i think it would be better to set 1 limit, and then just limit % of assistance - stronger rider can go faster(because stronger rider will probably be more experienced) 150kph would be more like it

I recently got an ebike, the qicycle. On flat roads, a cyclist who's been riding to the office for years will be able to match my speed or even outpace me by a small amount. But as soon as we hit even a slight incline, I'm passing them with very little effort. Your results pretty much match my experience. Yes it can feel a little slow. But it's just fast enough that I can live with it. And as soon as I hit an incline, I'm reminded why I went electric. I think ebikes have less appeal for professional riders that are very fit and have extremely strong leg muscles.

Thank you for a very interesting test. The bigger issue with the 25km limit is for city riding and its just short of what feels comfortable and slower that a reasonable rider on a race bike can achieve. The American limit of 20mph(32km) is far more enjoyable and does not equip you to ride any faster that a normal bike. Of course 25km limit is only part of the story and the other being the motor restriction of 250w and this is quite bonkers. Firstly every major manufacturer cheats and really the motors are more like 500w but if you want to help for example and older, overweight person to get out and exercise 250w will not get you up a hill. In fact for a 100kg person on a 10% hill at 25km would require 1000w (1kw). I love your channel - thank you for your work.

I'd start by saying that I am a disbled rider of a Cube EMTB which I bought last August 2017. Since then I have covered about 1600 miles and inspite of increadably weak legs caused by muscular wasting (CMT) I have ridden every one of those miles with relative ease, and when I say weak legs, I would not be exagerating to say I don't have the strength to step up a regular curb these days! As an X trials & Enduro rider I love getting dirty and my rides have included the Malvern hills, Dartmoor & Connock chase to name some of them. My point is that mentally I have the ability to ride in what some may consider to be challenging conditions and although I tend to ride in Turbo mode almost always, I feel that I have been given a much needed new pair of legs, I would add that a good friend of mine who rides a non E.bike, and is both 25 years my junior as well as someone who has competed many times in downhill & X country events is often found some distance behind whenever we reach anything greater that a slight gradient, in fact when we rode the Malverns this summer, I reached the summit of the highest beacon a good 10 minutes before he did. Love E.bikes and the fact that I can now re discover my love of mud & the great outdoors Keep up the great work Steve, love the show. 55 year old David...

Dude fuck yes. Super sick to hear you’re riding. Still kinda trying to do the pedal bike thing myself but blew my shoulder real bad.disintegrating discs in my neck. And some other issues. E mtb is something that can get a lot of people who wouldn’t otherwise be able to ride riding. The body sway from sprinting and pumping makes my hand go numb after awhile and I can’t grip as well. But an e mtb I can avoid that. Sit down cruise recover back to the fun. And since I like both uphill and downhill stuff it’s perfect I can avoid both the climbs and pumping or pedaling on the descent when need be. Get up to speed and cruise. That said like the other dude who replied. Depression is a bitch...like I come from bmx but the only possible way I’ll ever be able to do a manual on an mtb again is via pedal kicks to get the front wheel up them shimmy into the manual position and hope my arm doesn’t give out. Though that’s the like worst thing I could do on an mtb. The forks on an mtb alone weigh what my bars fork and often stem do on a bmx. Then let alone wheels. Like with a five pound frame 40oz cranks and forks I got a bike with a gyro three steel pegs and a single ti piece in the entire bike down to 22.5 flat. If I hadn’t changed my tires when I got lighter forks it’d have been 22 flat no ti and 21 flat with ti. And only a spindle and a few bolts swapped. I actually ended up same weight. Lost 12 ounces on the forks and gained 16 in tires and made the bolt tuning pointlesss. Loooked dialed though. For my next bmx I’m looking at even lighter...and for my enduro build I’m aiming for sub 28 with some dh spec parts.....like 36grip2 with MRP ramp control. Floatx2 probably saint brakes. Eagle. I9 hubs we are one rims. Assegai tires. Dropper post. And I’ve already specced a race bike for bmx I could trick that would weigh in around 13-17 pounds. Depends if I go gyro and put pegs on it and cash flow. And I’m basically planning on ou weight weenie’ing the biggest weight weenie in bmx without drilling holes in my shit. Ti frame fork bars maybe cranks. A 13 ounce street durable freecoaster. That’d be like saying a dh proof xc bike that weighs 20 pounds.... Technically you not support lift more than three pounds with the left arm...shhhh I just split the weight between my arms and don’t count stabilizing muscles. :P Anyways my point was whatever it takes to ride. Imma be doing tricks on foot tall ledges on a bmx worth more than some enduro bikes. But if it keeps me riding. Hey

