I just finally got mine working to the point where I could actually ride it for real. I replaced a GX Eagle cassette with the eThirteen TRS+ 12 speed cassette, X.0 Eagle shifter & derailleur, and whatever SRAM 12 Speed chain came on my 2018 Canyon Strive CF 8.0. With the SRAM chain I would not ride with this cassette beyond testing it out on the street in my neighborhood. In the higher gears it skipped harshly under load. Crank on the pedals and the teeth on the larger cog would catch the chain, lift it, and drop it back onto the smaller cog you were indexed to, no matter how much adjustment you made to cable tension...the B screw was also set to the SRAM specs with their guide. Watching some you tube videos showing the same thing in the 11 speed version were solved with a 12 speed chain that was narrower. Turned out, eThriteen recommends a YBN chain...a ha! YBN chains are narrower than their competitors in both 11 and 12 speed, and have used/compared them before. Seems eThriteen, with their recommendation, knows about this. Problem solved and it works perfectly. The narrower YBN chain also about 95% solves the problem of the chain dropping off the large cog when backpedaling, which wouldn’t have been a deal breaker as it took about a revolution to a revolution and a half to drop it, which you would never do when actually riding. Now it usually doesn’t drop at all and on the occasion it dos it takes a lot to drop it. Bottom line, you may not have luck with this cassette without switching to the YBN chain eThriteen recommends. It’s possible a higher level SRAM chain would work, but I didn’t try.

I’ve been running the 11sp version of this for about 2 years now, I removed it from my mountain bike and it’s on my gravel grinder now. Biggest drawback is that the aluminum cogs wear out quickly (within about 1000 miles). Luckily when that happens you can replace just that portion for much cheaper than a whole new cassette. Big plus over getting an entire new cassette!

I haven't been terribly impressed with my GX cassette (heavy, seemed to wear quickly), but the X01 and XX1 cassettes are ludicrously expensive. I've heard they last ages, but I'm going to try the TRS+ next time around. Only downside is that there are 2 large aluminum cogs to wear out on the E13 vs. just the granny on the SRAM - hopefully that doesn't mean shorter overall cassette life.

After 3 months, the cassette wasnt as straight as it was, some teeth were messed up a lot, hard to stay on the same gear without skipping on the littles ones and impossible to pedal backward...I eventuality went on Sram Eagle instead. I'm open to ride one again in the future but need to hear good commentary on the long run before

This is similar to my experience on my Jeffsy. The TRS 11 speed started out great but it wears down really quickly over time. It just doesn't have the longevity I'd expect from something that expensive. I'm going to just take the weight penalty and change to Eagle when the time comes.

I’m currently using the eThirteen TRS plus 12 speed cassette. I have it paired with XO1 cranks, chain, and a 32 tooth oval chain ring. The gear range is great, shifts are precise and quiet. I Love the cost and weight savings. It definitely helps to have two chain whips to remove the cassette as stated in the instructions, otherwise it can be a pain to take off. The new pinch bolt clamp design is an improvement from the old “nut” fastening system. I’ll be interested to see if the make a 12 spd TRS race version, like they do for their 11 spd cassettes. It would be great to have even more weight savings!
@jmvdigital6 жыл бұрын
FWIW, I'm moving away from e13 and the TRS cassette. I've ridden e13 TRS 11sp cassettes on three bikes now over the last two years, through multiple design updates from e13. I also got my buddy riding on an e13. Yes, the range, weight savings, and price are nice. The downside for me has been threefold: 1) It's very finicky with shifting sometimes (for no reason I can figure out) even with perfect adjustment. This is especially noticeable when shifting into the big 46t cog. Sometimes it just says "fuck you!" and the chain grenades down the cassette like 5 or 6 gears with some horrible noises and often causes a stoppage of riding. This happens on all four bikes (including my buddy's). 2) It tends to get noisy because of the split interface and apparently that plastic spacer between the two cassette halves (according to e13). It starts creaking and cracking and the only solution is to remove the cassette, clean and reinstall. Not overly difficult, but a pain. 3) I've have to bail on one ride because the inner cassette lock ring loosened, which loosened the entire cassette on the hub body. I was not able to fix this with trailside tools (no chain whip). Had to soft pedal it back to the car 10 miles (luckily was mostly flat XC at that point in the ride).
@juliodavidvega24076 жыл бұрын
I understand the improvement for 11-speed since Sram only has 10-42 but for 12-speed you will only save maybe $25 or $30. Cassette is $251 and after 1,000 miles you need another aluminum cog set for $100 ( i think its more expensive) leaving you with ~$350 of cassette in 1,000 miles. I have the XO1 eagle with 1,700 (only two chains so far) miles and that thing will keep riding way over the 2,000 miles. Eagle is $385 and E-thirteen will end up close to $355 or more depending on the price for the aluminum cog set.

Julio David Vega I made the change to it from a GX Eagle mainly for the smaller granny cog vs. the 50 tooth on the SRAM. Less chain, a bit straighter chain-line, smaller front ring for a little less weight and clearance.

