Dzongsar Khyentse; Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo

At the center is Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo with the right hand extended across the knee, palm up, holding a vajra scepter and the stem of a flower blossom supporting a vase. The left hand is in the lap cradling a bell while holding the stem of a flower blossom rising above the left shoulder supporting a sword and book. Attired in the garb of a fully ordained monk, he wears a pandita hat with three rings representing the accomplishment of having learned all of the three components of the Buddhist Tripitaka.

Do you know who started this style of halos as in the painting of Jamyang Khyentse in HAR item no. 57082 where the center is an earthy pink and the outer part of the halo is green? This specific stylistic feature only appears as far as I can tell in late 19th to 20th century Kharma Gardri style paintings and this pinkish color to the center halos matches the color in parts of the sky. Lately a number of recent ca. 1950 thangkas all painted like this have come on the market and the quality of the paintings are very high only a handful of living artists can paint this well. I wonder if this artist is known or are these the work of a specific school?

This manner of depicting halos comes from the Khyenri tradition of Tibetan art. It can be seen in Central Tibet in the 16th and 17th century.

@@jeffwatt5114 That's interesting, I acquired a ca. 1900 Karma Gardri style thangka of Asanga from a set of the 6 Ornaments with this sort of halo, I've found most of the paintings from this set in different auctions, let me know I can upload all of the images for you if you like. Or you may have seen most of this set already sold in past Sworders and Lyon & Turnbull auctions in the UK.