I ride a Carrera Crosfuse for a living (Eco, Tour, Sport, Turbo Modes). I'm a cycle courier and I regularly ride at 20 mph under my own power, above the 15.5 mph speed restriction but that takes quite an effort to keep up over 4 to 8 hours. So I do find the restriction too slow. I ride on the roads where the speed limit is 30mph. I constantly have impatient cars beeping at me and pushing past unsafely. I am very much seen as a second class road user and I get cursed at every single shift. I use lights, I wear reflectives, I wear a helmet I wait at traffic lights and I take command of my lane where appropriate for my own safety. If I'm on a 4-5 hour shift I use Turbo and I get around 35 miles use. 6-7 hours I have to use Tour. 8 hours or more I have to use Eco. My speeds up hill are 15.5 mph and down to about 11mph in Eco. If I could comfortably travel at 25mph without burning myself out over a shift I would in fact be much safer. Cars would be much less likely to push past at that speed. My bike has hydraulic brakes which work very well, I use quality tyres and replace them when they wear down, I'm not going to have issues stopping. Down hill I can easily go over 30mph on any bike. I believe there is a genuine cycle safety case for increasing the e-bike speed limit to this level. I don't believe this test proves anything more than you get a marginally average faster speed as you can reach that 15mph cruising speed more quickly with a an ebike and your uphill sections are easier so you get less tired. It feels like its saying that 16mph is the top speed of an ebike, it's not. You can go much faster, the motor is just not helping you after that point.

Like the channel guys, keep them coming. However when you do these videos you always concentrate on rider weight and tyre choice, time and time again. You fail to mention rider ability and fitness. I am late 50's and not as fit as the young guys, and THAT is the main reason I own an eBike. If it wasn't for the motor, I would be left behind and unable to go places I can now get to. To me that is the main reason for owning an eBike, it gives me back my younger legs and allows me to go place I would otherwise not get to. As for 25Kph limit, I just pedal through it on the flatter sections, it's the climbing I need the eBike for. Cheers.

Totally agree! As 4 me, I am fast heading to my 76th birthday and switched to a Cannondale E-MTB a few months ago. Its amazing how much it has changed my choice of routes. The 25km limit is, I think, a perfect speed as regards battery endurance. Staying in EC mode as much as pos also helps. On the flat I often find myself cruising comfortably at about 27 kph, without assist of course. One golden rule is to change gear, and only change the power mode as a last resort. I managed 105 km a month ago (flat) and there was still enough in the battery to continue. Cant say that about my battery though. It all boils down to how fit, strong and young we are.

neil day I feel the same with my Bosch, if they want to cut the motor at 25 then make it feel like you are not hitting a brick wall, give us a measly amount of continuous power say 50w above 25km/hr to overcome the friction and extra weight of the bike. Riding long distances like 20kms with the limiter constantly cutting in and out makes you just want to dump the bike in the river and walk. Especially when all the other commuters are riding past you on their normal road bikes doing about 30.. why do we have to get penalised for riding an ebike..!!

I have a E-bike with a Bafang hub motor, it's inferior for hill climbing but you have no resistance if you want to go faster than 25, because it has a freewheel in the hub motor. With a fresh charged battery it's also running 28 km/h, not only 25, without derestricting it.

First off I'm in the U.S. so my bike is restricted at 20 mph and my go to ride is to ride 11 miles of road to the trails, get in 8-10 miles of off road riding and then ride the 11 miles back home. What I find is that I actually use trail mode (Shimano E-8000) on the road to ensure my legs are good for the trails, go into eco mode for the off road as I like the feeling better than the higher boost levels when riding rocky terrain and then on the way home I'll toggle between eco and trail depending of how I feel and how much battery I have left. The only time I use boost mode is up a very steep street near my house and even at max effort and a low gear I'm moving at less than 10 mph up that.

