Dyscourse is one of the those games where a normal person ends up in an extreme situation, tries to make the best choices they can, and then everybody dies. So let's join Rita on a deserted island, as we desperately try to keep some folks alive...

Seriously, don't take survival tips from Jon. Boiled seawater is hot salty water - you need to find FRESH water, and boil that before drinking (also be careful of leeches).
@ManyATrueNerd
@ManyATrueNerd 8 жыл бұрын
+Keagan Wyatt For once I'm not wrong, I'm certain - you just need to improvise a distillation set-up - boil it, catch the steam and run that off into a second vessel - salt is leftin boiled pan 1, the collected condensed steam is pure and fit to drink.
@bloodied_reaper1510

+Many A True Nerd Yup, Jon is correct here. So long as the steam is put into a second vessel, (and allowed to condense) it IS drinkable.

+Many A True Nerd This it true 100% it's just the wording is a bit off, that would be distilling water and not boiling it. But if you can find the right equipment or can figure out a way to make it work you CAN distill seawater into drinkable water, It'll just take a LOT of time.

Okay jon, half remembered SAS survival guide tips here: water is your biggest priority even on an island like this because boiling seawater is time consuming and resource intensive. Sure, it can be done if you set up the right kit on your fire, but we're talking like drops of water, slow. Now, for 6 people, finding a freshwater supply is really handy since it means any condoms you guys have can be used as makeshift bottles- condoms are really good at preventing fluid transfer and spermicide does work on other pathogens somewhat, so you'd have slightly clean water. You still need to boil your water to make it safe to drink, but at least you don't need to bloody distill out it from salt.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't getting fresh water from sea water require you to have a container to hold the salt water, a lid and another container to catch the fresh steam? You only have a frying pan.

+Jeffrey Abarca Because simply telling people to boil the seawater is more dangerous than saying it's okay to drink straight away. Boiling the seawater without some means of distillation or filtration will actually increase the saline concentration, which is what makes seawater deadly in the first place.
@Civmonopolis
@Civmonopolis 8 жыл бұрын
Boiling isn't enough Jon. You need some way to catch the evaporated water into a separate container. Otherwise, you will just get hot salty water and eventually just the salt.

I gotta say, you can't just boil seawater and drink it, you have to find a clear sheet of plastic (or something similar) and let the water evaporate and collect on the plastic then find a way to get it to drip into a cup or bowl, since the salt will just stay in the container if you boil it
@NorbertCsecs
@NorbertCsecs 8 жыл бұрын
Since when is boiled seawater drinking water?
@bizatin
@bizatin 8 жыл бұрын
+MrZederikus You don't just boil it. You take another piece of material and put it over the boiling water so that the condensation from the steam drips down into another container leaving the salt behind.
@NorbertCsecs
@NorbertCsecs 8 жыл бұрын
+Bizatin Yeah, that will give you distilled water which actually makes you lose useful minerals from your body, because the water that goes out merges with them. That distilled water is water and only water, it will make you need to eat more mineral rich things, like things that contain iron or potassium etc etc. And with less minerals in your body, in a survival situation, you will get weaker, which might mean death. Thats why they had to search for fresh water, because it contains stuff that distilled water doesnt, but to be fair, distilled water is a good short-term solution.

MrZederikus Yeah, that's true. I was merely explaining how you would get drinkable water from salt water. It appears you've got a better handle on the specifics than I thought based on your initial comment.
@georgelaidlaw3748
@georgelaidlaw3748 8 жыл бұрын
+MrZederikus Not really correct. You lose sodium through sweat and this, in most survival situations, is going to be the primary cause of any electrolyte imbalance that is immediately life-threatening and worth worrying about. If you're experiencing that kind of electrolyte imbalance, then you are probably standing in the middle of a hot desert or other very arid climate so any source of water should be your priority as well as any form of shelter to avoid the heat. You are correct that in cases of strenuous exhertion low sodium levels can be caused by overhydrating in an inappropriate manner. Most commonly this is seen with inexperienced or ill-prepared runners in marathons or even longer distance events who keep hydrated using normal mineral water rather than a properly prepared sports drink or rehydration solution. Again though the problem is more due to a loss of sodium that is not replaced rather than a dilution of the blood lowering sodium concentration. That is only seen in water drinking contests and you're probably not going not going to be participating in one of those in a survival situation.

Jon mate, boiling sea water isn't good enough unless you have the capability of collecting and condensing the steam from it. Boiling the water kills off any nasty bacteria but doesn't remove the salt from it. You need to distill the water in order to get fresh water from salt water which is much more complicated when you have virtually nothing to work with.
