Chipping away at art, even with just 30 minutes a day, can offer up some interesting possibilities. The critical factor isn't the abundance of time but how effectively it's used. Whether you're exploring art as a hobby or pursuing personal projects as a professional, the math does check out. The trick is to learn how to actually chip away effectively
KEY TAKEAWAYS:
1) A clear, focused goal is crucial. It directs your efforts, making sure every minute counts.
2) A consistent artistic practice or ritual maximizes the productivity of limited time, transforming brief sessions into significant strides.
3) Productivity encompasses more than active art-making; planning and reflection are equally important.
4) Simplicity in tools and approach accelerates learning and project development. Mastery of a few tools is more valuable than a superficial acquaintance with many.
5) Regular practice, efficient start-stop routines, and a learning-by-doing approach are key. These habits foster continual improvement and adaptability.
PRACTICAL STEPS:
1) Define what success looks like for each session, be it completing a sketch or learning a technique.
2) Prepare your workspace and materials ahead of time to ensure every minute is spent on creation.
3) Focus your designated art time on creation; reserve planning and other tasks for outside this period.
4) Reflect on your work post-session to identify strengths and areas for improvement.
PHILOSOPHICAL INSIGHTS:
1) Constraints can spur creativity. Limited time forces prioritization and focused decision-making.
2) The art-making journey, especially under time constraints, is as much about exploring potential as it is about producing outcomes.
3) Embrace the discipline and joy found in regular, focused creation as integral to your identity as an artist.

So good video, thank you very much for that. I went through many tutorials on how to draw, but without any significant results, until I found your channel and the drawing codex. In my case it is really more about time management and productivy then anything else. Those are great insights that I didn't find in any other art related channels.

All of your videos are always very insightful, but this one hit particularly close to home as someone who is a serious hobbyist but has a full-time job that's not art-related. I'm fortunate to not be super pressed for time outside of the 9-5, but you're right that everything you mentioned is useful whether it's 30 minutes or three hours a day. I've definitely struggled with lack of focus (and a bit of f***-around-itis when it comes to getting started!). Great tips to work on eliminating both of those issues. My day job is software engineering and computer programming, and everything you said rings SO true... I'm almost embarrassed that much of what you talked about are lessons I more-or-less learned long ago (often the hard way) in my day job, but for some reason never applied to art. The first thing you do when you try to optimize an algorithm is prune the decision tree (eliminate the possibility of going down as many irrelevant side-paths as possible), and I've spent years at work emphasizing using reliable, simple, time-tested frameworks over letting projects be sucked into a never-ending treadmill of chasing the flavor-of-the-week shiny new thing. And, of course, avoiding scope creep to actually get a 'minimum viable product' out the door instead of getting bogged down. So that's all to say that this video is fantastic advice that I think applies to way more than just art. But thank you so much for connecting the dots and making me realize how it applies to art. Also just want to mention how much I appreciate the practical and reasonable approach you have to skill building. So many art resources treat learning fundamentals more like a brutal hazing ritual that must be endured before you earn the right to do something fun or interesting, rather than a practical set of skills that need to be developed to different degrees to achieve particular results. Incredibly refreshing and down to earth, really appreciate that you cut through all the tortured artist angst and art mysticism with a practical evaluation of the realistic trade-offs to considered when choosing goals, style, mediums, etc. Your channels are full of some of the most actually practical and useful art advice I've seen on the internet, much less youtube. I've been working my way through the Line & Color Academy and really enjoying it as well. Great stuff.

God bless you for you and for all the work you put on your channels. This has been the best education I have received. Will there be a discord in the future?

Thank you for the effort to make this format! It's such a good thing to listen to your perspective with the years of experience that you have. Actual I try to get in back in a routine, to draw 1 - 1,5 h every other day. At first, it was very challenging to do this in the evening after my 9-5 and housekeeping, social activity and sport. Normally i would watch a bit of Netflix or play some pc games at the end of the day. But slowly I feel a drive or urge getting back to the drawing board and have the next fun session.

Finally caught up! And as a hobbyist this is quite a topical one for me to catch up to Have not been on my art journey nearly long enough to see if incremental amounts of roughly 30 minute blocks of high intensity art time have made an impact for me compared to other methods. But, having done and still doinh something similar for language learning, I can at least confirm its application in that field! With that said, I am literally ADHD diagnosed and have that whole motivation which comed and goes thing, so it's a difficult balance. Ultimately I can never truly get a little bit in every single dsy consecutively for more than a few months, but once that incremental streak breaks I think it's important to be able to forgive oneself and be ready with the mindset to get back into the thick of things, focused more on the process and the now and what could have been. As far as simplification of tools for learning, using the same sketchbook for drawing to do some other tasks, I 100% agree. And it's part of why I tend to just practice on my iPad which I take and make myself use for other stuff, while having a limited brush set for everything. Think that for now anyways, such a setup is the best application of this mindset I have yet to find. And obviously since it's digital that whole "set up your pencils and canvas and workspace" time is a lot briefer, making it easier to get to the juicy stuff more quickly during my limited daily incraments of art work. Cheers!
