I think another really big piece of the puzzle with the Don’t Worry Darling drama is that the movie is about an extremely abusive relationship, which is clear from the trailers and some leaked parts of the script. There are 2 important branches of this story: 1. The fact that Florence Pugh was not comfortable filming and “method” acting these abusive scenes with an alleged abuser, Shia. The fact that Olivia Wilde didn’t back her up on this is really bad for Olivia. 2. Olivia Wilde has continuously talked in interviews about how this movie is about “good sex for women” and showing the female perspective on sex, while the movie has an abusive relationship at the center of it. There is nothing inherently wrong about making a movie centered around sex from a woman’s perspective OR centered around an abusive relationship (those stories deserve to be told too) but there IS something wrong with conflating good female sex in the context of abuse. All in all, this is bad for Olivia who has just been called out on her performative activism, like Claudine said.

It makes me uncomfortable when Claudia and Jackie call women’s actions “not feminist” when I’ve literally never heard them call themselves feminists, so it just feels like they’re making fun of feminists. Yes what Olivia Wilde did is bizarre and not very feminist of her, but the way Claudia and Jackie love to always go right to this joke, whenever they get the chance, makes me uncomfortable! They clearly have something against feminism, but I thought they don’t like to talk about politics? Feels very selective to me. It would be one thing if they said this once as a joke, but they are starting to say it a lot and it really pisses me off.
