I first read “with the old breed” in 1989 as a Corporal in the Marine Corps. I was so impressed with Eugene and his “Duty, Honor and Creed” displayed in combat, I had those words tattooed on the arm of my right trigger hand along with St Michael striking down the devil. I felt a renewed vow to not complain about what I had been through in the Corps and in fact felt ashamed for ever having complained. God bless you Eugene Sledge and may the lord always keep you by his side and in peace.

Yes I agree. It makes me so sad and disturbed what all the Marines and Army Soldiers had to go through during the ww2 Pacific War. Can’t even imagine ducking and dodging bullets and artillery.

I was in the USAF and went to okanowa on TDY assignment. The whole time we were there we felt like we were on a large unmarked graveyard

It surprised me at his loyalty to the corps and to the officers, it doesn't seem they handled the operations well on a lot of levels. I mean, what was General Rupertus thinking? 4 days? Once they learned the tactics had changed, I didn't get the point of why they kept going at it the same way as before with such a heavy loss. (Well, I do and I don't. They really needed to know how tough the Japanese were and to get our troops ready to know how to handle fighting because there were bigger fish to fry like Okinawa that was coming. James Jones pointed that out in his books. If this was to be a war of attrition, we need to know how to bring about a lot of casualties.} With that said, Rupertus didn't inspire a lot of confidence.

I don't think he had the best knowledge of the entire conflict as we do today, or maybe that was never that important in writing his memoirs as it didn't change much day-to-day. Curious idea though.
