Amazing, this is truly a workout for the percussionists, it has a very complex structure, I wonder how Grubinger gets everything done without reading a score. Simply great.

Honestly, the only way to perform this is without a score. There's so many instrument changes all the that reading a score in a central place really isn't an option.

The rhythm inside this little man... I am speechless! If only I could play just one of those instruments as well as him, I would be a very happy amateur percussionist indeed!!

"Talking whilst playing the drum is not something unique. We can find it in traditional Indian percussion, and in jazz when musicians accompany their play with 'Sprechgesang'. This piece goes the opposite way: It begins with the percussionist speaking nonsensically, the emphasis on the rhythm, which he then passes on to his instrument. Like the pure, childish joy of repeating the same word in a different tune, the soloist teaches his instrument to speak until the drums start to talk themselves. Several poems form the basis; in the first two movements it are three poems by Sándor Weöres, and in the third movement it is a poem by Jayadeva. Each sentence has a more complex form than the one before. Rhythms form words, words form sentences, and sentences create a narrative." - Ann-yi Bingöl

It does not go the opposite way. If you know properly you indian music before learning to play the tabla you learn how to speak the rhythm and them you learn to play it on the tabla.

The conductor either looks respectably serious or so done with the drummer. I laughed so hard, but it also makes a lot sense, and the percussionist's skill is truly amazing.

Look at Vasily Petrenko's face at 21.36 minutes and you will see the conductor's joy! The fact that he conducted the orchestra so professionally and at the same time so sensitively during the performance speaks exclusively for his competence! The audience showed with their continuous applause that they appreciated the composition and performance and enjoyed them!

I just fixed up a citation for a book I just finished engaging regarding Williams Shakespeare and had to keep checking basic info. My puny citation project didn't even pale in comparison to the complexity presented here. Wow!

The Poems of a certain Sandor Weöres (first 3 movements) contain gibberish. The 4th movement, as far as I understand, is a more serious poem written by Jayadeva.
