I’m 50 I was diagnosed in the early 70s my parents at the time with other parents with there children also dyslexic were in a fight with the school board back then they went to the media there was a teacher from the university in Sudbury Ontario who saw this on tv she contacted my parents she herself had dyslexia she knew how to teach children with dyslexia so she became my teacher I was taught in a different way how to read and write it took 4 years to correct I do not agree with anyone or any school saying dyslexia is a disability no it’s not it’s a different way of learning and can be corrected that mentality needs to change I can’t believe this is still looked at in this way wow I suggest to anyone who is a teacher or a parent of a dyslexic child to read the book The gift of dyslexia. It’s not a disability

Hi Lisa, thank you for you comment. Yes I agree with you, I would recommend all of Ron Davis books to anyone wanting to understand dyslexia or any other learning difficulty (see book info in description).

I can focus, I lack the short term memory to know what Im suppose to be doing. In highschool they took away the leasons and started shoving text books at us and the teacher would do their own thing.

Hi Fathom, from the point of view of our minds, focus and short term memory are linked together or connected, they are not two separate things. I think if you contacted a facilitator nearest to you and asked them how the Davis method could help you with the difficulties you are have, I think you would find it helpful.

Thank you, Carl, for this thoughtful explanation of what struggling learners need to be successful in the academic realm, and thus in all of life's ventures. This is a helpful and concrete introduction to the ways that Davis programs can provide support for those seeking new tools to improve their learning pursuits. ~Melissa Norgren

Very interesting and well-presented, Carl. Thank you. I'd love to see more, like how you actually teach people to focus.

Hi Jeremy and thank you. The focus technique, how someone can get focused, and what makes them lose their focus is what the Davis program is all about. I cannot show the technique in a video online for several reasons. Ronald Davis does explain the method in his book, The Gift of Dyslexia. I think you could get a copy at your library or Amazon.

How do you recommend learning order of importance? As the order of importance seems to be involved with every aspect of life, how do you recommend not get overwhelmed and burned out when trying to use the order of importance.

There is a Davis program aimed at the problems that arise from not understanding order vs. disorder. If you go to the main Davis website, on the site go to 'find a provider' there you will be able to find the facilitator closest to you. You can talk to them about this video, and they with be able to help you. The main Davis website is: www.dyslexia.com
