 12v in or VCC in and 5V or more out in order to have the headroom to deal with the resistance of the circuit. Reason it worked better for you with 3A BEC is because it's voltage stability will be slightly higher under load, but still not enough for a camera. I'm disappointed that you didn't simply take your multimeter and test the voltage out of the VTx. You'd see right away it's less than 5V and won't power a camera reliably causing your video issues.

Project Blue Falcon oh okay, I was just assuming you did as you talked about it at the beginning of the video. I apologize. Ya you may have gotten a dud. Our group used to only run Tramps and Unifys, but we've all since switched to these about 6 months ago because they're $10ea and we go through vtx's like candy. That way when you destroy one it's laughable rather than sucking destroying a $50 VTx. They work great and have great range. I've gotten over the OSD channel change/power selection feature loss for the price. On the same note I've also switched over to using 1177's direct from China that I've sourced for $18ea rather than swifts for $40ea for the same camera/case/accessories. :) some of my test quads have the camera so far exposed that they explode the cases and sometimes pcb's on bad gate hits/crashes.

True Story Jc.I bought into the 800 milliwatt hipe months ago, got the first batch hooked it to a clone maytec 5 &1 pdb + Naze32rev6 Clone!lol.Yes I used the pass-through..I went for a quick test punch-out in my ft yard. Now bear in mind I live around all cops including a retired azzHole*chief. I play with drones, so automatically im considered a peeping Tom. Never mind the fact all their wives look like dog Shit. The little 130mm death-Roll brownout, at 300ft, and crashed in the Chiefs driveway.Smfh..so I get in my car drive over there and it turned into a freaking nightmare!!. Thanks Dys!.lol ..
