E34 525Tds cold start (-26°C)

Hi. I added this comment not to write the same answer multiple times.
1.) Yes, I could turn the radio off, but it doesn’t consume too much power and during starting it is off anyway because of unloader relay, so I don’t think it would helped much. Everything else was off.
2.) Yes, it was too risky to keep cracking for so long, but battery was old (charging whole night) and maybe if I try to start more times, it would not have had enough power to start cranking again.
3.) Why I didn’t start immediately after glow sign goes off? Preheating takes longer then sing is active. So, I was waiting until preheating is finished completely. It is normal behavior of the ECU and preheating unit.
4.) Glow plugs were unknow condition. This had probably a bad influence.
5.) You don’t need to be rude in comments.
Anyway, I was able to start, not ideal start, but many cars weren’t. Starter keeps working. Battery and glow plug were replaced.

If diesel is to be used in these cold climates, you should definitely purchase external block heating systems.Otherwise, it significantly reduces the life of the starter system and battery and may break the abs system after a long time.

In this model and at least the e36, the fuel usage meter does that while the engine is running but the car is stopped. And when you start moving the fuel usage meter comes down from the top as the fuel usage is higher in these first meters

incredible!!! battery was just about to give up !!!! but i think one should do the 2 or 3 glow plug heatings, one right after the other, no delays in between, and at the 3rd try,CRANK it exactly as the light goes out,the ECU will continue energizing the plugs as it cranks; if you wait long,the ECU may have already disconnected them, and then it will be a miracle start,like you just did.

I live in Siberia, Russia. Cold weather is normal for us (-30c), sometimes-40c. My toyota can start engine everytime whatever weather. I use oil engine 5w30 and i have good battery. Ps: We protect the radiator from cold air and insulate the engine.

15 years ago 200k was much. These days 300k isn't much. Most cheap/free cars have done 300-400k, especially Volvos and Mercs, but even the French and Vauxhalls do 300k pretty commonly. Only casual YouNoobers are dumb enough to genuinely believe an engine needs a complete rebuild every 100k kilometres.

Glowplug indicator turns off after few second (4-5s) but preheating is active for 11s in total even indicator not indicate it. This is why I was waiting.

I had two heart attacks while this engine was starting. In my opinion, there is too long a pause after the glow plug control lamp goes out and the starter is turned on. The glow plugs had time to cool down and the glowing combustion did not proceed as it should. Sorry for my English.

Hi. Going glow plug off doesn't means end of preheating. The lamp goes off after 9 sec, but preheating takes longer. I switched ignition off exactly in the moment when preheating was stoped. Check my descrtiption below the video.

Hexa Skelethor It might shut off but there's still an electrical pulse that sends a signal to power the radio right after the engine turns on. It withdraws power from the battery, with such cold temperatures it's best to start the car with as little as possible turned on.

Either your glow plugs are bad, fuel not for winter,very thick engine oil or not good compression. Had one of these tds's , i live in Bitola (google about the winters here), well bellow -28 and i was starting my tds with one time glowing.

But I heard from a russian that they always turn on the rear window heater or the headlights to warm up the battery and to get better cranking amps..

Radio dont drain so much battery. He has turn off almost everthing that uses much power. But glow several times over and over and over and then when starting give gas trottle. Important to have a battery with high start amps.

Peter Horvath -right after the yellow light goes out turn the ignition( it warms up the cilinder head so if you wait more it cools down rapidly) - don.t keep it spinning longer than a few seconds if it doesn.t start, instead turn the key back and try again the whole process otherwise you just fry the starter and kill the battery) Also try changing the spark plugs every 2 years. You are no right about preheating. It takes longer than sign indicates preheating. That's the reason why I was waiting a little bit longer. Battery was not in good condition and maybe If I tried to start more times, It wouldn't have enough power to start spinning the engine (the highest current consumption is when you activate starter). Yes it was risky to keep starter active for so long, but fortunately nothing went wrong. You mean glow plug I guess. Diesel do not use spark plugs ;)

Turning off wouldn't help surely in this case:). It didn't have a huge current consumption. It could have influence in case of 1KW amplifier playing high volume :). Yes, I could have maybe 1A + during preheating, but this is insignificant benefit. And during starting radio is automatically turned off through unloader relay. ;)

Normalement on démarre des que le voyant de prechauffage disparaît ... La de la façon dont tu démarre les bougies ont refroidi et du coup a insisté comme ça tu fait du du post traitement ( avec la chaleur en mouvement des pistons cela arrive a brûler le gazole et démarrer ) En gros tes préchauffe ne servait a rien ...
