FINISH IT!!! Sorry. I saw the intro to the plane yesterday and my brain went to the one that has been sitting in the window of the local hobby shop for literally years, making me somehow I think it was an older video of yours that I missed. When you talked about installing flaps I was like "I need to see that, that might apply to some of the what I want to do," and started searching and I had the "he must have never gotten back to it," reaction. ;-) Imagine how happy I was to see this :-) I’ve been thinking about cutting into a wing I have here and installing some flaps/servos and have been debating flap hinge geometry (fouler/slotted flaps vs a tape hinge) and have been wanting to keep the plane as simple/light as possible and was especially interested when you said you were going to do this with one servo and fouler flaps. So: - I'm jealous of your DX18... I have a DX6i and I seem to always need another channel... - I can’t believe that you’re doing all that work with it just balanced upside down on the airplane, that would drive me crazy, for that matter it’s driving me nuts that it’s not moving on you - The hot knife thing with the shim is kind of interesting. I’m surprised it stays hot enough for long enough to do that. The nice thing with that approach is that you can heat the tip and use the non hot part to guide the cut straight. I usually have good luck freehanding cuts like that with a good sharp blade, but this time I cut my flaps by cutting a block with the correct angle in it and I screwed a razor blade to it to get a perfect angle on the cut. - How/with what equipment are you shooting these videos? I don’t know how many times I’ve thought “I bet people would like to see me do this,” and then either gave up as it’s too big a hassle to do or set something up on a tripod and ended up with a video that didn’t really show it well or worse, tried to hand hold it making both the video and my work crappy. - I’ve been trying to find that dynam PN in stock somewhere for a while… I see you’ve found them under another PN. I was actually ready to 3d print my own. - “looks like the short side is supposed to be on the flap,” and then you go on to do it the other way 😉 I think they work out better with the short side on the flap (well after drawing out my hinges in cad to print, I haven’t gotten my hands on those) - What kind of glue where you talking about using to hold the hinges in? I couldn’t make it out in the video. Hurry up and finish this 😉 I’m very curious what to end up with and you have me seriously considering going to the hobby shop and asking if they want to get rid of the one they have that has been sitting there for years. I was wondering why no one seemed to like them, especially with all the spare parts in stock at the shop.

I can't respond to all of your points due to family stuff going on, but I'll hit a few items quickly... Stuff upside-down and loose drives me crazy too, but I learned long ago, the more times you take something apart and put it back together, the higher the likelihood of permanent damage - IE any car repair EVER - LOL! DX18 = It IS awesome, and I've never been left wanting for anything with it!DX6 = You will be jealous ;) LOL ....My conclusion and recommendation, You should get a dx8 or dx9 USED...they will be a TON cheaper, and will do everything you want to do for a long time. I got my DX18 for $405 shipped. It was a Brand new in box gen1, mode 2, and it included a 9 channel Rx (without AS3X btw). The company is out of them now, but they took very good care of me. I had a slider go bad and they replaced it with another brand new one, which I then sent the broken one back to them (at their expense)...the only catch was that I agreed to give my CC#'s to them in the even I decided NOT to return their broken one back. This was a very fare deal. Parts for Chinese brand planes can be fleeting, so buy them when you can :) I followed the instructions for the flaps on my Turbojet 550, for the hinges, then I copied it for this plane. I THINK I did it right, but definitely won't pick that "hill to die on"... Mucilage is the type of glue I was using. It's a nuance of Chinese technical ...made from tree sap or some vodo witchcraft fluid...but it's excellent, and super cheap! These are links where I'd get some credit from your purchase (maybe a few cents...) Foam-Cure - amzn.to/2CUiLMP (Similar to Mucilage) UHU Por Styrofoam Glue - amzn.to/2CXrMVy (Similar to Mucilage) Small Mucilage... Keep in mind this is not a link where I'll get any credit :(hobbyking.com/en_us/clear-foam-glue-medium-cure-large-100ml.html?___store=en_us Glad you're into this project. If you can get this plane for yourself, you WILL love it. It flies wonderful. I hate when I get a simple and less cool looking plane that latches onto me and becomes a favorite, since it's nothing to write home about, in the looks department, but it flies SOOOOOOOOOOOO good. You'll get it, when you pry it from your local hobbyshop's death clinch :) Gotta go for now. Thanks sharing our experience!