I've heard some bad stuff about the TRS 11 speed cassettes. Like too much noise or aluminum gears folding over. People do struggle with them. E13 has made several changes since they first started producing these cassettes, including batch by batch changes that might affect your install mattering on your XD driver. Both my bike shop and I COULD NOT install my 11 speed E13 cassette I purchased. The carrier (the first three aluminum cogs) were too tight to fit my XD driver. I had weeks of email messages to E13 that did nothing to help the situation because of one extremely unhelpful customer service representative. Once I called E13, and talked to a different person, the problem was solved in just a few days at no further cost to me. I couldn't believe how quickly my situation changed. I've had a few rides on it and its great. I'm totally happy with it but I still do have my worries. If you look at the numbers, it's hard to not be happy. My 11 speed GX derailleur is way cheaper than an XX1 Eagle derailleur and comes in at the same weight. This E13 cassette is 40 grams lighter than an XX1 Eagle cassette and some how still has more range. Although, the nine tooth is kind of silly. E13 made this right for me by giving me $130 worth of product to fix my issue but if you still have worries and your feeling adventurous, Garbaruk also makes a light weight expanded range 11 speed cassette.
@liamwoods53536 жыл бұрын
A lot of the tolerance issues have to do with the xD driver from the hub manufacturer. Some are slightly off from the intended spec and are larger or smaller, making installation hard creaking if its small. Hope XD drivers need a shim as theirs are too small...

Hi. I have a Specialized Camber comp 27.5 alloy. It runs a Sram GX 11 speed, 11 to 42t cassette. A Raceface 28t chainring, not sure if that is standard or not, as 32t seems to be the popular chainring, so I hear! I am thinking of replacing the old cassette with an e*thirteen TRS+. As it is an 11 speed, it is supposedly able to be good replacement for the old one without having to change the derailleur. Not that I mind putting on a new one, I just don't see the point of replacing one that is working so well. The only real con I have read, is they are less durable than the Sram cassettes? Also not as smooth. For me the plus is a wider range, with a 9 to 46t set. Coupled with the 28t chainring. The fact that I ride with a lot of Ebikes, has me falling a little short on the climbs. Here in Australia there are no restrictions on ebikes in parks like there. I personally don't have a problem riding with them, but the edge in climbing would be an advantage!

I've been mulling this cassette thing in my mind for a few days now.... everything comes down to gear ratios. So, if you're a pro with high VO2 pumping a consistent 300+ watts capacity and racing... you're not looking for stump pulling ratios like me whose a Clydesdale size rider and the equivalent of watching a loaded semi-truck going up over the Grapevine here in CA. Back in 1991 at Crested Butte Fat Tire Bike festival(I was the innovator winner that year), I was sidelined because of a "double hernia", so I watched the Trials riders and got to know the guys of this company called Mtn. Tamer, and they had a 4th chainring to the crank... I put a 20 tooth to go with my 7sp 30 tooth cassette. Now I could ride Hell Hill without gassing :-] This gave me a 1:1.5 ratio for 26" , rolling distance 81". So, when I figure in the rolling distance of say 27.5, 86.4", I'm looking for a ratio of around 1:1.6 and 29ers 1:1.74. This Idea of 1x11 or 12 cassettes is really interesting. and Jeffs idea of going to smaller crank rings to loose weight, but to work into the right gear ratio for the individual. That was my comment... now, could a person say, put a Box 2 derailleur on a 1x12 cassette and utilize a 12sp shifter? the idea of a 9-46 and a oval 28 crank ring sounds interesting to me....

We have ridden these back to back. The 9t is a small cog and sure there is some more friction and efficiency loss in it. However, how often do you ride that gear? Dennis Al Palma E there’s no noticeable difference between 34-50 vs. 32-46 when riding...but, both being smaller on the TRS+ has some practical benefits.

Dennis Al Palma E “More teeth is a better ride” - how??? Do you understand gear range and gear ratios? 9-46 gives you more range than 10-50.

I had one and did not like it. You can notice your missing a 50 tooth when climbing some long steeps. I even dropped to a 28t upfront. And to install it is a bitch at first but after that its easy to remember how to take it on,and off because irs such a pain. And and gz eagle is about tbe same price. But a lot heavy for weight weenie! Lol

32x50 is still a lower gear than the 30x46. I am in my 50 tooth "A LOT" in my riding area. I'll stick to easier pedaling for the moment.
@tamasvarga676 жыл бұрын
Raivkka That was just an example, nothing stops anybody to run 28T then it’s lower than 32/50.

Why would you run a smaller granny gear than Eagle? It's not a road bike, you don't need that extra tooth on the top end and it completely defeats the purpose of that 12th gear. Just buy a GX cassette if you can't afford X01 or XX1
@krod126836 жыл бұрын
The gear spread on a cassette starts gradually. So the less you can go with the tooth count, the more linear the cassettes gear spread multiplies. So if you shift and want a smaller jump, it’ll feel like a smoother pedaling shift transition.

@@krod12683 that's fine, but again, it is really unnecessary for mountain biking where terrain changes rapidly. On a 1x the vast majority of people want the best climbing capability possible not a 2T progression of the cassette that ends in a gear ratio that was peak technology 8 years ago. The only major jump in the Eagle cassette is from 46-50, all the others are very gradual so why anyone would want to limit their bottom end and for a marginally more gradual transition is unusual.
@tamasvarga676 жыл бұрын
You need to look at the gear range not the size of the biggest cog. 9-46 is more than 10-50. You can run a smaller chainring (30 instead of 34) and you have the same (even lower) low end. GX Eagle cassette is ~120g heavier and the cassette is the perfect component to save some unsprung weight.
@karlfriedrich77586 жыл бұрын
@@tamasvarga67 That's true, but put the same 30T on the Eagle and you have an *even* lower ratio and the gear jumps should be less than a 34T too as well. The wear-out rate of these is also pretty poor, buying one X01 or XX1 cassette is justified when you need to replace this cassette after a season and is also going to make up the weight difference on GX vs this cassette.

Karl Walter Doesn’t matter which way you cut it this e13 has more range than Eagle. As for wear, have you tried it or just saying?

400€ for a cassette is just stupid. A 1-46 XT will cost about 60€....400€ for a piece of metal lol
