HI Tony thanks for the tutorial. I have had my EM-1 for a year and yet you still taught me plenty. I have been happily 'snapping' since the 60's and have had many cameras over the years. I love this camera and (almost) everything about it. Powerful, compact, water resistant and so adaptable. I'm taking the best pictures I ever did and having bags of fun too. Again, thanks for the tutorial - love your style, and of course, your missus is very easy on the eye too! Please keep it coming!

You are the only person I can listen to all the way through a video. I love my E-M1 and you manage to make sense of all the little things I get stuck with. Thank you for just getting on with it without waffling and for helping me out more than you'll ever know...

this guy, not only just helps with everything you need to know to understand the basic to moderate depth of functions on your camera but he talks to you like a human and doesn't act like a arrogant professional photographer talking too you like you should know every dial and setting. i cound listen for 12-14 hrs no problem and will definitely getting his books/dvds to understand more about how my camera works

A comprehensive and well thought out primer on the OM-D E-M1. Small details like dealing with the rear (main) control wheel first and then the front (secondary) wheel second, while running through menu options, helps in associating the position of the dials with the placement of the on-screen options. Well done!

Another great thing about the E-M1 is with a cheap $30. adapter you can use all of the superb 4/3 lenses from the defunct Olympus DSLR system. These lenses are built like tanks and some are better than the best current m4/3 lenses. My fav is the 12-60 f2.8. Greater range and equal or better IQ than the 12-40 at 1/3 the price. The 50-200 f2.8 is also superb. You can't even get anything in that range in the current lens lineup and it's only about $300. on ebay.

Great video Tony. I know you can't cover everything (I'm sure you'd rather not post six hour tutorials) but wondered if you tried the Super Control Panel and the Live Composite mode? Andrew Hewitt My thoughts to Tony Northrup also. Overall, it took time and effort to present the video professionally and clearly so kudos on that. A few things that I thought might have been better to emphasise (although they might not have fit into the syllabus of the books) 1. Tony uses the Point and Shoot style menu a lot in this video. Olympus has two menus - the menu in the form of the vertical strip on the RHS (Point and Shoot Style Menu) which they chose so that people who migrated from those cameras would feel at home - and the Super Control Panel - which to many veterans, is less confusing because it is in-your-face and shows you not just the menu but the status of of the settings - the OM-D series makes effort to offer this SCP as a preferred alternative. 2. Tony talks about a wired remote control for Bulb etc... That's about an old an idea as the PC Flash Sync port - most people for long exposure, intervalometer, timer etc... nowadays use the OM-D built in facilities - the camera's nifty and small, carrying a wired remote control isn't as cool or vital anymore. 3. It's hard to decide what's icing on the cake vs a serious feature so you can't speak about every feature. But it's worth discussing Live Time and Live Composite - they're so integral to the Olympus way nowadays. 4. In discussing raw software like free Picasa or a paid one, it's worthwhile mentioning Olympus Viewer 3 that is also free and has been much admired in its ability to produce really good JPEGs and TIFFs from Olympus raw files - albeit, a bit slow in rendering.

As a fan of the 4/3 format, and user of the E-M1, your video offered the chance to learn about the camera. I did, thanks. There is one point of disagreement. The USB port has a couple of important uses. It is the only way (that I know of) to update the firmware, and connecting a remote trigger (which is covered in the video later on). Because this occurs early in the video, it jaundiced my opinion about what I might learn, until the later stages where insights into the various menu options provided real value. rdv

I might have missed it, but I feel you didn't cover the thumb switch that swaps between settings that the 2 main dials control - in A mode, which I love to use too, the main thumb dial does aperture, and the forward index finder dial does exposure comp. But if you flick the switch under the mode dial down from 1 to 2, the thumb dial now does white balance, and the forward dial does ISO adjustment, which is considerably faster to change than going through the menu! (again, sorry if you did point this out and I missed it!)

Most helpful overall tutorial and well explained. Are your video books updated recently including for the new firmware? Really interested in your view for someone like me who had moved (from sony as it happens) from the original M5 to the M1 and has a few excellent olympus lenses. But also the canon 5d Mark II with excellent glass. Given things coming out soon - like the Mk IV; the M1 II; the GH5, I am keen to assess what might be the optimal configuration to make best use of my existing investments but build on them for video in particular, wildlife, pet photography, corporate storytelling and youtube- amongst others.

Thanks a lot . . . about ready to buy a camera and the E-M1 is currently among the finalists along with the E-M5, the X-T2 and the 80d. Really wish the X-T2 had a touch screen, it would be a buy it today otherwise! The only thing holding me back from the E-M1 is the price - I can afford it but sheez (2 freakin grand!), am I that serious about photography and thus the E-M5 in the mix? Right now i only have the 20mm prime but i kinda miss the zoom lens of my previous camera and i've had my eyes on the 12-40 pro lens. You mentioned in the video that it was overpriced at 1000$ but i managed to find it for about 500$ in my country new. would you still say that its overpriced at that pricepoint or should i be looking at other lenses?