I think you have done a great job explaining the 25km restriction on an emtb and for 80% of people I would agree with you. If they had a Road Mode setting, that would be awesome. I have come from Road Riding and I bike my emtb to the tracks.. My average speed on the Trails is 20km which shows me that this video makes a whole lot of sense. New Zealand has a 32km/h restriction and that works perfect on the trails. It's the longer, flatter trails rides that bother me.. In Eco Mode I ride unrestricted at 36km/h at 85 cadence, well beyond the restriction limit and for most fit mtb and Road riders would agree that the 25km.h limit is too slow for us. If I can go flat out on a standard mtb down a hill at 40+km/h why restrict the emtb so they can't?

To be honest, the 25kph limit is what's stopping me from buying an e-bike. I am that guy who commutes by putting the bike on a train and does lots of shorter trips along towpaths and on the road. At 53 and with a big climb between home and work an e-bike capable of 40kph gets me off the train and therefore it pays for itself in short order - but a 25kph limit means that my travel time becomes excessive. I've waited for common sense to prevail from our legislators but it hasn't, so next spring will see me ordering a Bafang mid drive.

I don't have an ebike yet, so I can't speak from any personal experience, but there have to be some laws or rules on the use of ebikes on public lands and trails, and if these are the restrictions, well, so be it. But if we are talking use on private lands--such as renting time at a race track to do a buck-fifty on a motorcycle--well, no holds barred, let 'em rip as fast as an open-class motocrosser. And thanks for all of your investigations and comparisons, Steve. You are a fabulous ebike advocate. You'll have all of us on one, eventually, at least some of the time.

For commuting I agree with Anthony that it would be safer for the limit being 20mph(32Km/h). I do a lot of commuting and used a Bionx motor with US firmware (cuts off at 20mph) and it felt much safer among the traffic than when it was cutting at 15mph (25Km/h). For the trails I used an eMTB on lent from a store for 3 trail days and never felt the need for assistance above the 25K.

Thanks for explaining a lot of the things that are puzzling people like me. I used to be a regular user of a mountain bike. Not the "whizzy" ones but an ordinary "get about" sort of bike but not having ridden one for about 18 years I had the urge to start again. I am what would normally be called very fit, walking a lot of miles and exercising with weights etc but at 72 yrs old and living in a mountainous region of Southern Spain I wondered how I would cope in the summers where it gets up to nearly 40 degrees regularly. I started looking at e-bikes with that in mind. Channels like yours have helped tremendously and I am now awaiting delivery of my first such machine. So thanks again for helping to clear up a lot of the mystery.

I ride my ebike here in Florida where the speed limit is supposed to be 20mph for electric bikes. Well we have roads around here that people do 60mph in 45mph. They’re also not particularly aware. I find feels safer if their approach speed to me isn’t triple mine. I built my ebike from scratch, putting in a 60v 2500w mid drive motor. I tested my ebike at 42.5 mph. That is double the speed limit and yes I find that too fast on a regular bike frame. I tend to keep it around 25 mph so that I don’t get pulled over, so far for a couple years it has worked. Having the power in reserve is reassuring.

Excellent comparison between bikes in different situations. 25kph is too slow for public roads as regular light weight bikes can travel at 30-40kph. Also there is a well founded argument that indicates that if you are closer to the speed of vehicular traffic, the less likely you are to be be involved in a collision. A mtb ebike comes into it’s own off road in hilly terrain where technical riding necessitates slower speeds. Some ebikes are much harder to pedal above 25kph because of the drag of the motor on the crank. Riding in the higher modes drains the battery quickly so unless you’re riding short distances, the lower levels of assistance are preferred. Ebikes get more cars off the road and unfit/ageing people into healthy lifestyles. This can only be a positive thing.