I just slipped away for a few minutes to finish up replying to comments. I only occasionally do my KZbin comments on my phone, since the PC is so much faster for me. We've been getting behind the last few weeks with house and land stuff keeping us very busy. For one of our most recent projects, we're working on a bridge to cross a stream on our new land, and since we're heading out there later today to get some more work done. I want to keep caught up so people don't get annoyed with non-answers...KZbinrs that fail, forget their most important component, the audience!!! I hate when I ask a question and 3 years later there's still no answer. This was a commitment I made (to myself and my viewers) when I stated this whole KZbin thing. 1) I won't leave projects undone, at least without explanation...sometimes I crash them - LOL 2) I won't leave people hanging, waiting endlessly for reply to questions. I hate that! Plus, I'm just kinda that type of guy. It drives my wife crazy sometimes, but it's like any other character trait, good with the bad, you know... When I say I'll do something, I mean it - to a fault. Happy Fathers Day to You too!

I get that, I'm not always so good about getting back to people on social media, but I do have a reputation for helping people/following up almost to a fault... you don't know how many times I've heard something like, "why are you wasting your time on that, they wouldn't for you." I ended up searching your Mucilage and found that it's "fish glue." Yum! Any suggestions on where to look for used RC equipment? I don't spend much time on the forums so I don't have a good lay of the land WRT to used sales. Anyway, still curious how and with what equipment you're shooting these videos... Maybe I'll start shooting some of me building things. ;-) I buy stuff occasionally from your links (ordered the hinges you linked here this morning) but I can't imagine you see all that much from things like that but I guess it doesn't hurt... I'm hoping to sneek watching the next video in sometime today... huh... Monday...

Glad you enjoyed it! One this I would do differently, if I had it to do over...I would have use a slightly thicker wire from one side to the other. What Rx??? You'll need to know what channel is assigned for SAFE Select, if you have bound it with SAFE Select on. If you haven't, then the AS3X is always on. It is a great plane, and so fun to fly! Flaps are super easy, but just do a tape hinge, don't do Fowler flaps like I did, it was way overkill and didn't really help any, that I can tell...the additional drag from a tape hinge would be preferable on this floaty plane.

Big stupid new guy question, maybe I missed it but can I use the basic 7 ch transmitter that came with the RTF kit? (Spektrum DXS DSMX® 2.4GHz) Or do I need to upgrade transmitters for this flappy doo modification?
@BrianPhillipsRC2 жыл бұрын
I don't know for sure, since I haven't had the RTF offering, but I assume you'll have at least one channel that's "Free" on your setup, but you'll need to look at the Receiver inside. If there's an opened spot, plug in a servo (yes, you can just pull the RUDDER for example and move it over) then start flipping switches and see if the servo moves ;)

6 channels means that you aren't getting to channel 7 or channel 8...so you might be unable to do what you want to do, without either another Rx OR a new Tx... This might help you understand better... (In no particular order) 1) Rudder 2) Elevator 3) Throttle 4) Aileron 5) Gear 6) Aux 1 7) Aux 2 8) Aux 3

@@BrianPhillipsRC can i put the same reciver thats in the timber 1.5m in the apprentice and set it up like the timber? How would that work with the apprentice i think its the ar636 or something
@BrianPhillipsRC6 жыл бұрын
You CAN use the Rx, IF it actually came out of a Timber, but if you buy it new, you'll have to program it. Here's why... Since the Timber 1.5m comes with flaps stock, they're programmed in on the Gear Channel (If I remember right...you CAN get the manual from horizonhobby.com to confirm this thought), rather than the higher channels, like you'll be with the stock apprentice. HOWEVER... You will NOT be able to tap into SAFE Select, since I believe you can only assign it to a higher channel, or you would have to tie it to another function already being used, like Gear (flaps)...which is a crappy solution, if you ask me. If you want to make the upgrade to an AS636, you should seriously consider getting a USED DX8 or DX9, since you're not that far off from the cost of a USED one, just in buying that receiver... Good luck with your decision, I know it sucks to have to put plane money toward a "utility item" like a transmitter, but you will NOT regret it. I LOVE my DX18, and would replace it tomorrow if it failed, might even get a DX20 next.\

