THIS'S THE KIND OF CONVERSATION I WANT TO TALK A BOUT ALL TIME !

This is nice while doing laundry or cooking😊. Being overwhelmed by tools, yes! I've bought a pencil set once, which contained 6B through 6H graphite pencils, then there's different pieces of charcaloal, charcoal pencils, pastel pencils beside the handy utilities such as pencil sharpners and kneadabke eraser. I couldn't fathom needing them all, or what for, it was so overwhelming (combined with busy life) that I didn't use it at all. A few years later The drawing codex has gotten me back into drawing , but I'm still trying to find out which pencil works best for me. I probably should write down on my sketches which one I used so I can see what yields the nicest results.

It's funny, talking about simplicity- when I first really started getting into gouache I used a primary set with 4 colors and black + white. After getting a 12 color set I found myself making worse work for a bit because of how overwhelming it was! Less is definitely more as a beginner, except for in very specific situations. That is why digital is just so hard at first. You have millions of colors and blending modes from square 1 :)

Learning how to mix real world paint will help digital artists. I love watercolors and use a split primary palette of 6 colors with a warm and cool version of each hue. Sometimes I add convenience colors like yellow ochre, burnt sienna, burnt umber, and Payne’s grey.

Great content. The last part really hit home regarding, the more materials you have really kinda slows progress. My expeirience exactly.

I defenetely bought too much markers as well as I use only watercolor and black ink related items. I was quite disappointed with fountain pens, I was expecting they would last longer than three years, but I might have been harsh on them using India ink and not cleaning them as much as I should. Thanks for the podcast. I was agreeing with all of it while I was listening to it.

I feel way more comfortable when I’m working with limited supplies and a limited color palette. I see some people with like 100 shades of one color and I’m like --how do you pick the right shade?

bought an ipad (for procreate) and thought it would help me make more and or better art. but I ended up selling it and now just work in photoshop and love sticking to one "medium". and inside just sticking to photoshop - for the past couple months have grown quite a bit in the areas of agility and finesse in creating my pieces. great listening to this while im working!

I've purchase lots of fancy markers and colored pencils along the way and as you said - none them helped me improve my art. Now I only work with two sketching pencils, learning to compose the things I want to draw so that someday those other tools will be useful. Love the podcast idea and looking forward to the next one!

Thank you for this podcast! It's very relevant for me since as a beginner artist I'm very tempted to try different techniques and materials. I"ve already tried drawing with pencils, color pencils, watercolor pencils, painting with oils, acrylics, watercolors and guache. For the past few months I"ve been focusing mainly on oil pastels and really like them, however, I've been thinking about trying soft pastels for different effects you can achieve with them. After listening to your podcast, I think I"ll wait with that, though ;) On the other hand, I think that each technique taught me something that I can apply using oil pastels, so it definitely wasn't a waste of time. However, I agree that there's a big learning curve in exploring just one medium fully and it's very satisfying when you can overcome problems which arise because no medium is perfect and each has its limitations.

Hi Tim¡ A pleasure to had found this podcast in the middle of the KZbin jungle. Very educative and pleasant to hear about art, art tools and about our audacity to make art. My self guilty to buy things/tools in order to make things better. Nowadays are my purchases more carefully planned and with a deeper intent. Funny enough my lates tool is a pack of 10 fibre tip pens from Faber Castell. My husband founded in a box stored years ago. Those are the most simple things I’m working with for the moment Looking after ways to use it and incorporated it in my belt. Thank you for a great issue to talk about it. 🙏🏾☺️👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

I really like your advice- videos, so I'm very happy, that you decided to try a podcast format. It was great for listening while drawing, what I do with the drawing videos from your other channel too, after I watched them for the first time. Thank you😊