This is an older video but it is the arguably the most varied and in some way the most practical comparison around. It’s not a powered and unpowered head to head bike comparison. Thank you on behalf of all riders who need a leg up on rides for various personal and physical reasons. Look forward to see more!

Hi Steve (again)! Of course in the U.S., there is NOT the 25kph restriction. In the U.S., federal laws state an e-bike has to have a motor of less than 750 watts, etc., etc. Now federal laws DO NOT preempt each state from adopting their own traffic laws and vehicle codes pertaining to the use of e-bikes, both on- and off-road. As an example, California has adopted the 3 Class tiered system (per recommendations by BPSA, Bicycle Product Suppliers Assoc.). Classes 1 (pedal-assist only) & 2 (throttle-assist with operative pedals) a max limit of 20 mph and Class 3 (pedal-assist only) of 28mph (with some KEY restrictions). I could talk more on this, but I'll not boar everyone with such. Hope this helps in clarifying some differences between Europe and the USA! Be safe out there everyone! Note that that 28 mph pedal assist limit is based on the German S-Pedelec regulations (which are limited to 45 km/h), because of some companies making bikes designed to those regulations. However, legally, those are considered a variant of mopeds in Europe (with all of the legal requirements of a moped - IIRC S-Pedelec is just allowed to use some bicycle infrastructure that gasoline mopeds aren't).

Don't think the limit is an issue at all for climbing. It is as mentioned, the shallow pedally downhill sections where you dip in and out of assistance. The motor cuts out and you are in too high a gear to pedal, you change down and drop back into the assist zone and the gear is too low. Would be interested to see a comparison between an EU 25kph bike and a US 20mph bike on a trail as described. My thoughts are if you are on a DH trail above 20mph you are not pedalling anyway.....

I know this is about the restriction above 25kmh BUT the test is flawed..... ALL 3 bikes have a different use/purpose and as many have said the E-bike enables some either with a disability or of later years to carry on cycling. E-Road bikes may require some de-restriction for road safety and keeping up with younger roadies BUT E-MTB is simply about hill climbing and enabling more distance. Once you increase the speed over 25kmh you use battery quickly, which is counter productive. If down hilling turn the electrics off and use human power until you drop speed & need an assist again. Some people are obsessed with speed, E-MTB IS NOT what this is about TBH!

I believe that it's kind of typical to begin using the power assist modes more conservatively after putting 2,000 miles on an e-bike, especially if commuting or touring on fairy level terrain. I get three trips per charge lately, when I had normally only got two, mainly because I use the eco mode until I feel I've earned some boost.

Once I acclimated to it, I use the Tour or Sport mode and not often the Turbo, as I found the more efficient way to use the motor- high cadence, smooth pedaling. I just got mine a few days ago and have almost 90 miles on it. Tons of fun on single track, somewhat boring on pavement, as I can go faster on my non-powered bikes, especially the touring bike.

25kph was decided/lobbied for by UK cyclists. e-bikes can use bike lanes, and UK cyclists didn't want anything powered/faster sharing their lanes. The UK cycling activists would really rather not have anything powered in cycle lanes, by setting the limit so low they have pretty much got what they wanted.

Use a made in China motor controller with a blue wire power control. Fit a switch on the wire and it will switch between 250w legal for Uk and whatever the controller is rated for (and your motor) for off road. You can also put more than 250w through a 250w motor for off road with a bigger speed controller but dont go mad! stick with something like 350w or perhaps 500w controller if you know the motor can take it. Mid drive motors usually have the speed controller built in, so usually you wont be able to switch between different wattage limits... Also most 36v motors will take 48v with a 48v speed controller even though the motor is 'rated' for 36v. In fact if you take a 36v and 48v motor apart most of them are the same motor, even the wire gauge of the windings and number of windings are the same and you will find some sellers rate their motor as 36/48v... A motor will spin at a certain rpm for every volt you supply to it, and the more volts you supply the less current it will consume. So a 36v 250w motor will require 6.94amps, but a 48v 250w motor will only require 5.2amps. SO we can increase the voltage of a 36volt 250w motor to 48v and gain 25% in speed, and THEN increase the controller from a 250w to a 350watt and still only consume 7.29amps from the battery, not overloading the motor windings fromtheir designed 7 amp current draw.... If you know the motor is a good one then you could push to 500w(10.4amps) and switch between 250w and 500w using the switch on the blue 'power' wire...

