When we set out to do this crazy projects we thought we wanted to try some really new things. As anyone knows that follows us regularly, our first and foremost goal is remembrance - to shine a light on our past and learn form our ancestors' mistakes and achievements. We try our best to do that with a dedication to facts and details liberated from partisan, or ideological historiography. For this purpose, the attack on Pearl Harbor serves very well. It is a compact event over only a few hours that is spectacular in its nature, tragic in its effect, gripping in its drama, and has tremendous impact on WW2 on all fronts. It is also an event that is often simplified to the point of misunderstanding, has been woven into national mythology, and given rise to some pretty nutty conspiracy myths. Simply put: the Attack on Pearl Harbor is short enough, exciting enough, and misunderstood enough for us to do a limited series like this. But more than that we also wanted to try some new technical and narrative things. Since we started doing historical documentaries with the Great War in 2014 we have tried to be on the forefront of pioneering new ways of creating historiography for the modern media world. Narratively, we have dedicated ourselves to chronologies, which in historiography is nothing new, but it is new in the world of film documentaries (at least to the level we do it) - so we thought; "heck what if we go down to minute by minute for this" - well we did and it taught us an enormous amount about Pearl Harbor, but also about how we can write. We will get back to that in further comment on the series. As for technology, it truly is technology that enables our work, well any media - for us it is social media, affordable ways to capture film, global virtual remote working spaces, digital research opportunities, digital film archives, and so on. Two areas we had not been able to venture into was recreation of scenes using computer graphics and colorization of moving images. Using a gaming engine to create animation is also nothing new, but usually very, very expensive because you have to first create the world, the assets and the characters for your recreation. But for Pearl Harbor, World of Warships worldofwarships.com and World of Warplanes worldofwarplanes.com opened an opportunity to do this on a new scale at a cost that is only a fraction of what it usually costs. Along the way we also got to know Ricks Film Restorations ( bit.ly/ricksfilmresorations and kzbin.info ) who use AI technology to enhance and colorize film footage. While both of these technologies are only at the beginning of their potential, we think the results are spectacular. More than anything it has enabled us to enhance the emotional and visual experience for this series to a level we never reached before. Last but not least it enabled us to use the financial contributions of the TimeGhost Army, and World of Warships to create five hours of content for less than 1/50th - only 2%- of what it would cost to do with traditional means. creatingstuff In the Name of the entire TimeGhost Team, Astrid, Indy, Spartacus, and Wieke *Episode Guide:* This is a 10 episode limited series within our weekly coverage of WW2 - to see the immediate events leading up to this day watch episode 119 from December 5, kzbin.info/www/bejne/eoq4q6B4qr1gbLs. Some of the events covered briefly as they start on this day, such as the invasions in the West Pacific will be covered in more detail in the coming weeks, especially in episode 120K (the 11th episode this week).coming out on December 12. The beginning brought back one of the funniest stories from my early life. When a group of friends, along with my wife and I were playing Trivia Pursuit right after it was released, my wife was given the question asking when Pearl Harbor was attacked. She answered December 8th. We all fell out laughing at her because she did not know such an easy answer. She was very confused and said we were wrong. You see, my wife is Japanese and was always taught it was December 8th. So we decided to make a 'pen and ink change' to that card. We still have the original Trivia Pursuit game with that card.

I am always intrigued about what a Native Japanese citizen, that are born & raised in Japan, thoughts on the Japanese War & of course the Nuclear Weapons that were used on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima & Nagasaki... I would imagine that she's very emotional about it sense she most likely lost family members & family friends when the Nuclear Bombs were dropped on those two cities...*

I have been reading WW2 history for about 50 years (my father and three uncles served during the war) and this is the first time I have heard anyone bring up the question of "was it really necessary for the Japanese to have attacked Pearl Harbor). You make a great case for the idea that it was not necessary - that the Japanese (and especially Yamamoto) jumped to a conclusion without analyzing the facts. It boggles the mind to think of how that would have changed WW2 had they not attacked. You guys have done an incredible job right there by airing that issue. Wow.
@bingobongo1615

Yeah its an enticing idea. The easiest way out was Japan surrendering to American demands but that was out of the question. Japan’s army was too radical, the government too weak and the US demands to humiliating. The more interesting what if was definitely the what if Japan attacked the Dutch colonies directly not attacking the US. Rosevelt and Stimson definitely wanted to go to war and would have tried using this as a reason but the American public would have been very difficult to rally for a fight for Indochina.
@warwickeng5491
@warwickeng5491 3 жыл бұрын
Given how isolationist the US was at the time, I can't see the US getting involved had they attacked the European colonies, at least in the short term. It's bewildering how the top brass of the Japanese military didn't think of this, I guess it's what happens when someone's judgement becomes too shrouded in jingoism.

@@jiyushugi1085 The rivalry between IJA and IJN is nothing new. However, the IJN had the upper hand by having the "Hokushinron" (Northern Expansion Doctrine) proposal shot down (which was favoured by the IJA, a plan that would've opened up a second front in the USSR in co-ordination with Operation Barbarossa). Instead, what we saw in our timeline was the Nanshinron (Southern Expansion Doctrine) because of the vast resources that can be found in SE Asia, instead of incursion into the barren wasteland that was Siberia and central Asia (imagine if Germany had supply issues in their front, what kind of shortages the IJA would've faced in their invasion of the USSR?). So, technically, the IJN had little to envy as their preferred doctrine was adopted. This is also why Japan was able to have a non-aggression pact with the USSR (signed 04/1941). The USSR was also in favour of this, in order to prevent the opening of a second front, which eventually allowed them to re-deploy their troops in the far east to the European front. Without this pact, Nanshinron would have been impossible.

