Drew Barrynore did an amazing job. As a child during filming, she actually believed E.T. was real. She would talk to him during breaks, and the director had someone there to make sure E.T. would respond. She would try to dress E.T. because it was cold on set. Any scenes where E.T. was in bad shape, she wasn't allowed to see E.T. I appreciate you two doing this movie.

E.T. started walking towards the kid in the Yoda costume because ET species are part of the Star Wars universe. They have a cameo in a scene of Episode 1. So it was a "familiar face" so to speak. Both movies done by Spielberg.

ET didn't really die, he just went into a coma so deep the doctors couldn't detect a heartbeat or brainwaves. I guess it was a reflex once he was so sick, so he could concentrate on just healing himself & reach his mind out to the people on his ship & confirm they got his message he was alive & to meet at the same spot. To do all that he had to temporarily cut off his empathic link to Elliot too. They never confirm if his illness was completely due to depression or if he was reacting to something in the environment & his homesickness made it worse, but it seems his body got too far out of whack & he needed a deep rest to reboot & he couldn't do that while connected to Elliot. Speaking of Elliot, they don't say it out loud in the movie, I think there's just a fraction of a second glance at the mailbox, but the writer made his family's last name start with a T, so his initials are E.T. as an inside joke.😂

@DateNiteReactions The entire objective for ET and his crew was to collect samples of organic life on Earth - ET went exploring - got left behind. The story we see with Elliot up to the ship coming back, ET was given flowers from Gertie, the little sister, he walked up the ramp with the flowers, his objective was completed, he got his sample of organic life on Earth. That is ET's objective to collect organic life and when he was rescued, he completed his objective. The spaceship was full of organic stuff and plants and such. It takes a few watches to see it - everyone is involved with the story of Elliot. ET got sick because he was homesick and it got worse, then when he knew they were coming back, he sprung back to life!

Great information. however, I always assumed that E.T. couldn't handle this planet's atmospheric conditions, and the further the space craft got away from the planet, the worse his condition got.
@magicninja318 ай бұрын
@mikeshoe74 E.T.'s species is a super organism...but it isn't a hive-mind...it's more like a hive heart or hive-soul...their life force is connected...you see this in the very first scene when they all light up at the same time. When they leave he is cut off from that hive...so he has to latch onto another being...Elliot...but it isn't the same...he needs his people...literally..to survive...when they 'get back in range' he feels better.
@GregBreden6 ай бұрын
@FunnyCrazyProduction That's exactly what I thought when I saw it in 1982 and still do. He got sick when he thought they weren't coming back. Today I assume their ship was pretty fast to be able to travel to different planets to collect all those samples. Bearing in mind the signal that ET and Elliott were sending was radio waves so it took time to get to them. For example in a day and a half the signal would have travelled 24 billion miles. Just saying for the sake of argument that it took half a day for the ship to come back to arrive 2 nights after the signal was sent, that's damn fast considering Voyager 2 is 12 billion miles away right now and that launched in 1977. Who can say the exact timings involved and where the ship was in between but even as a kid in 1982 I was thinking something like that. It made perfect sense. By the way, plants and plant life was a focus because Spielberg thought of ET as a plant based life form. I've always adored this film.

E.T. and Elliot had a symbiotic connection (biological interaction between distinct organisms). When E.T. went into torpor or sedation, then connection between them separated, Elliot's vital stats normalized. E.T.'s health is determined by the condition of the plant. The scientists and medical experts had to wear hazmat suits and sterile scrubs in order to keep the work area uncompromised. They tried to avoid cross-contamination in order to analyze tissue samples. I'm certain that they were able to secure organic matter to study later even though they let E.T. return home.

As strange as it sounds, the Mexico exchange you missed was actually a socio-culturally important landmark in US history. ET was apparently the first major movie depicting a divorced family. Divorce was still a very touchy subject in America and was hardly mentioned, much less shown, in any movie. Kramer vs. Kramer, the first grown-up movie dealing with divorce head-on, had only been released a year or two earlier. So Spielberg's decision to portray a troubled "broken home" in a movie, and a children's movie to boot (where intact happy families or single parent widowers was de rigeur) was very daring. It was criticized at the time for "normalizing" divorce and family break-ups. But it was a conscious decision. The American family landscape had changed rapidly in the 1970s, and children living in divorced families was not a rarity anymore. Spielberg felt such kids needed a movie where they could see a home life they could identify with.

The 80s were not reckless, perverse and unsupervised as most reactors assume. It takes one who thinks it to see it that way. Parents who raised their children knew the time when to raise an adult. Look at childrens & teens youtube channels today.

If you're wondering why they didn't show all the adult faces (Except for Elliot's mom) until the house gets invaded and quarantined? Steven Spielberg (Director) wanted this movie to take place through a kid's perspective. And to a little kid's POV, all the adults are villains and they don't have feelings, so we shouldn't see their faces.

I waited for hours at the theater to see this. And this movie was epic fo its time we didnt have any movies other than star wars to compare. But we all thought this a movie before its time. The plant was healed by ET and when it started to die E. T started to die and when ET heeled Elliot felt his pain. Because that's when he healed him. That's what gave him the feeling from then on.
