This reving sounds harsh but was not harmful. It might be around 2000 rpm, maybe 2500 rpm. When my 2.2 Hyundai Diesel is cold, the automatic shifts between those two to the next gear.

Cycle the glowplugs a couple times before starting. One cycle is not gonna be good enough. I've had VW's and diesels at that my whole life. Revving it whilst cold is very very bad. Let it run on its own and warm up naturally to preserve the engine. You've no idea how much damage with cold oil You just did there.

No need. These have computer controlled glowing, so it will heat the glowplugs to a certain temperature and hold it there until the engine has started. Cycling does not do anything. I have the same Touareg with CASA engine, and it wil start easily if the battery, oil and fuel are fit for the winter.

Start the engine up, let oil pressure build, let it cycle until rpms drop and wait another minute. Start driving but don't do high rpm. It's not the load on the engine that kills it, it's high poorly lubricated rpms. Once the oil is at least 30-40 degrees C, you can start driving normally but don't redline until oil is 70C or over. What he did there might sound horrible but he's probably not even pushing 2k rpm

@@dopiaza2006 Did not know that, thanks. However, I learned from experience that I had to leave the key turned for a certain amount of seconds, or else it was 100% guaranteed to not start. It may have been a battery issue.
@EndstyleGG
@EndstyleGG Жыл бұрын
@@azimuth4850 Like you experienced, they definitely do not turn off after the light goes off, in fact they run for around 1-3min after engine start to ensure faster heating times for emissions and such (of course varies between cars and temperatures). That may have been true in older cars, but even in our 15yo diesel the manual states to start engine right after the light goes off, which actually tends to result in a more difficult start, than if I wait maybe 5ish extra seconds after the light goes off. If you listen carefully you may be able to hear a relay click off after some time of not starting the engine, I notice the indoor lights slightly brighten when that happens, since they are the old halogen type.

You should turn the ignition on and off several times before starting the engine to ensure better preheating. Also motor oil thickens under such temperatures and becomes quite resistant to flow, which makes it more difficult for the engine to be properly lubricated. Motor oil will return to its normal viscosity after some warm-up time has passed.
@Xenon777_
@Xenon777_ 4 ай бұрын
Most modern diesel vehicles have a built-in timer that controls the glow plugs. Once you turn the ignition key on, the glow plugs stay on for a preset amount of time, depending on the car's sensors that monitor engine and ambient temperatures. Cycling the ignition multiple times won't extend the glow plug operation beyond what the system allows, so it’s usually unnecessary to turn the ignition on and off repeatedly. In older cars this will work though.
@Aukes84
@Aukes84 4 ай бұрын
Not true anymore with newer diesel engines. Glow plugs keeps on glowing even if the light is not on anymore. Usually even few minutes after the engine has started, to decrease the noise and to increase the efficiency.

Hello there, could I use a fragment of your video for my coldstarting compilation? Of course I will put a link to your original video in the description, increasing the original’s popularity too. Thanks a lot for you answer in advance :) Great video and great startup considering the lack of enough cold cranking amps. Why did the starter cut out first few times? You turned it off yourself or the car stopped cranking itself because the systems thought the battery doesn't have enough juice?

I damaged a lifter getting on it, cold 30F in my TDI, that's when I went battery electric with the Volt. We have an R1S right now. Last winter we showed up to the motel it was -25F. I didn't want to go back outside so I didn't plug it in. Next morning there was a Mercedes Diesel plugged in to the one I had my eye on. No worries, next quick charger was only 80 miles away. I remember my best friend and I hooking the Toureg to a chicken tree trying to pull it out of the ground, It was only 4-5 inches in diameter, that's about 10-13cm for everyone else. With the turbos spooled, and copious amounts of torque the Toureg pulls its front wheels off the gound more than a foot, more than 3 decemeters off the ground. The tree laughed at us.
