This is a very, “German”, Brahms, something you just don’t hear much these days. The orchestra is to be commended for it’s dedication to the performance. The phrasing, the blend, THE INTONATION!! FLAWLESS!!

Well, it's not just German(y), it's Hamburg, Brahms' home town and you can actually see the sky and the water and feel the wind.😊

This was his "First"... can you discern how he longed to be worthy of that "Giant shadow" (Beethoven) that he feared and adored all his life? And yet.... how close he came to "HIM". I am sure Beethoven would have embraced Brahms with all his heart for this oevre. Brahms' four symphonies are in every fibre of me! Thank you and bless you JB for those gifts of yours forever!

Thematically speaking, 38:32-40:28 is to me the heart of this symphony.

Einfach wunderbar!

A very beautiful performance. Whenever I hear the NDR play this wonderful symphony, I am reminded of the transcendent 1951 performance conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler.

This symphony, especially the 4th movement, never fails to remind me Clint Eastwood (I am pretty sure it was CE) conducting the Brahms in front of Wehrmacht officers. (He and the whole orchestra were somehow captured by Germans. I don't remember the detail. I only remember the Brahms part.) I saw it when I was an early teen (?) sixty years ago. It was as good and dramatic as this performance. I want to watch that film again! Anyway, this one is of the finest performance of Brahm's 1st I heard.

@charliekim293911 ай бұрын
@@tomstarzeck7137 I think it was Charlton Heston - not Clint Eastwood. I remember his name was Lionel Evans. (Amazing that I still remember the character name.) Movie title? (Google, google, on the screen. What was that movie?) " Charlton Heston as Lionel Evans - Counterpoint (1967)" Happy New Year!

First note is already not together. The tempi are a kind of musical Valium. Like a slow motion version. Amazing musicianship.
Despite the impeccable performance of this orchestra, as I've remarked other occasions, I'm a slight bit disappointed with the somewhat plodding tempo (in the 1st set anyway) and particularly the lack of the repeat there. But let this not detract overmuch from the general high musicianship here. JAT
