I'm really enjoying this. My dad was a Marine in WW2. He was with the 2nd. Saw action at Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa. Got hit with shrapnel on Saipan. He never spoke about it until, roughly, 3 months before he passed away.

Two of my uncles were Marines , one in the 1st Div and the other in the 4th Div. The youngest turned 19 two weeks before he went ashore during the assault on D -day Guadalcanal. They helped teach me to fish, hunt and handle firearms, firearm safety with them was a disciple you quickly learned, the penalty was heavy and delivered quickly. They taught me a lot, they never talked to me or my brothers about the war . They did tell us as we got older and Vietnam loomed possibility on our horizons. That if we had to go, join the Corp and not get drafted and end up in the Army. To them it would have been a dishonorable blow to the family's good name.

Speaking of the bayonet training around 28:50. My vietnam veteran grandfather told me a story of his instructor getting cut demonstrating close combat with bayonets. And that same injury and the way the instructor got cut was how he was attacked during the war and he was able to not get hit and kill the VC soldier after.

Self Confidence is the Primary Element of Morale. Nobody does it better than the US Marine Corps.

Kitchen duty was my favourite......I couldn't believe how the cooks would put sausages in trays into an oven and never turn them. Black n White sausages. It gave me the certain knowledge that Grub was the most important factor, you do what you can to increase everybody's happiness, ....if possible.
