Effective mass of electron in general represents the mass of electron in a particular field....in crystals it the crystal field offered by the arrangement of atoms.....the crystal potential or field can be altered by doping with appropriate elements.....so that the crystal potential vary and accordingly the effective mass of electron. If effective mass is increased means more localisation of electron.....and mobility is decreased. Similarly if effective mass decreased means ...elections can easily move.....mobility is higher. ....u can thought as u r playing with a magnet and iron......u can vary the magnet with different strengths and see how ur iron block behaves for a fixed didtance.....it all about interaction of electron with the fields....hope it is helpful