Fantastic video- incredibly helpful! You mention scrolling down the screen to change to shooting in Raw . While I can do that with the super control screen (or through the menu after much scrolling)just fine, what I find when I try to do it in the open screen on the monitor with the functions down the side, that pressing up and down just makes the AF grid come up rather than moving through the functions. What am I doing wrong to make that happen and constantly keep coming up? Many thanks!

Hi Tony, thanks for all the great videos including this one. Q: 1. Why the 20mm 1.7 Panasonic over the Oly 12mm 2.0 or Oly 25mm 1.8, besides price? 2. Is the 20mm Pan sharper than the 12-40 pro? 3. What would you keep the Noise Reduction and Noise Filter setting on this camera? Also what setting for the IBIS? Thank you for your time.

Great job Tony. I have just one question and that's related to video. I'm used to cameras with zebra stripes that show precisely where in the frame there are areas of overexposure. This camera doesn't seem to have it (or even the newer Mark 2). Am I missing something here? Seeing the precise areas where the video is overexposed is very useful in determining if you want to control that area with exposure compensation or if a bit of overexposure in an unimportant area can be ignored.

Thanks from another grateful E-M1 user. You are my favorite teacher, clear & concise. Question: You said LOW ISO has less dynamic range. I would think it's just the opposite. Generally the lower the ISO the less noise & greater DR, right?
@duecky
@duecky 7 жыл бұрын
George Stone 'low iso' is not native iso. It is iso 200 and overexposed one stop by the camera. You lose some dynamic range if you use 'low iso'-mode. But generally you are right: lower iso has less noise and more dynamic range.

Hi, I've just bought the EM1, and have been worrying about whether I am up to the challenge! Your excellent video has put my mind at rest, I think I'll be OK! I am also looking at buying a telephoto lens for wildlife photography. I would be interested in your views. I am looking at the Panasonic 100-300 as it is very lightweight and I would be hoping to handhold the camera most of the time. I am also looking at the new 100-400 Leica lensed telephoto from Panasonic, but it's very expensive and considerably heavier. What are your thoughts on this I wonder? Thank you, great video.

Hi Tony, I'm considering a new E-M1 with the 45 1.8 or a used D610 with an 85 1.8. Over here they're about the same price. Which would you get? Tony, glad you included Olympus but not very informative… yes we know the camera has these features like every other camera. Would have been far better to discuss AF customization for still vs video (no mention at all of how af zones affect performance, recommendation about sensitivity, speed, etc), nothing at all about color profiles and customization of hue, highlight rolloff, etc). I could go on…

I'm stuck on the shutter priority lesson because even though I've turned the top dial to S when I try to use the back dial to adjust the shutter speeds nothing changes. It's as if the camera is still in Aperture priority mode except on the screen it says S. Is there another chapter of your tutorials that I can go to to do a correctional set up of this camera? Thank you 😃

Thank you Tony for your valuable presentation of EM-1. Just bought recently on sale (55% off the current price, with 12-50 mm) Truly this small machine, which the looks like a "transformer robot" is full packed with hi tech features, perhaps more than other competitors. It will bring out the best artist in you. Never thought I would have this unit because it was expensive then at the time it was launched. I would benefit to have the Olympus 17mm 1.7 rather than the 20mm 1.7 II, since Oly lens is engineered designed with the body? Would like to hear your thoughts and appreciate. Thanks once again. Regards to Chelsea! Wholesome couple!

Great video. I was curious if you had an opinion on the 60" Dolica GX600B200 vs the 65" GX650B204?

Benjamin Peterson Get the bigger one if you're taller and you're not trying to cram it in a suitcase. I hate crouching over a tripod, though I do use shorter tripods for travel...

Noticed how lacklustre the focus peaking was, due to lack of colours, thank god the new firmware has 4 colours to choose from now!

Hi tony, I use an em1 mark1 with all olympus m43 lenses, should I be worried or should I be doing a lens calibration, since to my knowledge this camera uses caf.

Hi, Can you please tell me why is there no back button focus section like on the Panasonic GH4? Does the backbutton setting lack in some way that makes it less usable on this camera? Thanks

Hi Tony, I'm considering getting the Rokinon 12mm F/2 lens for Micro Four Thirds. My question is, being a fully manual lens, will it activate the focus aids on the OMDs given it has no electrical connections to the camera (seeing as the focus aids normally only activate when you turn the focus ring).

saaaaaad It won't automatically activate them, but you can assign a function button to magnify and start it manually.

Hi Tony, when I try to focus my camera, my E-M1 does not allow me to do a half-press when in iAuto mode. How do I change this to allow me to do this? Also, I am trying to select C-AF mode, however, when I press the AF button, in P Mode, it only allows me to select MF and no other option (they are all grey)? - How do I change this to select C-AF? Kind regards, Aaron
