Also when Owen writes about "children ardent for some desperate glory" this contrasts his description of the soldiers at the start of the stanza as "old beggars", this shows that war is destructive to the youth and youthfulness in general.

Also, when referencing "My friend", he could be referencing the dying soldier. This could be a reflection of all the experiences which the soldier has lost, not only the death of the soldier.

Probably sadness, shock, and maybe even anger, because he exposed the lie of the romanticised version of war and showed everyone just how violent and hellish it really was.

Hmm, this is a tricky question as realistically the choice of lens or theory should be yours to make, based on which ones you know and are comfortable with. A psychoanalytic lens, or reading this poem through trauma theory, might be worth doing!