Brian, I have a question and I know you can help me, My Aprentice STS came with the receiver SPM4650C (same as the Carbon CUB) and the flight controller is SPMA 3230 (the one in the Carbon Cub is SPMA3230A), for the Carbon Cub was so easy to install the flaps, now I am doing for the Aprentice, but I am not able to find how to activate the channel 8 which is available in the flight controller at the Aprentice, I am using the NX10 Transmitter, could you please give me some directions, thanks.
@BrianPhillipsRC2 жыл бұрын
Firstly, plug in a servo to that port, then go into MONITOR MODE, then move switched to identify what controls what HIGH channels. Then when you see it move, you can make a MIX, since you may not be able to use the WING TYPE to setup flaps, since the RX is designed to be setup without flaps. This is easy to make happen, but you have to do some of the flap stuff manually. It's not hard, but it's gonna take some fiddling. Try these things and see if you can get it attached to a switch, then use the SERVO SETUP MENU To change the SPEED if you want it to move slow like the FLAP MODE would do. Then you have to figure out how to mix in some elevator down, if you so desire.

Brian, good point on the safe. I have the mini apprentice and there is no on/off switch on that one. Plug in the battery and its automatically on. How do you avoid that problem. Though I don't think anything ever went horribly wrong, but I will be testing this out next time I use it. thanks
@BrianPhillipsRC6 жыл бұрын
I think they've improved the arming process in the newer AR636 to prevent arming so that you can flip the plane over after hooking in the lipo, but this was an earlier SAFE Rx, before that feature existed. It was a "rookie" mistake, but something that shouldn't even be able to happen, if you ask me :)

Crashed more than a few times, but always managed to get it back in the air after some battle damage repair. :) It probably weighs a pound more due to glue and tape. A couple years ago I upgraded the motor and ESC. More than enough power! Just ordered a new fuselage and tail section. Hope to get several more years out of it. The stability makes for a great video platform. Also have skis and floats for it. All season flier! I've got video of some flights on my channel.

@BrianPhillipsRC6 жыл бұрын
You could cut them at either angle. Are you trying to make a fouler flap, or just a tight fold? I suggest you go for whatever yields the smallest gap, which would help you to "break" the plane more with full deployment. Hi. Great series. I will eventually try this on my Apprentice. I would have removed small pieces of decal where the hot glue was used to fasten the'rods to the flaps. @BrianPhillipsRC4 жыл бұрын
Outboard flapperons are not great, but they DO make an impact. I'd HIGHLY recommend doing inboard flaps, rather than flapperons. Flapperons not only cancel out the AS3X and/or SAFE on the "other" aileron (the one you have to disconnect and plug into Aux1 or 2...whatever the spare channel is) but they also will cause the plane to fly "hokey". NOW, if you were to day CROW (Spoilerons + Flaps) this would be really cool! If you can tolerate the work, do the flaps. The mod is about as easy as it can be, and you will thank me.

you mean with the RTF transmitter...not sure? You can do it without a DX18, you just need one additional channel, but a computerized transmitter is helpful for delaying the flap deployment and elevator mix to flaps...beyond that, you can probably do it on the stock transmitter if there's a switch to control the additional channel on the receiver. Just plug in a servo, and test it with your switches.

If you're going with two, I'd start with 9 gram, and upgrade if you have a failure...which I doubt you will. Make sure that the servo is pointed in line with the flaps when they're in the "regular" (NOT deployed) position. This will help to allow the servo pocket to hold the flaps tightly closed, then when you need to deploy the flaps, you can have the motor "working"... Do you get me? ...but yeah, 9 gram would be fine. I think I used a 9 gram for BOTH...

If I use TWO servos, I would actually just reverse the servo...which is easier said than done... You can also just place them in such a way that they operate in the same direction. This is a LOT easier. Sure you can use a servo signal reverser, but then it's just one more thing to fail, and one more thing to buy too! Good luck!
@fpvandgasrc43216 жыл бұрын
@@BrianPhillipsRC how would u reverse the servo.. on the transmitter?
@BrianPhillipsRC6 жыл бұрын
You can go into servo setup, or if you have a super simple transmitter, you may just have a dip switch to flip. BUT if you're using TWO servos, and you want them to "look symetrical", and this means one will run backwards while the other runs the correct direction, you'd have to use TWO separate channels...one to control the LEFT FLAP and the other to control the RIGHT FLAP....but I almost never do this, except when I'm using a super complex sailplane setup...

