Just found this. I have been a fan of EST when my friend from Sweden gave me several early cds Esbjorn had personally given him to promote his band abroad in the U.S.A. Wow, amazing that one of the strings on the Steinway sounds like it broke and Esbjorn just works with it in beautifully into his solo section. Great music.

Please everyone who doesn't like it show some respect to these great musicians who work their ass off to bring joy to us. Just say you don't like it is ok! You don't have to tell me what it sounds like to you. I'm not really interested. You can honor things despite the fact you don't like them.

I'd like to think this really sums up how Pat Metheny feels about Jazz. This piece demonstrates his perspective very well that Jazz today should be the kind of music that transcends us to a higher level. It really brings us to an awareness of the here and now but with an ability to transcend the listener, (which he is) and the musician(s), (which he also is) beyond what is to what can be. That kind of positivity runs through all Pat's music, and this trio understands this as well. I wish I'd heard of this trio before the passing of Svenson.

I fully agree that it's the sound ruining it, not WHAT Pat plays. E.S.T. is undoubtedly great anyway and would most likely have become one of the (if not "the") most influential contemporary jazz bands, while Pat's legend, already. Even though I, personally, don't like Pat too much (inspite of seeing him live for several times), it's just one great song, great version, great arrangement, great improvisation, great everything. There's nothing more to do than just listening.

I would definitely have prefered a more "guitar-like tone" from Petheny, but the playing is great for sure. Imagine for instance, David Gilmour playing the guitar parts. :) Well, this is amazing, I love the string part in the middle, love the energy of the entire piece.

wasnt the piano actually ruined? like nine minutes in you can hear one of the strings is broken, lol the balls on this guy to do that to a steinway ;D

I Love JAZZ but what is the problem with the metal bands and styles?? I would like to talk to the "metal-hater": if you don't like metal you don't like Beethoven cause he's the father of metal. The metal is just a music influenced by jazz blues and classic so... Listen the very good bands of metal musioc and we will talk after that x) You will change your mind about metal
@armensog8710 жыл бұрын
Marilyn Manson lol dude. I've played metal for ages, its not about the genre. Im saying that ppl who are uncomfortable with Pat's psychedelic fills should not be bullshitting others, and probly have no clue what kind of music these guys make, so they should take gothic metal stuff filled with swedish piano only, and which is much more square and easier to assimilate.

Why does the piano sound like an e. grand ? very low attack or something ?
@LucasFerreira-hy4sn3 жыл бұрын
Maybe Because the guitar was playing along with it and the effects makes it sound kinda synthy.
@PureToneAmps12 жыл бұрын
I believe it's the sound and not the phrasing. I like what he plays but not the sound. Many guitar players are addicted to guitar synths though, especially jazz players. I do not like it either but lets keep the good thing which is their inspiration.
@SyncopatedProgress12 жыл бұрын
I think I agree. It's not that Metheny is a bad player or lacks taste but this song is best with raw and powerful acoustic instruments. I guess I've always been somewhat allergic to MIDI and anything that's trying (and failing) to make the instrument sound like something it's not.
@lordohnehelm9 жыл бұрын
not a good live version :( sounds way better on cd. and no, it hasnt to be better on cd, there are often live performances which are way better than their cd pendants

I like Pat i love EST. But on this for me he ruined it . Dodge the dodo is my favourite from EST. He ruined the whole 2ND part and ending. I would prefer a smooth jazz guitar . George benson on this would have killed it !
@armandopace855910 жыл бұрын
Pat is awesome on this, but I still don't understand why he's tryin to make sound his guitar like a trumpet.
@brianmi4010 жыл бұрын
If for no other reason than it would be so sad if guitarists only played their guitar with a strictly guitar sound. Pat being an innovator and early adopter of the guitar synth makes total sense for his style of music.
@tribeny9010 жыл бұрын
For You it is a sound of trumpet. In fact this is one of kind sound of Pat Metheny. I'm sure that You can hear the difference.
@armandopace855910 жыл бұрын
Pat declared that his first love was a trumpet. So i said so, that he try to make his guitar sound like a trumpet. I quitely like that sound, it's not so bad. But i fairly think in the integrity of the isrrument itself.
@brianmi4010 жыл бұрын
Also keep in mind you can play things on a guitar with a trumpet like sound that you could NEVER play on a trumpet, starting with the fact that a trumpet can play only a single note at a time... So this applies to any horn sound played by a MIDI guitar (or keyboard), it lets artists innovate in ways previously not possible. Something that's been a hallmark of late 20th and 21st century music...
@armandopace855910 жыл бұрын
I'm not critizise him . I'm just fiureing out that guitar, such like instrument itself, it's limited in terms of sound. I think the jazz would be k ly played with horns instruments because the emohezises moay the emotions of the player bu breathing in it with all the passion the musicians have. So i think that Pat knows it and he tried with this sound to apply more consistence to his guitar sound. And I appriciated it!
@ey3tech588 жыл бұрын
I mean he doesnt add anything to the song he mostly make it worst in the best part . i Feel like it's me playing doing my jam on it . The extra violin are good but not pat metheny , so stop saying it's better with him
