These dogs are truly amazing. I honestly think they are even better than labs and goldens as family dogs. So gentle and loving with cats and small dogs if raised with them and wonderful with children.

Thank you for this excellent explanation of the English Setter. My wife and I adopted a 3 year old rescue from the Humane Society. We have been so impressed with her wonderful nature and surprised by her love of occasionally taking a dip in our small pond. Such a loving, great dog. There are challenges sometimes with her fear of loud noises, examples: noisy trucks, fire crackers, etc. She can pull a "Houdini" to get out of her harness should a loud bang occur. We use a double leash & harness combination when we go for walks. Love her, she is a great ambassador for the breed.

My sis, a vet tech, says its the decible level/tone of those noises which irritate the ear drums of these/many dogs

We had these dogs and they love the outdoors esp nosing around fields looking for game birds, rabbits, anything. Inside they are a great house pet, super affectionate, love children, playful, easy to train, and beautiful dogs, very graceful. They need exercise and grooming with a soft brush so their fur stays tangle free and luxurious.

I love my own English setter. He’s a truly remarkable and loving dog. His stubbornness might be a problem sometimes and he can’t stay for hours alone but overall he’s an amazing dog. I’ll never regret adopting him three years ago and he’s still doing the distance at 13 years old, almost 14!!

Amen. My setter was a gentle and friendly companion who never allowed anyone to forget that, yes in fact she was a member of the family, a picky eater too. Next time around, I am curious to see what will happen when I get two of them, so that one is never alone. My Sophie was never destructive, but I think long daytime hours were hard on her. Or maybe I will just wait until I retire.

I am currently trying to help homeless settters in Montenegro where people there are terrible to pets. Hunters dump them and they starve on the streets. Can these dogs survive out in the elements?? I’m worried
