Come and join Ol’ Mate as he cycle tours the 900 km off road Mason Trail stretching from Blinman in the Flinders Ranges to Adelaide, the Capital City of South Australia. This trip has it all…suspense, drama, heartache, misery and most of all; a sense of achievement.
In this Episode, I bump into more people on the track in 5 hours then I’ve seen in 5 days! There is no respite as I cycle thru endless Farmland and encounter torturous hill climbs that even a Billy Goat would struggle in. The last night is spent in Hallett with a small group exchanging stories and experiences of cycle trips far and wide.
Grab ya gear; Lets go!

Your a legend Stevo! Being from Adelaide, I have riden my KTM through those places a lot over the years on my way back or to the Flinders. It's good to see that you can get somewhere to rest your head in most of those little towns along the way. I've often wondered whilst cruising along on my adventure bike what I would do if I had a serious breakdown.. (Not that it would happen lol -no Ktm jokes please). I grew up in the Barossa Valley and we would often go over to Hallet in the 1990's. It has declined in population a lot since then!. Looking forward to the rest of the trip and great work on the push bike (I think 1290 cc would help some what on those long stretches though... lol). Take care Nikko

Another great episode Steve, sometime in the future could you please do a bit of a rig rundown to let us all know what worked and what didn't? I'm considering the Mawson trail for Autumn 2025.... Hi Phil, the trailer works for me....easy to unhitch, one big bag so you dont need to go searching (its gotta be in there somewhere lol), low centre of gravity, tough, lightweight. What didnt work??? It all went according to plan. This wasn't my first Rodeo. The trailer has done about 24,000km since 2003. If i came across something unexpected I just worked around it. Improvise, adapt, overcome. The only hiccup (Eps 5 or 6) is that i didnt do enough research into accommodation and was left homeless. Just a heads up, the bus shuttle from Geneisis Bus Service will not be running in 2024. Regards.

Beautifully filmed and put together Steve. Like your motorcycle adventures, you bring us all along without fuss. You mentioned the irrigation channel near Spalding. On a trip back from the Red Centre to Vic, I rode my trusty DR650 through here to Burra. It was spring and very green. What I remember the most was a pipe, about a metre in diameter that tracked the road. I'm guessing that has replaced the open channel? As mentioned in other comments, the drone footage around Spalding captures the feel of the place perfectly. Looking forward to the next installment!

My grandfather's (Pop) family on my mother's side pioneered the region around Jamestown. When Pop came back from World War 1, he was granted some land (soldier's settlement) at Mannanarie I think, where he built his house. It is bloody hard country and eventually Pop and grandma were starved off the land. They went to the Coorong near the Murray mouth and then eventually settled in Adelaide. It was near Jamestown at Terowie train station 1942 that General Douglas MacArthur made his statement "I came out of Bataan and I shall return.”

Hi Mick, this from Google; The word 'kangaroo' comes from the Guugu Yimidhirr people sharing the word 'gangurru' with James Cook and the crew of the Endeavour in 1770. The flag I bought and fly primarily for when I go overseas. I use to fly the Australian Flag but people didn’t recognise it….thought I was a Pom, Kiwi or other European. Reading this reminded me of when I was a young soldier training in the rainforests of North Queensland. Up there they had a thing called ‘Wait-a-While’. It was a barbed thin vine that would be suspended under the tree canopy. If you were unfortunate enough to walk into it, it was so strong that you would be stopped in your tracks, have to reverse up, and walk around it. If you tried to push thru it would rip your clothes to bits and easily tear skin. Patrolling at night was the worst. Good times 😂😂😂

@mongreldogproductions
@mongreldogproductions 9 ай бұрын
No punctures on this trip…left with new rubber and over inflated tyres. I think the electricity generated by the turbines just goes straight to the Grid. South Australia has had some issues historically with electricity supply. Those turbines are dotted throughout the State.
@Peter57808
@Peter57808 9 ай бұрын
The turbines do go into the grid. On sunny, windy days the turbines are at standstill as the price for generated power is up to -$150 per MWH, yes negative! We don't have an interconnector to NSW so there is nowhere for the renewable power to go, the price goes negative and the turbines have to be shutdown. As for slime, I ride around Whyalla on an EMTB and tubeless with liquid sealant is the way to go. We have three corner jacks everywhere and the only thing that gets me home is the tubeless setup.

Hey Steve we have those Jacks here in Mulwala, had a nice 6 k walk home one day, hit a patch of them, 11 in the tyre! Got goop after that. Had a cuppa tea at the same servo in Spaulding! Thanks for the memories! 🍺🍺

We call them bindi’s in VIC and you would nearly need solid rubber tyres, trust me our kids used heavy tubes and slime and they still punctured the tubes.

Bindis here in WA are an inconvenience and are annoying but wouldn’t puncture a tyre. Just goes to show that different States have different nick names for the same thing. Im glad I bypassed that section… Thanks for watching.

Used to be plenty of caltrop around the Carine section of the bike path into Perth but I believe it’s been all killed off, lucky for me I used to join it closer to Perth, heaps worse than the plain old double g from people I spoke to that had to deal with it

Double gees is a term I’m familiar growing up here in Perth. Haven’t seen them for a while so I figured we’ve been successful in killing it off. 😀

I can see the rationale behind trikes like a lounge chair and cycling all rolled into one but you're going to hit every bump in the road.

Hi Ben, BOB (Beast of Burden) Ibex...no longer in production unfortunately. There might be some second hand ones out there. There are a lot of cheap knock offs but you get what you pay for. Mine has done about 24,000 km since 2003. See the Link below. www.outdoorgearlab.com/reviews/biking/bike-cargo-trailer/bob-ibex-plus 😀

As I understand it ( I could be wrong) the community grow crops on the roadside and use the money for community projects. I’ve spent a bit of time in and around Jamestown and they seem to be a very community minded place. Like most country towns I guess. The pub does a great sirloin steak schnitzel too 😎🍻
