I looked at this video once and was able to immediately get to the bottom of a new "burning plastic" smell in our 2 year old, rarely used Dyson vacuum. Very grateful for the detailed explanation here. It undoubtedly saved me a $200 repair bill and provided incentive to clean the vacuum once/month to prevent this situation from ever occurring again. So many thanks for sharing this information. Dyson needs to address the design flaw!

Pulled apart this dyson head last night after noticing the burning smell and found the same issue, and decided to venture to KZbin to find various videos like this. What a frustrating design flaw! I'm so disappointed. Thank you for your video.

Thank you for this video! I was worried my vacuum was completely shot. However, I stumbled upon this video and this is exactly what the issue was.

Thank you for this video. The smell from my vacuum was driving me crazy. I wasn't vacuuming as much as i wanted just because it would stink up the house. Took it apart and this was exactly the problem. Cleaned it and now no smell. I'll just have to do it periodically which I'm ok with as long as it doesn't stink. Thanks again!

Oh good googity-moogity, when you said design flaw, you weren’t exaggerating one bit! I wish I had seen this video before I disassembled the entire Dyson! I finally followed the wretched burning hair smell to the brush rollers, which I take great joy in cleaning any & all visible hair from nearly every time I vacuum, but I found out that was to no avail. It was the hair you couldn’t see… the hair that shouldn’t be able to get where it did that was the problem! What I found on this $700 piece of crap was a hair plug so gross & burnt that I couldn’t yank it free with tweezers & extremely sharp, pointed precision scissors, or even cuticle nippers working in unison with tiny needle nosed pliers. I had to use a professional dental scaler & a Waterpik with HOT water, and on the highest setting to get the carbonized, felted hair out of the bearings! Alas, I think the Waterpik flung a good bit of overspray into the brush motor. So I have the motor drying out inside the Viking oven on pilot. Hopefully, once it’s completely dry I can test it without frying the motor. But you know what?… I’ve already gone out tonight and bought the prettiest, most expensive Shark vacuum model, which is STILL only half the price of the damned Dyson, because this Dyson has pissed me off to the point where I don’t really care if I plug it in and it looks like Frankenstein’s monster getting 300 million volts to the bolts! It can melt for all I care… I’ll never get the rank burnt hair smell all the way out anyway. Damn thing made my house STINK!

LOL - okay you’re not wrong… I’ll never buy another Dyson new again after doing the same thing and realizing Shark makes a TANK of a vacuum.

@@PanhandlerT I agree with you on not buying a Dyson. Our experience with one of the early Shark steamer products was awful, hopefully the later products are good.

Your video made the cleaning process so easy. Once I removed the Torx screw from the drive cog, I couldn't pull the cog off by hand. A paint can opener was the perfect tool to pry it loose and also remove the hair from this area. Hugh Mongo

Thanks for the video! I assumed something was wrong with the ball portion but after seeing this I pulled apart our bearing housing. Removed the motor and all - the bearing was gummed up even though we keep the brushes fairly clean. Two people in the house with long hair does the same damage as a pet! Likely need to replace the bearing now as the plastic retention ring has started melting / fusing with the hair. Again big thanks for the vid. I would have been hunting for a while trying to figure this out instead of only taking 20 mins!

Yeah as someone who really appreciates great engineering, I was inspired by the original founder's story. I am saddened that Dyson, now like seemingly every other company, has been owned by private equity for a while now. I don't expect anything but this from them from now on.

Thank you sir. I think i have a different or possibly updated brush head than you but i smelled burning hair. And yes! I have a bushy Australian Shepherd so i feel there's probably a lot of people who experience this. Thanks for putting this out there for us!

What's the tool you used to get the bearing part off? I have the right head for my screwdriver but it's tapered and won't fit in the hole all the way. About 1/"4 short of grabbing the screw. Thanks in advance.

The drive cog screw is smaller than a torx 10. the 10 is just every so slightly too big so it must be a torx 9. I am pretty sure an 8 would be too small. I ordered a set of the 1 through 10 sized bits so I can confirm.

So Harbor Freight had a Torx head that works for my socket driver, but it says it's a T10 - fits fine. I have a separate set of Torx heads and the one that fit from that set is the T5. So it seems like it just depends on your set of T heads lol.

There is a screw down in the drive cog. If you removed that, then yes, it should just pull off.

The electric motor in the power head crapped out on mine after less than 6 months and parts such as a new power head are currently unobtanium from Dyson or anyone else. I will not be buying Dyson products ever again.

And Dyson is owned by private equity and I seriously don't think they care what customers are saying. They are just trying to extract as much money from it before it implodes. Sad to see this fate from such a great founder story.
