my reaction to first part of explanation: "OOH" my reaction to second part of explanation "OHH" :)

The title includes alkynes in it. I understand the overall topic is both alkenes and alkynes, but this is misleading, as you don't mention alkynes once in this video.

5:30 why did you add an extra o on the top right side?? C is only connected to one O, not two.

It's part of the CIP (Cahn Ingold Prelog) rules which is what you use to determine priorities in E/Z. If there is a double bond you count that as two single bonds to that atom.

Does anyone know when the E-Z configurations are not applicable. I'm studying for my first o chem exam and one of the questions on the review exam is determine which descriptive phase 1-6 is applicable . 4 is E configuration, 5 is Z configuration, and out of all 5 parts, 4-5 was written down on only 3 of them. SO when do you when to look for e-z configurations, if that makes sense?

I guess I'm the only one who's disappointed at the lack of complexity of the molecules. How about an example where you have a molecule that presents more than a double bond? And how would you draw it if they asked for the skeletal structure?
@jonathanleitch61767 жыл бұрын
zuikisnostalgia if you could be more specific I may be able to help. When you say "more than a double bond" what exactly are you referring to?
@jonathanleitch61767 жыл бұрын
It's also important to note that a molecule with all sigma bonds will have conformational stereoisomerism which doesn't require E,Z nomenclature since rotation around the bond is possible.

If the molecule is cis or trans around the double bond, do we still use the E-Z system? or do we just name it cis/trans. If the molecule with a double bond has 2 of the same group attached to the double bond (right side) from both ends of the symmetry line, but 2 opposite ones (left side of molecule). Can we still use E-Z? Do we name it E or Z? please help

Why did the instructor pretend that the carbon was bonded to two oxygens when in actuality it was only bonded to one? Is that how you are supposed to assign priority with other similar molecules?
