Love your videos. Been flying models for over 50 years and your videos do take me back to my school days. Strange as I approach retirement I look back at the fun I had with the early models. Keep the videos coming I love them.

Thank you. Nice coincidence. I haven't done a video for a long time, and when your kind comment arrived I was just going out into the garden to do a video. Thanks again! BC

Very good Brian, you are a very good master teacher at vintage diesel engines, I learn good tips and ticks to start, ricj and undercompressed :-) and also very good feel the noise of overcompressed. Fantastic class Mr. COX

+Doonside Mills 678 Hi Chris, Thanks for your kind remarks. I've been messing about with these engines since they were new. If you have any problems, let me know. Regards, Brian

Hi Brian, I do enjoy these videos. I wonder if you might be able to shine some light on a mysteriously modified engine I aquired recently. I have a Cox Pee Wee, which the previous owner converted to diesel. In doing so he drilled a tiny hole in the head, the purpose of which I don't understand. Diesels have uprated cranks and con rods to deal with the higher torque, I believe, and seen as this evidently hasn't been uprated I suppose it could be to relieve some of the compression when running. What do you reckon?

+petrolnut Hi, Thanks for your kind comments. Concerning your PeeWee. You don't say exactly where the hole is drilled. If it's in the centre of the head (where the glow filament was), then it's probably for a compression screw. If it's elsewhere, then I can't see any likely reason, and it may just be a mistake... In any case, there's no such thing as "relieving compression" in a diesel engine, or any other engine that I'm aware of, unless you go back to very old motorcycle engines, that had a "valve lifter", that reduced compression so that they could be kicked over... A diesel with the compression "relieved" (no compression) will never run! Finally, glow engines converted to diesel, for me, are just something to be avoided. It makes me feel a bit sad when I see Americans (usually) discussing their diesel problems, that are mainly down to the fact that they're simply misusing engines designed as glows! I once possessed a Cox 049 diesel conversion. It was AWFULL compared with the super old small English diesels that I'm used to... Sorry but you did ask for my opinion... I just wouldn't mess with glow conversions...

+Brian Cox Thanks for the quick response!. I should have been a little more specific. The centre of the head, where the glow plug should be, has a homemade compression screw setup. Next to this, drilled into the head at an angle, is a 0.5mm (at a guess) hole, which isn't threaded. When the engine is spun over it appears to have some compression still. I suppose it could've been a failed experiment. If you believe it isn't worth messing with then I wonder if it might be possible to find a glow plug to fit the head, and plug the hole, or just find a new head. I suppose if I want to experiment with diesels I should attempt with a good engine, as this Cox would probably just put me off.

+petrolnut Hi, OK, the compression screw must be operating some kind of contra-piston. Would be interesting to see it. There's not much room. I hope it's not some kind of alloy sheet (from a drink can) arrangement.. Maybe the hole you mention is simply a tool grip for screwing/unscrewing... I'm trying to avoid just giving you my ideas and opinions, but I can't help wondering why you bought this thing and what on earth could you do with it... In fact, you've simply purchased a problem (to get the thing to run). I hate this kind of "iffy" situation with tiny converted glows. You my have seen the little "K" 0.2 cc engine in my videos. That engine is nearly seventy years old. It's smaller than a PeeWee, and it's a fabulous runner! If you should decide to convert your PeeWee back to glow, new glow heads are available here: coxengines.ca/cox-.020-glow-head.html Sorry that I'm not really much help. BC

Hi, I have one of these, a really lovely engine, probably the nicest I have ever owned. Unfortunately mine suffered a fatigue failure between the crank web and the shaft so it needs a rebuild. Well worth doing, do you anyone whole does this sort of work to a high standard using decent materials?
@briancox3691
@briancox3691 7 жыл бұрын
Hi, Yes they're super engines. Are you sure you didn't overload it?! The best option for superb work would be Jon Fletcher in Oz, but your real problem isn't that... The kind of work you need today may well cost more than the value of the engine. In other words, your best bet would be to look out for a similar engine on eBay. Ideally, an engine in poorish condition, but with a good crankshaft would be relatively cheap, and certainly less expensive than the work you're considering. In fact, if you bought an engine in overall excellent condition, I think it would still be less expensive than making and fitting a crankshaft... Regards, BC

Yes Charles. Life is hard sometimes, but I'm saving up for another one... Another solution would be to mess with engines that don't run... then your rag never gets blown away... I haven't tried that.

Hahah lovely .... you might like to try zero pitch propellers, in case the engine starts inadvertently ! And a flying tip, I always use aluminium noseweights, to bring that CG up with less detriment to the glide. Love your videos Brian, always a step back to a gentler era. All the best

Hi, I forgot to show the fuel mixture in the video. Sorry! It's very close to 3 equal parts of ether/kerosene/castor oil, with a little nitrate additive. But the exact mixture is not critical. In most of my other videos, I show the label on the fuel can (it's English commercial fuel) and the label states the exact proportions. You'll find it easily in my other diesel videos but, like I said, the exact mixture is not very critical.

Köszönöm a gyors válaszod. Nekem 15% éter, 60%petróleum, és 25% ricinus olajjal megy egy Mk-17, és egy Marz 2,5D.
