this video is about e3 and why it's not as cool as Garfield: The Tale of Two Kitties

Uhm... In retrospect, E3 was a lot more important than we gave it credit for, it was an arena for companies to actually compete with each other, now the Big 3 seem perfectly contempt not* competing against each other, and everything has grown stale as a result.

Well, the reason why E3 existed was due to that the CES, Consumer Electronics Show every year since the 1970s, wasn't giving video games, at the time a revived brand new industry in the late 80s early 90s, was put to the side and not even give a warm welcome to games that were going to be released there. So in 1994 the ESA decided to create their own event, take video game showcases out of CES, and put it into E3. And it was also the same year that Sony made the gigantic PS1 stadium showcase in the first year of 1995. But at the time it was still a showcase of games coming out. But by the time the late 1990s early 2000s came around, it went from a conference to a convention, and thus, many mention that turning E3 from a conference into a convention is what likely caused E3 to be killed off, as well as social media like Twitch and KZbin, pretty much killed any potential to showcase their content at E3 ever again. Not to mention devs can just meet a Game Developer Conferences or GDC for short, that killed off E3 as well for businesses and devs alike. And while Summer Games Fest takes the spot of where E3 once was, I can say that it's a loot shorter and only stays at the place for three days there and that's it instead of 5 straight days of E3. So yeah, while I do miss E3 back in the 2000s, unfortunately culture and gaming landscapes have gotten worse over time, and even games nowadays, compared to 20/30 years back, aren't in the same place, luxury, or originality, style, and creativity as it was back before Social Media was a thing in the late 2000s early 2010s thanks to Facebook, KZbin, and Twitter.

man good ol' days. Gather THE bros, get HYPE, get snacks, wings, pizza and watch live streams ALL day on big ass projector. Gaming and everything surrounding it is just not the same anymore. objectively worse that it's ever been in decades.

Yeah, it was a time when the gaming community was on the same page. Like a cultural event. A gaming holiday. The companies that bailed didn’t seem to appreciate the meaning that time of year had for people.

I have seen many people around me say that the new presentations (Summer Game Fest, The Game Awards) are the "new E3." Simplifying it that way fails to recognize that E3 was not purely presentations. It was an entire event and gathering for demos, merchandise, and a lot more promotional hype than just a stage show.

Those were the times they made games focused on the audience, not focused on the money. When you focus on the audience their love will make the money come to you. @ajajpk Rose colored glasses, the very first big E3 moment was the Twilight Princess reveal a game made for the fans...but not the game the devs made. 20 years later Wind Waker won the war. Nobody gives a damn about Twilight Princess anymore. The art style of Wind Waker aged better than Twilight Princess and that game aged even worse because it fell into the "gritty and edgy " trend of the mid 2000s.

e3 wasn't open to the public until 2017. before then the event was always aimed at professionals working in the gaming industry, shareholders and press, so it was actually competitive. that's why summer games fest feels so different now, its aimed at the public so they're selling to us directly (with more ads than ever)
@RadiaUmbra3 ай бұрын
E3 kept companies accountable, since EVERYONE was going to there, they couldn't show filler, without getting trashed for it. All the events that "replaced" E3 are not comparable. Most of the time when there's a SGF, a TGA or a Gamescom, the announcements are super dry and they could've been bunched up in one event. I'd say even if Nintendo were the first to do the digital conference thing, funnily enough some of their best Directs were when E3 was still relevant.

Bro wtf was that opening clip? Did a presenter really tell the crowd to be quiet?! 😮
@oGioGo3 ай бұрын
For some the context, it was for XBox’s 2014 E3 presentation. There was some technical issues where they would play a video but there was no audio. But the second time it happened was during Battlefield 4’s presentation. The guy making the presentation was just supposed to introduced the game but then the video screwed up and there was no audio again. So for the next two minutes, he was just standing there awkwardly waiting for the video to come back up. Some people on the crowd started to audibly make fun of the whole thing which is why he told them to be quiet. It was honestly really uncomfortable but also funny in hindsight.

