This 1995 Ford E-350 cab and chassis with a 7.3 Power Stroke doesn't like to start when it's cold. We test the glow plug system and install a trailer brake controller. Also we attend a meet and greet event in Louisville, KY with Dirt Perfect and many other KZbinrs.

Hey Wes, a word of the wise. The factory/OE equivalent glow plug relays are only 20% duty cycle at the full current of the glow plugs. That’s 12 seconds on, 48 seconds off. This is a problem because the computer runs the glow plugs in a 7.3l power stroke for a full 2 minutes most of the time. The best repair is to locate a White-Rodgers 12v, 200a automation control relay, which is about the same price as the factory, and is rated at 100% duty cycle at full amperage. It’s an old secret to get rid of the glow plug relay problem forever. It even fits in the factory location with no wiring modifications.

After 5 years of ownership and five 'glow plug relays' (all were engine bay decoration, mostly, since none worked for very long), I installed a White-Rogers...it's an install-forget item now. Ford and parts store china garbage don't work because they burn out. I run a manual glow plug switch in the cab and it WORKS EVERY TIME (as they should, but hadn't before)! Install this and you'll never have to do it again. Trust me...

As a tech, the most common issue I find is simply poor quality connections on trailers. Even from the factory its often not great but especially with DIY repairs people almost never make good water tight connections. The plastic covered butt connectors alone are not enough on connections that are exposed to the elements. Wrapping in some E tape is a small step up but but non insulated butt connectors with heat shrink is my preference.

Pretty cool switching between the job and the vlog. I liked it a lot. As for the brake controller, I think in Europe at least it’s super high prio that trailer brakes work independently from the towing vehicle and especially critical to have emergency brakes work in any condition when detached, so a battery on the trailer is a huge point of failure. Most braking trailers are either mechanical or hidraulic and mostly apply the brakes as the trailer pushes against the towing hitch. Some tricks needed sometimes to be able to back up with them ;) (like start backing up, clicks, let off and then you can back up without the brake activating or something) Super interesting how something so common is solved so differently.

Thanks for explaining the brake controller. I didn't know that yet, because in my country, we mostly use a mechanical system, which seems a lot more reliable to me. Our system consists of a spring-loaded compressible drawbar. When the towing vehicle applies its brakes, the forward momentum of the trailer compresses the drawbar against the braking towing vehicle. That compression force will apply braking at the trailer wheels. For reversing, there's a latch that can be applied, which will prevent the drawbar from compressing. Also, there's a handbrake lever. And for safety, a steel cable between this mechanism and a hook at the back of the car will apply the brakes in case the hitch detaches from the towing vehicle while driving.

Hi In Sweden we use a mechanic trailer braking system, this system is integrated in the coupling of the trailer. It's using an piston that will compress when the trailer starts pushing the car and applies the brakes. The emergency break is even simpler it's a steal cable hooked to the car, if the trailer will disconnect from the car it will pull the parking break on the trailer. This system works very good if properly maintained. Love watching your videos😀

I use to have a 7.3 Ford. I only replaced the glow plug relay once. I had the one that turn on and off for 30 seconds. But every fall I had to check the glow plugs so I could replace the bad ones. Also I found out it was best to replace the batteries in pairs.

The reason we use mechanically activated trailer brakes in the EU is that testing has shown them to be quicker acting and more reliable than electronic braking.
@Antto

Yeah. For the passenger car trailers with 750 kg max weight limit it is not required that the trailer has it’s own braking system. At least here in Finland. If the max weight limit of the trailer is more than 750kg then it must be equipped with mechanical brakes and bi-annual inspection.
@alexanderkupke920

