Wow, what a job! Your patience to preserve everything and to treat these old windows with appreciation, my respect. Most people would probably have simply exchanged them for "plastic windows". Greetings from cologne Andy

To me, an original window is irreplacable. When I was looking for houses I was always dissapointed if the windows were new. It was always a no for me. So here I am. With many many many original windows in terrible state. Enough to keep me occupied every summer for a decade 😆

Well it's all learning by doing, I've made many mistakes so far. But I have many rooms left to make right thanks to my early mistakes 😄

How satisfying it must be to remove those screws that have almost disintegrated into the wood after so many decades. Amazing work.
@old_school_moaboa2 ай бұрын
Oh it was! Except for a few that had disintegrated so much half of it didn't come out. It was hard to get everything out and I can't help but wonder if the old rust will "infect" the new screw. Either way. It was even more satisfying to completely restore all of the hardware. To have all of those layers removed and stripped away :-)

Hardware cleaning: I use only boiling water for ca. 10 minutes without any cleaning products and it is working like charm...you did a good and hard job, I know it from experience...
@old_school_moaboa2 ай бұрын
Huh. Maybe I should try one batch without and one with next time and see if I notice any difference. It works best if there is linseedoil paint at least in the first layers but it might just all be acrylic paint and then the linseed oil soap makes no difference

Hi Moaboa. I am excited to come across your window restoration. I too am contemplating restoring my old windows. The paint in my windows has lead in it. That makes me afraid to do the stripping myself. Did you have to deal with lead paint on your windows? Also, that infrared paint remover looks like it works well. Would you recommend it to others that want to strip old woodwork? Thanks and keep up the good work.
@old_school_moaboa2 ай бұрын
No I didn't have led. However the speedheater is perfect for it because the actual stripping is safe also when dealing with led. They have had independent researchers to test the fumes and it's perfectly safe to scrape the paint off without protection. The study is on their website www.speedheater.com. the price for one is hefty but considering the cost of properly restoring windows bh a professional, then it's worth it many times over. If you are only doing windows i would recommend the cobra or the slim variant. Also you have to follow @gantelius_fonsterhantverk on instagram for tips. He is local to me but he is a global influencer when it comes to window restoration. Such skill and expertise.

However when sanding the rest you must use protection as there will be some paint residue left. But it's a quick job.

What is the machine? Does it heat up the old paint for removal?

It's called a Speedheater, it's a Swedish intention and is immensly popular among all professional building restorers and all us amateurs working with our old homes in Sweden. Check it out here speedheater.com/ (I am not sponsored but I will contact them and see if we could partner up as I love my speedheater and would love to promote it as a partner too)

I very much appreciate seeing the processes involved in restoring the original windows in old houses. 🏠 😮. This summer I’ve also been watching window restoration on the KZbin channel @storiesfromthecascina in northern Italy. They have some similar challenges.
