Steve, Pat, and Sco were at Berklee when I was there. Steve was the nicest guy you could ever meet. Pat practiced all the time. I played in a few ensemble bands with Sco. He was good, but over the course of three years he turned into a monster player. Gee, practice really does pay off.

@@BorysPomianek "I am" no gynecologist ( but "I am" happy to take a look) Freud's the "I AM" is the Ego...yet... I AM going to have to disagree with your "certainty" (Freud is problematic and being discredited via modern brain sciences) Ego is Freudian .. "sense of self ...measuring sense of self" (Superego... the sense of measuring self to the collective) ... but Id say ALL these players are closer to pure ID in the Freudian sense (music as BASE NEED .. to speak (Language) your statement "seems to infer" there was no consciousness before Freud's Ego ? ) maybe snort some Angle Dust.. or take some .. LSD25 ... and then tell me if you can find EGO (out of body experience) and one is surely conscious) .. all said.. in this situation.. no doubt Ego IS present (as the I AM...IS the JAZZ statement "step up and show us what you've got " ...and perform to an audience (as superego) but this music is so "all consuming" (no time for mirroring self)... so maybe EGO is rendered irrelevant ? (via their skilled discipline) I think that is probably what the fellow above sees (grace under fire) they don't need to care.or measure.. because they are soooo immersed via SENSE of Sound (EARS).. not sense of self.. (the sound of the whole) its about delivering the best performance of the song (which is surely Ego driven) Dylan's newer stuff EGOS (EveryGrainOfSand).. sort of demolishes concepts of "self importance" (we mostly see EGO as Trumped up Self Importance) hence I essentially agree with you.. how can sense of self not be present ? Eckhart Tolle.. has some VERY interesting things to say about "awareness" (consciousness) as being external to our physical (spiritual beings) he makes a pretty damn convincing case of structural entropy (ALL thoughts as essentially constructs (zero substance) ... but yeah.. the phenomenon of "out of body experiences" (drugs or near death exp etc) sort of refutes your original statement...the first statement appears true.. but your conclusion..(because..) maybe not ? this text block is ALL EGO driven (ie look how smart and interesting I AM) ie.. all attention seekers are egoists..

John Scofield is an interesting player. I saw him at the 1986 JVC Jazz Festival in Newport RI as part of a multi lineup. Always mixing angular and dissonant lyricism with blues and funk. I'm sure he plays a lot of whole tone and diminished scales and loves to obscure the underlying harmonies with departure after departure. A great introduction to him is to check out Jaco Pastorius, Kendwood Dennard and John Scofield playing the Jaco blues, "The Chicken" on a 1985 instructional video for aspiring bassists. Jaco sounds the most adherent to melody and harmony! I've always loved Pat Metheny and saw him live in Lowell MA 1989. He's fully capable of playing angular and outside like Scofield. Song X with Ornette Coleman. I would like to listen to more Scofield and decide how much I like him. I like him and what I hear. It's an acquired taste- active listening. Listening to the Chicken with Jaco is a great place to start.
