Now this is far more visually interesting, and less confusing than what we got back in the 80s.

did they develop it in time for Xmas 83?
@TrevorBarnhill-g9u2 ай бұрын
If this is the one we would've gotten in the 1980s, instead of being one of the worst Atari and video games of all times, everyone would've said that it's one of the best Atari has done and that they knocked it out of the park.

whoah you went very far with this one!!! I gotta stand up and clap to that!!!! love the retro graphics!!!!! long live the Atari 2600!!! and finally ET got some love :D - I am also making Atari 2600 inspired games for my own fun using clickteam fusion 2.5!

Thanx for the claps :) I started out wanting to make the flying bike level and ended up with 6 levels. Happy programming on your own projects.
@AloanMoreira1 Жыл бұрын
@@jeffhutchinson9867 Great to know! Who knows maybe the developer did not include the bike level on the original because Atari didn´t give him ample dev time, but was rushing him, which was common back when they were in the money (greetyness)

This is nothing like the original Atari ET game where you spend 99% of your time at the bottom of a hole.
@KrGsMrNKusinagi05 ай бұрын
sounds like every tinder date
@mmille105 ай бұрын
So many people couldn't figure out how to get out, including me for the longest time. So many times, I'd see a game with ET at the bottom of a hole, because someone left him there. I can't remember how I came to know it, but you were supposed to stretch your neck, and then you'd levitate out. The author said that was a very common complaint, and it was a problem of collision detection, that people thought you wouldn't fall into a hole unless you stepped in it with your feet, but since it was a 2D game, you could fall into a hole if you "hit it" with your head. This confused people.

If it doesn’t work on the Atari 2600, it’s an illegitimate remake anyway.

The E.T. house where Elliot lived up on the hill was spot on 👍
@jeffhutchinson98675 ай бұрын
The house exterior image is grabbed from the film and downscaled then touched up by hand. Also the flying bike sprite was taken from the movie poster and downscaled as well.

This looks really cool. It would probably have been too big to fit on an OG Atari, but it definitely has the right feel
@jeffhutchinson98676 ай бұрын
Thx for the comment. My aim was to produce the game i wanted, not the one we got, at the time. I agree it would be unlikely something of this scope would run on real hardware. I usually build these things using Unity.
@Mrshoujo6 ай бұрын
A 32K bank switched ROM might be able to do this.
@Badspot6 ай бұрын
@@Mrshoujo There's a bunch of things here that I don't think are possible on the 2600. Even with all the ROM in the world, you can't make the 2600 display an arbitrary background using all colors like in the house section. Rendering the moon and cloud background is possible using the player sprites, but there would be nothing left to render gameplay on top of it. Same with the scrolling trees - it might be possible with massive flickering but it would still be a challenge. It would require both player sprites just to render the bike character. It's fun though, and no reason you can't cheat a little when making a fan game like this.

This is exactly how E.T. (Atari) should have looked and played. It might have stood a chance if it had been released for the Atari 400 computer instead of the 2600 console in 1982.

A glimpse into the multiverse!
@holdingpattern2456 ай бұрын
The original Atari game has an interesting idea: each spot on the map has a power which is shown at the top of the screen, and you use that power by going to that spot and pressing the fire button. But it was made in slightly less than a single month, so the game barely works and most people can't even figure out what's going on in it.
@jeffhutchinson98676 ай бұрын
It was also mostly holes, in which to fall.
@holdingpattern2456 ай бұрын
@@jeffhutchinson9867 The holes contain the phone parts which you need to win the game. One of the powers reveals which holes contain phone parts on the current screen. Inside of the holes, the only power is levitating out of the hole, except for one spot with a dead flower that you can bring back to life. The main problem with the holes is that they have broken collision, sometimes people immediately fall in a hole when they enter a new screen, and sometimes people get stuck in a loop where they escape a hole and immediately fall back in, but with some work it could have been fixed.
