I tutor people in math and science and visit educational videos on KZbin fairly regularly. I think one of the 10+ year replies was on an ultrasound video, but I can't quite remember now.

7:48 It's always good to remember that the chain has to go through the double-bond, even if you could make a longer chain elsewhere. Thanks for the explanation and all of the examples!

I've been trying to understand priority groups that were introduced in our homework mind you not in actual class and I was so confused trying to read about it. No, you have to include both the carbons involved in the double bond, in the configuration you suggested only one of the carbons involved in the double bond is considered. @@sanyasarin

the double bond has to be included in the longest chain. It means the WHOLE bond, not just a part of it

@@specialgamer6852 looking back now, I think its because he stated that the double bond should be the lowest no. The double bond's position takes precedence when determining the name. Since you can have the double bond on Carbon 1 with a 7-carbon chain, you must use that option because it gives the double bond the lowest possible number.

8:17 sir this is not the longest chain and you check again by numbering from left until you reach down to the branch and you will find out that the longest chain is actually octene , THANKS for your efforts .

Right. At first I'm like oh easy, double bonds means end everything with ene ... then came the addition of other molecules being attached which made it even more confusing as well as multiple double bonds turning it into diene, triene, etc and having to put it all in alphabetical order 😭
