I totally get what you mean, Ana. We have Tank’s Cactus soil readily available over here in AZ and it’s a mixture of mainly coconut chips and pumice with added compost and other amenities but it seems to dry a bit too fast. I started amending it with Tank’s potting mix which has more organic material so it doesn’t dry out as fast. So far, the cacti don’t seem to mind!
@CactusCaffeine

Yes, a chunky mixture don’t do well for me. I need some finer materials that will absorb water fast.

When the owner was talking about watering after fertilizing I believe he was talking about the granular fertilizer that you sprinkle onto the soil. I don't think he was talking about using water-diluted fertilizer and then watering again with regular water on top of that. I'm just not a fan of the either monstrose or crested form at all.

Seal the terracotta pots to stop absorption of water by painting the inside using pot sealant or some other type of sealant that can stick to the pots. Chances are normal concrete blocks or kiln fired building bricks have sealant paint available & should do the the same job for your pots if a pot sealant isn't available.There maybe a sealing coated building paper that could work. You may also as a test run use a plastic bag or some other type of plastic that can retain water & place cactus inside of it (this would require testing with cuttings & not a mother plant in case the plastic leeches chemicals that may damage the plant. Food grade plastic will be fine). I use empty 3kg cat biscuit bags (they're a lined twin paper with a waxy or plastic'y coating on the outside) inside large water cooler bottles & they seem ok so far. Variety's of Red orchid,opuntia & san pedro looking cactus have been this way for 3 years now with no issues. Another option is plastic pots inside the terra's but the plastic pots sit below a ways from lip of the terra to allow soil to cover it so it can't be seen. That last one would be good when it came to re-potting as it will be easy to remove

Sudden change in the environment condition will usually cause some cactus to secrete a black substance. They usually heal by themselves but the scar will be permanent. If spotting persists, you may try spraying it with fungicide.
