For all my 60 years, my mother has used a dresser exactly like this one and a mirror hung on the wall in another part of the house....this is the first time I've realized they belong together!😂 Great job resurrecting this one.

Chestnut. I have a six-drawer five-tier tall Eastlake bureau in shabby condition. It looks really rough but the unimproved raw wood inside the drawers makes my clothing smell wonderful. Congratulations for bringing this one back from death's door.

I deal with, move, restore, give away, bring to auction and sometimes am forced to throw out countless antiques. Nice job but no one treasures such things now. In time beautiful wood furniture will come back. I feel the life of those that originally made it every time I examine a piece.

The beveled glass of the original mirror was wonderful. You could get it resilvered and put it back in the frame. I think that would really be the jewel on the piece. Excellent work!

My father restored a very similar Eastlake dresser in the 80"s that was my grandmother's. He used linseed oil and I have refreshed it with Odies oil. I have owned it for the last 30 years and it will be passed to my daughter. Thank you for giving this piece of history a new life.

Beautiful, sympathetic restoration. I was dreading gel stain, paint, and cheap hardware. Instead, you brought out the natural beauty of the wood (chestnut?) and found solid brass, that looks great.

The black spots around the nails and screws could have been treated with oxalic acid. But of course, a good job has been done, you have recreated a worthy object from junk. Excellent result.

Just for the heck of it, if you have the pieces from the old top, why not try steaming and weighting them and reassembling, as a practice piece? Also, what did you do to repair the mirror glass? J'en ai sur ma rambarde d'escalier, j'y suis allé au papier de verre fixé sur une baguette de restaurant japonais mais j'ai l'impression d'avoir énormément creusé le bois, c'était tres long et très chiant... si tu as une methode plus efficace ca m'intéresse beaucoup - comment as-tu si bien nettoyé les moulures des poignées? Mon prochain projet en implique aussi et je sais pas comment les nettoyer pour leur redonné un tel lustre - combien de temps as-tu passé sur cette restauration? Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it. See answers below: 1) I used a couple of methods. You can fold the sandpaper into thirds to get into tight spaces, I used a thin piece of wood to rap the sandpaper around so that the sand paper is more ridged, lastly patiences. It takes time. 2) I used a brass bristle brush attached to my drill or drill press (the same way I cleaned the casters). You can also boil them in 1/2 distilled white vinegar and 1/2 water for about 15min. It’s messy and smells though. You can also use Brasso and fine steel wool. 3) Total it took me about 20 hours. 3 weeks spending an hour or two each or every other day.