I don't understand this argument, if we are saying that you would not get over the speed limit anyway, why do we have to have a restriction on in the first place? I personally have deresticted my ebike, because I didn't like the feel of the motor cutting in and out. I very rarely go above the restricted speed, because you still have to put a lot of effort in, just because it's deresticted don't mean you can speed along at 40 mph! But I know the bigger picture here is not to have any more draconian legislation coming inn on the back of people deresticting their bikes.

That's a good point. Derestricting the speed at which point the motor gives assistance is not the same increasing the power output of the motor, and as the power needed to overcome the air resistance squares with speed, if you want to go faster it's the rider themselves that has to put the extra power in. I'm all for restricting the max motor power output but physics deals with the speed restriction so there is no need for an artificial one.
@MrMartinSchou6 жыл бұрын
It's restricted at 25, because otherwise it would be considered a moped in some EU countries (keep in mind that this is an EU regulation). If it becomes a moped, it becomes burdened with other demands, such as requiring a driver's license (or being above a certain age), licence plate, obligatory insurance, obligatory helmet etc. Additionally, if it becomes a moped, then it would be illegal to drive faster than 30 km/h in some countries, because that's the speed limit for mopeds. If you go above that, it'd be an "EU moped" with stricter requirements and if it can go above 45 km/h it's now a motor cycle and stricter requirements still. By keeping it below the speed of a moped, you everyone access to the eBike, regardless of age or driver's license (or lack thereof). We could add a second class of eBikes, say 750 watt, 45 km/h pedelec, but that would inevitably end up coming with increased regulations, and I don't think anyone would want a bicycle to have requirements for a licence plate, insurance and motorcycle level helmets. It's easy to say "we should just make it unlimited for everyone", but that opens up a whole other can of worms, because if a 50 kW 110 km/h limited pedelec isn't a motor cycle but a 125 CC gasoline powered off road motorcycle IS, then something's clearly wrong. If you then get rid of motorcycles as a classification altogether, you then open yourself up for all kinds of other issues. This car only has three wheels, so it's clearly a motor cycle and not a car, so I can let my 5 year old drive me around when I'm drunk. But wait - what about quad cycles? Are those motor cycles in all this? If yes, then that opens up a whole lot of other arguments for not having your four wheeled car classified as a car. Saying "scrap it" is very easy, as is ignoring the consequences of it, but that's not how the world works. Scrap requirements or legislation, and you'll see a massive rush to exploit that gap.
@MrMartinSchou6 жыл бұрын
> I'm all for restricting the max motor power output but physics deals with the speed restriction so there is no need for an artificial one. Only to a certain extent. If you're on a UCI race approved road bike with a 250 watt motor with pedelec but no speed restriction, and I'm on a full fairing recumbent bicycle with the same motor and pedelec setup, I guarantee you the speed restrictions will be massively different for the two of us, and that's just wrong from a legislative point of view. It's not unusual to see a full fairing recumbent maintaining 40 to 50 km/h on a flat road for long periods of time. Hell, the hour record for unassisted vehicles (meaning no external power source, no driving behind a car to cut the wind resistance etc, is currently at 93.432 km. Imagine what that'd do with an extra 250 watts of powered dumped into the drive train for that hour. And yes, from a legislative point of view, that is still a bicycle (or eBike if it had that assistance). Or more realistically, imagine the "standard" full fairing velomobiles with a 250 watt assistance not limited by speed. I've seen them easily keeping up with traffic - if they had that 250 watt (or higher) boost for an unlimited speed, you'd have a ton of car owners bitching about the assholes on bikes flying past them in traffic, not having to pay congestion charge or road taxes etc., and then we'd be back to the motor cycle discussion from times gone by.