@@Antto Same here in Germany, and I think it is valid for most of Europe, with the unified license classes. Main differences may be the inspection intervals. I think just a few years ago one or two companies in the Netherlands got electronic brake systems certified. I think at the time the regulations for certification were made, the Electronic systems back than (and I mean way back then) were deemed not reliable enough. and actually the mechanical (by mechanical I mean completely cable operated) surge brakes worked perfectly fine. For security there is a breakaway cable, which is just a small steel cable that you have to attach to your hitch and if the trailer comes loose, it more ore less pulls the parking brake of the trailer. Just don´t ask me why a standardized size of ball hitches became standard here, as far as I know other forms could be used as well when certified, and there are sure cars with the 2 inch square bar removable hitches around. I can only imagine it was a convenience thing to have the same hitch everywhere. With that working well enough (some trailers even got ABS and modern vehicles ESP kept trailers stable as well) it seems there was not a hughe desire for any change in regulations. Everything larger usually is towed by a larger truck 7.5 tons and more (not like pickup truck) and has air brakes anyways. I think electronic brakes, especially as far as technology has come, work perfectly fine. Every modern vehicle equiped with ABS and ESP has already everything on board to electronically control trailer brakes. But as said before, if a well set up surge brake does exactly the same, no need for an additional system. Although I clearly see an electronic system being more convenient when it comes to backing up a trailer, where you manually have to lock a surge brake first. Only thing speaking against it, you would need a second plug for the breaking system, as neither the 7 pin nor the 13 pin plug common here for trailer lights (Yes, lights on trailers here have to be at minimum blinkers left and right, fog light, breaking light and for what ever reason separate left and right rear lights. May be for compatibility with US vehicles where rear lights and brake lights are the same.)

In the UK there is currently no testing for trailer brakes. Often see or hear trailers with brake rods hanging off underneath and some of the caravans about have got to be bad too.

Hi Wes and Mrs Wes I look forward to watching your videos with the diverse content. Watched the one about the Silverado a few hours ago and was amazed at the rust. My son has a 1993 Toyota Land Cruiser with 460k klms and it has no rust in the chassis or body. Mind you we do not have roads that are salted in winter. Must make you weep when you see all that rust. Keep up the good work and keep having fun. Cheers from Canberra Australia

I have lived in Minnesota all my life and have probably gone through 20 to 25 truck's in my 55 years of driving ( almost 70 y.o.) and almost all have gone to the bone yard due to rust. I had a 79 Dodge Power Wagon that I used for a plow truck. Only had 85K miles on it. I hit a curb with the plow and the frame broke in half. Sold it to a guy that was going to make A mud truck out of the running gear. The 2001 F-250 I currently have has no floor in the box, the doors are shot, cab corners are gone and it only has 150k on it and both of my Broncos are rusting out before my eyes.

Some years ago there was a firm advertising anodes to fit to a truck chassis that absorbed the rust into itself instead of the chassis. This type of anode is standard fitting on most sea going metal ships, tankers, container vessels and so on, changed on a regular basis. Is this not possible on trucks in high salt areas ?. Sea going vessels in salt water all their lives. Any comments ?

@Brian Williamson: I haven't heard of the sacrificial anode system on vehicles before ( I have replaced some in electric water heaters year's ago) but if they actually worked I suspect ( and even if they didn't!) auto parts store's would have large displays of them for sale. They used to push bumper mounted deer whistles all the time and they didn't work at all!

@@garyronan5568 Hi Gary I remember the adverts in various motoring books some years ago. Yesterday I checked on Google and yes there is many such items on offer to attach to trucks, cars etc. But most of the reports pointed out they only work when they have a salt water element surrounding them. Basically an annual replacement on ships etc. but not really suitable on land vehicles. Quite a bit of information on Google. Work on the electrolysis principle it seems.

Intresting how things differ around the world, here in north europe we have mecanical trailer brakes. They works that when the trailer pushes the towcar it engages the brakes, the more it pushes the more brakeing, if the trailer unhooks there is a saftywire hooked to the towcar that aply full/parkingbrake on the trailer. Guess both work, but "our" is more simple, no electric or batteries on the trailer. Guess both systems have same problems with the actual brakes, that they rust and stop working and so on.

@@woodhonky3890 "our" is simpel and "works" I cant see the benefit of uncharged batteries and so on, if the trailer pusches the towcar, the trailer brakes, with or without electric power. Some things are better on that side of the pound, some things are better on this side of the pound.