The internet did NOT kill E3. Games companies started making decisions for shareholders. When they announce their decisions to gamers at E3 the gamers get upset, that is bad PR. All games journalism and marketing is for shareholders not gamers.
@Magikarp-4ever3 ай бұрын
@TylerSmith-oz7ry that's a good point, covid killed it off for good, at least it gave them an excuse for it, it had been losing views since the internet became mainstream and the nail in the coffin was each game company starting their own news feed so they could be fed the exact info the shareholders wanted, exactly when they wanted it to, which is what I've heard others say which makes some sense since it was covid that sealed it's fate but it's views had been dying for a decade straight I think, also motion control could seriously be said to be the first nail because istg every damn thing afterwards I saw was either motion control reveals or horrible gimmicks for it

I liked E3 because it had so many publishers consolidate all their future releases into one easy to watch conference. And E3 was independent from publishers, so all the big publishers had to try their best to stand out. But nowadays all publishers just make their own conference, it seems too curated now. I liked how silly some parts of E3 were! It really is an end to an era.

I feel like the biggest problem with these new shows that are trying to replace E3 like Summer Games Fest is that there's never anything THAT exciting announced at these events. Also, everything just gets leaked now. What made E3 so special was they had reveals at their shows that were worth getting hyped for, not to mention you never knew what was going to get announced as this was before leaking culture. Now a days, any big game announcement is usually just leaked ahead of time, and in these shows like Summer Games Fest and State of Plays, 90% of it's just these random haug pauge of games that I've never heard of and don't really look that exciting. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying these games don't deserve to be announced at these shows, but have a big/exciting announcement in there as well to compliment these smaller scale game announcements, and these shows usually never do.

Thing is if you're like me these days I don't pay much attention to gaming outside of what ever game it is that I am interested in at the time so E3 was really exciting for me as it was the one time of year where I really caught up with whats going on and whats coming up in a simple to understand way. So things like leaks don't really reach my ears. Now all the companies have individual press releases its much more messy to keep up with whats going on and very much less exciting time of year. It's a real shame and it's a shame how hateful the gaming industry got towards E3 by the end, I didnt love everything E3 did but I still looked forward to it.

Underrated Channel honestly also as someone who went to E3 2018 I can perfectly say that it was an overpriced award show and advertisement bait place also you had to pay to get in and pay for a seat and pay for an entrance fee to go into some of these game showings and back in I think 2007 or 2008 whenever the first Naruto Ultimate Storm Trailer released the E3 showing my Tio attended said it smelled like the people didn't shower or he calls them musty now and there was spilled drinks on the floor where he sat and people talking over the trailer so safe to say its better for people at home to just watch these trailers then to deal with those problems

Wat took ya so loooonggg rushnerd gaben g a b e n tic toc I can't see me loving nobody but you for all my life all of this just makes sense .. all is a season all is just an involution from its precedent set previously and then forming into a changed form from its former. You see this in linguistics where terms are used for a time and fall out of use or become changed to the point that they are no longer recognizable or so changed that similarities are sparse yet still coming from some time before long forgotten after from the perception of the observer speaking or writting those words. I no longer care about these things that humans congregate around. They seem to babble about a whole lotta vapor. But I value its stupidity as it serves as a view on being caught on riff raff of passing things while people who could not care about art laugh at how poor you are wasting your time on inferior things and jumping through hoops as they get rich off of your distraction how poetic they must think. You know if we got Half-life 3 and all to the max we could say humans have a soul but you would if you did not get washed up into the echo chamber of causal ping ponging you all seem to adore. Wow the greatest pixels the greatest plastic woooow everybody clap. I play Halo 3 for the player model and 3d fps sandbox and Oblivion for its vibe and try to do the effecient levelling. No I do not need 250gb games on my pc I will go outside and train in the forest if I get bored which I do ok cool

I knew E3 would eventually die the same way G4TV and game magazines all died because of the Internet you don’t need to watch E3 to find out information about upcoming games and you don’t need to watch G4 or read game magazines anymore. They were good for that time, but now they’re obsolete and rockstar and Nintendo definitely contributed to the death of E3 when they chose to skip it and have their own events and soon after every other major game publisher did the same thing E3 was good in the 90s 2000s and 2010s but not so much in the 2020s because of the pandemic and video game publishers kept skipping the event altogether