I have a question for ebike enthusiasts - Is it possible to have a high torque motor that is speed limited to 25km per hour - the reason I ask is that where I live there are many steep roads on hills but by law the speed is capped at 25km ?
@rayverhelst38686 жыл бұрын
Steve, obviously you have received comments from us folks on the other side of the pond. We understand you are UK and EU based so your programming will concentrate on the local laws. In the US, we don't have the benefit of broader MTB trail access where speed is less of an issue and torque is more beneficial. The gravel roads you speak of in the video, here are called HOA trails on public lands and are used by a multitude of motorized vehicles. Between those and the traditional commuter bike lanes on public roads, we need the 20mph standard to keep up and to not become an obstacle for motorcycles, ATVs, off-road recreational vehicles, cars, and trucks. This has been the motivation for the Class 3 speed pedelec. The other reason you have these restrictions is due to economics. With the bulk of the eMTB market being in your backyard, there is no incentive for Bosch, Brose, and other European-based engineering firms to build a 500watt or 700watt motor. The 250/350watt (max burst mode) is your limit and right now, you have the dominance in the marketplace. With our overweight society, we could use the additional power not so much for the speed but for the torque to move the masses. Higher watt output would also be great for cargo bikes. If an when the North American marketplace catches up and potentially we see the on-shoring of manufacturing, then we will see a larger selection of different-sized motors being produced. At that time, the 20mph will become far more common.
@embn6 жыл бұрын
It's an interesting thought. But we would think that having more of the market would mean more say in the limitations (but when does the consumer have much say in that sort of thing anyway). It's particularly interesting to hear about your HOA trails. Thanks for sharing!

Nonsense. You can still only pedal as fast as the gearing will allow, regardless of the assistance provided. No MTB ebiker in their right mind would gear their bike up to do much more than 40 km/h because it would then be unusable on the trails - you can't put massive chain rings on MTB ebikes and still have low gearing for steep hills. ebikes should allow for assistance up to the limit of the gearing.
@tamasvarga676 жыл бұрын
Paul McBurney What is nonsense? Assist speed limit is necessary so they can be ridden as regular bicycles. Speed pedelec exists and the assist goes up to 45kph. They are in the same category with scooters and same requirements - motorbike helmet, insurance etc. and legally can be ridden where scooters can be.
@WeAreTheTrueMedia6 жыл бұрын
Tamas Varga, that's the point..... It's the gearing that gives any bike or vehicle it's theoretical top speed. Emtb need to be able to climb steep slopes therefore limiting the top speed regardless of electronic restrictions. It's road ebikes that need some kind of limit but as it is, non electric road bikes already go much faster than cars round towns and cities and nobody restricts them.

If you are ride in motorized vehicle, there's no speed limiting device required and you can't use the bicycle trails. E(assisted)-bikes are not created for fun rides in the first place. It was created for people who need the more power, mothers with children in the seats in the hilly area for example. Mopeds are always available, if you want to have fun. Don't be lazy. @JohnRushworth6 жыл бұрын
markotrieste True they probably didn’t have a clue but I suspect (certainly in the U.K. and EU) the speed cut out and nominal power was dictated more by existing legislation for mopeds, motorcycles and 3 wheelers. Also I suspect that as here in Scotland they can be used on trails where walkers go that has a bearing too. Personally I’m happy that pedal assist is classed as a bicycle as mopeds and motorcycles are no longer allowed on the trails in Scotland, other than private land.

Hey Steve, can you post a video of a derestricted 250w pedal assist mountain bike and see once and for all what speed the limits are in place to stop? I bet it's no more than a lightweight cross country bike can go on the flats.

I’m well pissed off my Ebike is limited to 25kph 40kph would be way better. Typical uk I just use it for commuting and pootling along at 25kmh is way too slow

Don't expect politicians who are chauffeured around London in a Jag to understand this...

Totally agree. Car , oil and insurance industries instructing their working group, the Govt, to impose restrictions on a competitor, that's going to massively damage their revenue, with this new technology, which can have the same impact as trams and combustion vehicles that replaced horse drawn trams circa 1900.