Warwick EnG Isolationist? Not sure about that. The Lend-Lease was almost unique in its extremely friendly conditions for the Soviets and GB and American destroyers protected British shippings. Also as Indy said around mid 1941 already popular opinion shifted towards intervention against Nazi Germany at least.

Here's something even more out of sense. This series are telling us that, after spotting that submarine before the attack, and the Indochina confrontations between USA and Japan, none was alerted in the Pearl Harbor base, so that Kermit Tyler assumed that the Oahu US radar signal that picked up the Japanese planes coming were B-17-s. Would a 5 years old child will believe that? Check the entire WW2 story : kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqCtgnyrhbd9qLc

I was 7 yo, living in Arizona copper mining town . The whole town went ino shock, anger, and extreme / profound grief. As a kid I did not fully comprehend but sensed something horrible had happend. I remember people saying "... they sank the Arizona....our boys...." My uncle was drafted into the Army and days from "shipping out". One day while in formation, he was pulled out and sent home. He explained that the orders were about America needing experienced copper miners more than soldiers at the time. We Mexican-American are very proud of our military and have many high medal heroes in our history.... we are quiet patriots.... VIVA AMERICA!

@Abu Dabu Well, you still have a long way to go to adulthood if you haven't noticed yet that "truth" doesn't exist. There is a thing called "reality", and then there are hundreds of "truths", which are simply different angles to look at the same thing. Which is why little helpers, like okhams razer, exist. You for one didn't even managed to sit still and pick up everything that was said in this short video to make your own little list of truths faithful. So your truth is worthless to me ...

@@WERob-to5sp Then they would’ve had to withdraw from China cause they likely wouldn’t have enough resources to conduct both wars. And what would they gain from attacking the Soviets? One port city and the Siberian wild? Not really worth it or very practical. Also the Soviets already had an army on the Manchuria border incase they go to war, at least until some time in 1941 I believe.

Helpful reminders and creative links that keep the information and time-lines rolling all wrapped up in your almost mid-Atlantic style accent. Its like listening to a ball-game in the 40's on the radio, but we actually get to see it unfold. Its great and refreshing. Its no "Japan bad. USA good" We get to see the actual people and their motivations and goals. Their ambitions and personalities. Its something I especially liked with the Reich. Stuff like, that the Wehrmacht refused to do the killing for the SS. The soldiers of the wehrmacht were literally just people. great Grandparents were in that army. They didnt believe in the ideology, but in the eyes of the World every german soldier was equally as brutal and horrible.

Had the Japanese stayed away from the US (and by extension, the Philippines) and gone after the rest of SE Asia, it is likely that the US would have let them have their way for years, thus allowing Japan to become more powerful. Even after Pearl Harbor, it took many months for the US to build up it's forces. For Congress to approve all of those funds with no direct attack on American soil, it would have taken much longer.
@iKvetch558
@iKvetch558 3 жыл бұрын
Well...the 2 ocean Navy appropriations and the money to vastly expand the air corps and the army both came before December 1941, so the Japanese were already on a time limit due to the 12 aircraft carriers and 13 battleships the USA already had building or on order. Avoiding the USA in their initial attack would keep the USA out of the war for 6 months anyway, and perhaps a year...but the US buildup was already well underway even before the attack on Pearl. ✌
@khsimagesdotcom856
@khsimagesdotcom856 3 жыл бұрын
@@iKvetch558 Good points! However, I don't know if the scale and priority level of the existing appropriations would have been the same without a Pearl Harbor. WWII was as it appeared to many Americans. A land grab that they did not want to participate in. As long as Germany and Japan stayed away from the Western Hemisphere, they appeared like colonizers (particularly Japan). Colonizing was still the way of the world and did not appear to present a serious threat in and of itself.

I like the unbiased presentation here, and more importantly, highlight that the Pearl Harbour attack is just one small cog in the machine of the larger picture of Japan's attack across the region, and their long-term plans. Too often in the west, especially in the US, people only think about Pearl Harbour and nothing else. But as highlighted here, the Japanese also started the conquest of Southeast Asia at the same time as the Pearl Harbour attack. I am Malaysian and in school history lessons, I learnt about the Japanese attacks on Malaya; the landings and going through "neutral" Thailand, as they marched to "fortress" Singapore. My great grandparents were persecuted by the Japanese soldiers during occupation, due to their Chinese ancestry. Life under occupation was difficult with shortage of food and basic necessities of life.

In the land of "what if", a scenario is that the Japanese postpone the attack until spring. My father is in the Philippines. Does he survive the war? Actually he was stationed in Iceland for two years and then fought in Europe. His signal corp unit was with the 101 st airborne at Bastogne. Paratroopers are volunteers but those in gliders were not. He had glider training but never talked about a combat flight. His comments on the training flights gave my young mind an awe for all those who served.