Brian Phillips, job well done. I added flaps the same way you did to a Dynam C-47, except I used the 3M Blenderm tape, I didn't think about using the Dynam hinges like what my Dynam Grand Cruiser had for the flaps, that also looks like the same hinges you're using. I used two 9 gram Freewing digital servos, one reverse and one standard on a y connecter. I'm also using the HobbyEagle A3 AP gyro stabilizer and Spektrum AR8000 RX with my DX7 Gen2 TX for the C-47, it made a heck of a difference in landings.
@BrianPhillipsRC6 жыл бұрын
I bet. I'd really like to get my hands on one of those C-47's...but they seem to be out everywhere. Where'd you pick yours up? Was it PNF or ARF???
@alanwylie89606 жыл бұрын
@@BrianPhillipsRC, I bought mine from General Hobby about four years ago as a RTF. I think MotionRC has them in stock and you'd also get free shipping, whereas, General Hobby doesn't offer free shipping over a certain amount. The C-47 is a great flying plane, but the first upgrades I done was with the motors, esc's, and I added a separate ubec, the Dynam motor shafts will bend easily just from the blades striking a clump of grass or anything. A excellent replacement brushless motors for the Dynam C-47 and Dynam Grand Cruiser are the Turnigy 2836-1100KV motors from Hobbyking, I also used the Hobbywing Skywalker 30A esc's, ZTW 10A UBEC, MAS 8×6×3 counter rotating props, and HobbyEagle A3 6-axis gyro stabilizer, with Spektrum RX and TX. As of lately, I've been buying and using more and more Lemon receivers from BuddyRC and the Admiral receivers that are made by Lemon from MotionRC. Horizon Hobby and Spektrum is out pricing their selves and the quality and selection in Spektrum products in my opinion are going downhill.

No problemo - if you're using a NEW receiver, we have NEW videos about this too, FYI - Dynam Sonic (plane sucked, but we show how to do it on an AR631) and we also setup Flapperons on the OMP Challenger too... BUT, if you want to do it STOCK on this plane, as an upgrade, I'd just do FLAPS. They're WAY better for the aerodynamic capabilities of this plane, and it's WAY easier to do it too ;) A few buck more (maybe $20-30) for servos and wires, but WELL worth it in the end!

Would be great if HH just put flaps on it to begin with. I know some will say yes it just makes it more complicated for beginner pilots etc... but its not like they would have to use it right away. Something they can gradually progress to use. I like the apprentice but its actually one of the reasons I've always hesitated on getting one. A plane that size I want flaps.
@BrianPhillipsRC4 жыл бұрын
I agree, but this plane is soooo good ;) You'll love it, even if you have other planes. This plane is such a blast to fly! The flaps are SUPER easy, and you shouldn't do the Fowler flaps like I did, just make a TAPE hinge, and it'll work even better!!! (Plus a lot easier)

Flap and LED's little Grasshopper here. You do this so much that you should consider making your self a set of wooden flap angle cutters Roulers, so you can cut more easily with a flap exactoknife blade or maybe something like this kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z2Wci4uwmsR9hdE or even better a one pass to cuts like this one, but DIY kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZOtl4uBfp5spbM you could probably make one that gets hot powered by a lipo battery
The second one... I think I saw that on The Silence of the Lambs???? LOL

Yep, you're right. I have no idea what I'm doing here.... I certainly haven't answered literally THOUSANDS of questions about adding flaps to any planes, and certainly nobody could ever figure out how to make this work with less than an 18 channel transmitter - that would be IMPOSSIBLE.

No, this plane floats FOR-EVER on approach...thus the flaps allow for steeper landing approaches, and shorter takeoffs. The flaps also add an element of fun, in that the already WIDE flight envelope, is increased even more! I also get board flying a plan with just 4-5 channels...and I LOVE takeoffs and landings. If you weren't already aware - Flaps and LED mods are kinda one of "my things".