My workplace did a free trial of ebikes to encourage people to commute on them. I borrowed one and after one commute was fed up of the stupid 15mph limit as it just wasnt fast enough to cruise at. After some research at work that day I figured out how to remove the restriction and it would then happily cruise at 20-25mph it made all the difference! Infact it was the difference between me not wanting to buy one to actually wanting to own one so really they are shooting themselves in the foot with the 15mph limit as its putting people off buying them to commute on.

Build your own ebike. No limits.

Apart from the fact it won’t be any good for going downhill....

Would times vary if the bikes were ridden in a different order, did Steve get enough recovery time between runs? And the distance doesn't reflect a realistic scenario. Who goes out for a 1/4 mile (or whatever the distance was) ride? But some interesting points were made for sure
@dalem11406 жыл бұрын
When you use the road to get to the trail 25 is To slow. On the trail its Probably fast enough.............I,d be tempted to make mine go a bit faster but mainlt for roads..............
@busterrabbit6 жыл бұрын
Making e bikes go faster is illegal, and the reason they are restricted in the first place! The alternative is an electric motorbike, with licence and insurance.
@marksmith86636 жыл бұрын
I only really notice the restriction holding me back on smooth paths or roads then I take my lightweight push bike out for that . Great test and brilliant show 👍

of course its too slow, not even a question!
@embn6 жыл бұрын
Well, we're trying to see if it's actually too slow everywhere. Like, where you are wanting to actually ride your bike off-road.
@shards146 жыл бұрын
I agree that ppl rides too much with turbo mode. I got Trek Powerfly 9 and ride 90% time on tour mode, witch makes the assisting very dynamic and not hitting the 25kph limit like wall alltime.
@leedove72556 жыл бұрын
I mentioning this on another video but I think people who complain about the speed limit either have never ridden an eBike or never ride off road . It would also be worth pointing out that an eBike is fast downhill and has NO speed restriction , it is only motor assist that stops at 25kph

Maybe it's you who've never ridden an unlimited bike?

Lee dove, most trail centres have fire roads that link each section. 25kph is unnecessarily slow on these stretches. A 250watt mountain bike that's geared for climbing will only be able to go so fast regardless of the limit.
@4nlimited3dition_4n3d6 жыл бұрын
"downhill and has NO speed restriction" - That only applies to bikes with a geared hub motor or a mid drive. Not gearless hub motors, which still make up a big chunk of the bikes sold.

Ive changed the limiter on my my ebike to 35km/hr. Worth it, Now i dont feel the motor cutting in and out constantly when crusing to / from the trail. I still ride with an heart rate of 170, but i keep between 25 and 30km/hr , since 250watts is 250watts, It just wont give you any more power.
@MyWorldRS6 жыл бұрын
Denmark just opened for 1 year test for 40 km/h limit for ebikes. Dont think its an issue on trail/fireroad But in town trafic its going to be inetresting to follow if theres going to be more accidents and what damage there is afterwards

Just derestrict the ebike. Easy to do, especially the levo :)

It's perhaps easy to void warranty where you live but around here, they pretty much can't limit the basic consumer warranty. They would have to prove your interference caused the issue. And if the mod was done by a shop, not by yourself, there would be warranty on it as well. Yes, some companies like to scare monger (generally speaking), but there is no way they could win in a court. It's only a problem with extended warranties. Then you have to follow their rules. Assuming they would even care (you know, you can always ask the dealer to do it).

Other issue is that if (somehow) police find it, bye bye driving license.
@YouCantParkThereMate6 жыл бұрын
Th3Gr33k The dirty derestriction is like a pig on my Giant in sport mode. That all or nothing has made me cringe a few times if I pull off in the wrong gear, i dont like battery abuse. I do like the fact that you lose a lot of telemetry and it limits itself to 25mph because of this. Also Normal mode is almost as it was so i can still take it easy most of the time.
@YouCantParkThereMate6 жыл бұрын
flip inheck You are right in the motors themselves arent restricted. Most bikes have a speed controller that needs to be restricted due to the different laws. Its cheaper to implement software for one speed controller than it is to buy/make different speed controllers.

HI i like your test but our gravel i MANITOBA is way to rough for a road bike with those small tires . We also allow here in our province to go 33 km but still a little slow
